Azi începe construcția Liniei Electrice Aeriene de 400 kV pe direcția Vulcănești - Chișinău, care unește sistemul energetic al Republicii Moldova cu cel al României. Pentru că guvernările precedente nu voiau să dezlege Moldova de șantaj și dependență energetică, acest proiect a fost amânat timp de decenii. This post is about waiting. It's born out of frustration. This post is also an invitation to dialogue. For the authorities. 

Do you know how a child dies at Marie Curie Hospital? 
The father of a little girl who was being treated for cancer here asked me one morning. You have to tell people that children also die here. And do you know how it feels? When a child dies, we, the parents in the wards, are notified to close the blinds. At Marie Curie, in the oncology department, that department where there is only one toilet for 31 beds, that department due to which we, Dăruiește Viață, started building a hospital, all the wards face a corridor. A long corridor. The wards have windows facing the inside of the corridor. This was the monitoring method in the past for patients. It still is. 

Do you know how a child dies? The father asked me. We are asked to close the blinds. And then silence falls. 

No bureaucracy justifies these moments of silence. Our partners at Prinses Máxima Centrum voor kinderoncologie, who treat childhood leukemias with a survival rate of 94%, did not need approval from the ministry to open the center in 2018. Nor did they postpone the move multiple times, as we do, because we never finish transferring the paperwork, transferring hundreds of files. 

The survival rate for childhood leukemias in Romania is 72%. According to reports. I will leave links in the comments. No bureaucratic action that delays the opening of this hospital will increase this survival rate. 

How many pieces of silence does a child and their parent have to face when they are hospitalized in the ward with a shared toilet?

Sinceritatea tăioasă cu care expune și se expune Ana Blandiana este atuul principal al cărții, însemnările nu au fost scrise ca să fie publicate. Înțelegi cât de mici pot fi unii oameni mari, într-o dictatură - Iosif Sava a fugit, abandonându-și mașina ca să nu fie văzut lânga ea.

Sunt multe detalii intime și situații absurde care pot părea neverosimile tinerilor, dar care descriu perfect epoca de aur: o mașină plină de scriitori s-a oprit la Cernavodă, pe drumul de întoarcere de la mare, pentru că auziseră că la magazinul local se găsesc chiloți de vânzare.

I loved reading a biography on Steven Spielberg. Here are my top 10 highlights from the book:

1.  Whatever is there, he makes it work.

2.  Spielberg once defined his approach to filmmaking by declaring, "I am the audience."

3.  "He said, 'I want to be a director.' And I said, 'Well, if you want to be a director, you've gotta start at the bottom, you gotta be a gofer and work your way up.' He said, 'No, Dad. The first picture I do, I'm going to be a director.' And he was. That blew my mind. That takes guts."

4.  One of his boyhood friends recalls Spielberg saying "he could envision himself going to the Academy Awards and accepting an Oscar and thanking the Academy.” He was twelve.

5.  He was disappointed in the world, so he built one of his own.

6.  Spielberg remained essentially an autodidact. 

Spielberg followed his own eccentric path to a professional directing career. Universal Studios, in effect, was Spielberg's film school. 

Giving him an education that, paradoxically, was both more personal and more conventional than he would have received in an academic environment. 

Spielberg devised what amounted to his own private tutorial program at Universal, immersing himself in the aspects of filmmaking he found most crucial to his development.

7.  At the time he came to Hollywood, generations of nepotism had made the studios terminally inbred and unwelcoming to newcomers. 

The studio system, long under siege from television, falling box-office receipts, and skyrocketing costs, was in a state of impending collapse.

8.  When Steven was very discouraged trying to sell a script and break in, he always had a positive, forward motion, whatever he may have been suffering inside.

9.  In the two decades since Star Wars and Close Encounters were released, science-fiction films have accounted for half of the top twenty box-office hits. But before George Lucas and Spielberg revived the genre there was no real appetite at the studios for science fiction. The conventional wisdom was science-fiction films never make money.

10.  Your children love you. They want to play with you. How long do you think that lasts? We have a few special years with our children, when they're the ones who want us around. So fast, it’s a few years, then it's over. You are not being careful. And you are missing it.

From a historical perspective, AI is our chance of generational redemption. After the damage we caused with our sloppy management of social media and its impact on people and society, we now face our collective mirror with one more big transformation at hand.

Artificial Intelligence comes with the potential to revolutionize all fields of science and engineering. It may transform healthcare and people’s access to information, education… It may fill gaps some brilliant almost-artists have that would otherwise have held them in obscurity. But both in short and long terms, it also comes with ethical, legal, societal discussions that unfortunately need more time, more observation and even maturity than the rough rush it takes to develop it allows.

Something is in motion though, and that’s good. Among academics, ethicist, scientists, philosophers…  Although the legal battle mentioned in this The Wall Street Journal  is likely where a lot of this debate will be settled. In a certain way I am glad this discussion is happening this early into the development of the process. I just hope it will be handled well. Cause that may be our last chance to be seen by our children’s children as heroes who gave them a beautiful new world, or the villains who messed it up forever.

For now, I can only I wish we stop treating this issue as a war between those who are for and against the general ghost of AI, for there’s no way to bring it back into the vault. And start looking more into the best ways to do it right. In ways that will benefit society overall, and the palliative ways we will take care of those negatively affected by the transformation. 

Actually, I can do more than wish. l can keep writing too — what I’m seeing, hearing, reading… and about my own experiments in this field (I insist: it’s really hard to gain perspective in AI if you’re not trying to use it for something). And my promise: I’ll keep sharing both the dreams and nightmares my considerations generate, regardless of how they align with what I believe or do.

Hopefully some of them will help.
