The Andhra Pradesh Forest Department recently conducted an experiment in Papikonda National Park that confirmed the indigenous knowledge of the Konda Reddi tribe. 

The authorities cut bark from Indian laurel trees (Terminalia tomentosa) and confirmed the tribe's claim that these trees store natural water, particularly during the summer.

The Canadian Naval Diving Academy celebrates graduation by taking their class picture underwater.

They set up a large flag and antique diving helmet for decorations, and then attempted to lineup the sailors in full uniform in two rows. The hope was that they could stay down long enough to actually get a perfect picture. They'd float up to the surface. It was hard for them to sit in the chairs.

Although some of the outtake photos show people holding their colleagues in an attempt to keep them down

They ultimately ended up filling their pockets with eight pounds of weights.

Refraction of light with water. 
This is one of my favorite science experiments with water. 

Refraction occurs when light goes through a water surface since water has a refractive index of 1.33 and air has a refractive index of about 1. 

When waves pass through one medium into another medium of different density, the speed of the waves changes. 

The change in speed causes the waves to change direction. This change in speed and direction is called refraction.

Couples in Bogota are being asked to shower together as water supplies are rationed in the Colombian capital.

Bogota brings in water rationing with El Niño weather phenomenon meaning city could run out in under two months

Major neighbourhoods were cut off from the water grid last week to preserve dangerously low water levels at reservoirs that have been starved of rain by the weather phenomenon known as El Niño.

Supplies at the Chingaza reservoir, which supplies 70% of the capital’s water, are at 16% – the lowest on record.

Bogotá’s public water utility estimates there could be about 54 days’ worth of water left.

Chilean miner Antofagasta Minerals
inaugurated a more than $2 billion desalination plant for its flagship copper mine in Chile, Los Pelambres, aimed at relieving the effects of severe drought that has hit production.

Grupo Antofagasta Minerals is the first to operate with desalinated water in an area of the country that has suffered a 15-year drought, sucking water from reservoirs and sparking concern over the fresh water supply.

The desalination plant began construction in 2019 for the plant and plans to pump 400 liters of water per second for use at Los Pelambres, located about 55 km inland. (9 MGD)

Increased salinity in Gulf waters threat to region. 
With 157 desalination plants in the region, including eight in Kuwait, the past two decades saw an increase in salinity in the Persian Gulf. 

The countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region are in the most desert environments in the world, which makes resources and drinkable water crucial necessities.

Research from the Kuwait University revealed that the traditional desalination process, caused the rise in salinity, noting that it is important to find alternatives to older technologies due to the current process producing more salt and pollutants.

While out for a windy run in New Jersey, I noticed these turbines. Turns out the Atlantic City wastewater treatment plant is powered by five wind turbines.

The power produced, in conjunction with the solar energy project, is used to operate the wastewater treatment plant. 

The Wind Farm consists of five, 380-foot turbines capable of producing a combined 7.5 megawatts of power 

The wind farm has saved Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) more than $7.3 million in energy costs.

Perched on sea-ice off Canada's northern coast, parka-clad scientists watch saltwater pump out over the frozen ocean.  Their goal? To slow global warming. Will it work? 

Welcome to the wackier side of geoengineering - deliberately intervening in the Earth's climate system to try to counteract the damage we have done to it.

The ultimate goal of the Arctic experiment is to thicken enough sea-ice to slow or even reverse the melting already seen. 

They are drilling a hole in the sea-ice that naturally forms in winter, and pumping around 1,000 litres of seawater per minute across the surface.

Exposed to the cold winter air, this seawater quickly freezes, helping to thicken the ice on top. The water also compacts the snow.

Colombia's capital Bogota will start rationing water this week to alleviate droughts wrought by the El Nino weather pattern. Affecting at least 9 million people.

Three reservoirs that make up the Chingaza water system, which supplies Bogota with 70% of its water needs, are at just 16.9% capacity, Galan said, their lowest level in 40 years.

The El Nino phenomenon arrived in Colombia at the end of 2023, causing high temperatures and droughts that led to forest fires throughout the Andean country and pushed reservoirs to their lowest levels in decades.

Bogota joins Mexico's capital Mexico City and its surrounding areas - home to some 21 million - which has faced water shortages for years due to low rainfall.

The XPRIZE Foundation, a California nonprofit that designs and hosts public competitions intended to encourage technology development, has announced launch of a five-year global effort that will provide a total of $119 million in funding for new approaches to address water scarcity through sustainable seawater desalination. 

While desalination technology has existed for more than 100 years, the market has stalled in terms of innovations that reduce its cost. 

Only 1% of the world's clean water is produced by desalination, and "of the thousands of plants in existence, 70% are in wealthy countries. 

Kudos to XPRIZE for funding these initiatives. This should really be sponsored by companies in the water industry.

Mexico City neighborhoods are being forced to ration water as the drought-stricken metropolis contends with a water crisis.

Greater Mexico City, home to roughly 21 million people, gets its water from reservoirs and ground aquifers, which experts have long warned are at risk of overuse.

Estimates show 2.15 times more water is taken out of the aquifers than is recharged or recovered.

"Water availability is set to be reduced further — by up to 40% in Mexico alone long-term — because drought-like conditions will continue to happen," says Fabiola S. Sosa-Rodríguez, professor and researcher at the Metropolitan University in Mexico.
