My #1 Professional New Year’s Resolution is to cut out these phrases:


“I think…”
“I’m sorry…”
“I feel like this…”
“If that makes sense?”
“I just wanted to check…”
“In my personal opinion…”
“Whenever you get a second…”
“This might be a dumb idea but…”

Throughout my career, I’ve fallen victim to using these phrases in an attempt to come off less aggressive, demanding or harsh while sharing my point of view or expertise. 

Tone is tricky for many women, especially in a male-dominated industry. 

But strategically softening our messages doesn't help anyone. 

It limits authentic conversation, input and efficient progress of our teams. 

Ladies (and gentlemen), let’s hold ourselves accountable to remove these unnecessary phrases in the workplace. 

2023 is all about speaking with confidence!

I'm glad Jamie Dimon said what he said. 

NO - not because I agree! But because he is giving voice to an opinion that certain senior managers hold - and it's time we talk about it and debunk it, once and for all. 

So here's what my "anger translator" (or is it my "equity translator"?) would say about Dimon's remarks:

"WFH doesn't work for bosses" - Bosses and managers should learn how to manage people effectively, whether remote or in person. 

Bad management is one of the leading causes of attrition. 

We are past the "one size fits all" model of working arrangements here in 2023 - and if you don't see that yet, watch your employees' feet. 

A good portion will walk out the door.  

WFH might "help women stay home a little" - Once again, this is 2023, not 1953. 

Caregiving is for everyone. Help all of your employees - not just women - with childcare, benefits and flex work assistance to help them thrive. 

If there's one thing people learned during the pandemic, it's that they want to live sustainable lives that allow room for what's most important, including loved ones. 

This post-pandemic economy requires nuanced, thoughtful leadership.

Society often tells us we need to tie our self-worth to being busy and working harder (not smarter) to feel like enough.

I disagree.

What if instead we rooted our self-worth in our ability to feel deeply for others, invest more attention in issues that matter and motivate others to live their best lives.

Be present in the world around you. Be present with yourself.

Here’s to a more embodied, sensitive, strong version of you this 2023!

I know. Negotiators talk a lot. It’s just part of the job. 

You may think silence can be awkward and uncomfortable - but silence can be used to your advantage!

Here are 5 reasons why silence is GOLD in any negotiation:

👉🏻 It gives you more time to think and pitch solutions to the other party.

👉🏻 It is a sign of respect as you talk less and listen more.

👉🏻 It encourages them to express their thoughts and concerns.

👉🏻 It helps them analyze themselves and their situations.

👉🏻 It is a gift. It helps you learn more about the person and shows your value as well.


The more we listen, the more people will talk. 

The more people talk, the more we can understand their perspectives.

That leads to creating value and working towards a win-win situation for everybody. 🙌🏻

There’s power in your emotions.



The good, the bad, the ugly, and everything in between. 

Before you go into a negotiation, be conscious of your emotions in the present.

Do you feel validated when you’re respected? 

Do you get triggered when you’re not acknowledged?

When you’re aware of all your emotions, you will come into the room with a clear mind and approach the conversation with clarity and confidence.

Remember, the best negotiations, relationships, and even client interactions start with yourself - be clear on who you are and what you want to achieve.
