This is how it got started. I saw trash mounting up and burning while on a service trip to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Shocked, I came home and immediately said, "I want to do something about this." (The country has one 160-hectare open-air dump, without a permeable linear.) Within the first week of college, I enthusiastically emailed an engineering professor, who told me, "Take your time and get used to life on campus." The enthusiasm never ended, however, and I became committed to a career in sustainability entrepreneurship. That’s led me to become the API for clients and organizations who can quickly identify the root cause of any issue and provide directions for building ideas or actively and iteratively build, measure, and test. I’ve been a founder, researcher, consultant, employee, blogger, and volunteer in my brief 10-year career. Through my nonlinear career journey, I’ve developed a lens for finding solutions: (1) Customer — Who is the "customer?" What are they doing that made you notice there’s an unmet need? How do you know that *they* know have an unmet need that requires an immediate solution? (2) Business Value — How are you solving the problem? How do you offer it to them? How do you measure success and in what shape, way, or form? (3) Technical Aspect(s)— How do you build that *thing*? What knowledge and skills are necessary? Do you need to build new skills or learn new knowledge? (4) Entrepreneurship — Are you doing this on your own? What does that mean for you? How do you persevere if things don’t go as planned or you get rejected? (5) Stakeholder Engagement — Are you bringing together all the different pieces: customer, developers, sales, etc.? How do you know that everyone’s needs are met and everything is clicking? (6) Social Responsibility — What does it mean that you’re giving back to the community, local economy, and planet? How do you know that you’re building beyond business value? (7) Assessment/Evaluation — How do you build the research questions? How do you ask the right questions? How will you know that you’re asking the right questions? If you don’t ask the right questions, how will you reassess and start asking the right questions? As a quick learner, I’ve developed domain expertise in project management, software programming (e.g. Python, R, SQL, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/TypeScript), data analysis, and community engagement. Most importantly, I’m an adamant advocate for disability rights as someone with epilepsy. Feel free to reach out if you’d like to chat! I’d love to learn more about you. —Alex
