VotER - Health Care Based Voter Reg

51 million potential voting-age adults are not registered to vote in the United States. This group is disproportionately made up of the young, the poor, and people of color. These are also the same groups that disproportionately utilize ERs across the country for non-emergency care because they lack access to traditional forms of healthcare. VotER is a civic engagement organization launched through a collaboration between Massachusetts General Hospital, TurboVote, and ideas42. We build platforms that offer non-emergency patients a chance to register to vote in 90 seconds or less using a combination of iPad kiosks and behaviorally informed posters, stickers, and discharge paperwork while non-emergency patients wait in healthcare settings like doctors’ offices and health center waiting rooms.

Founder of Get Waivered, a program that is converting our nation’s ERs into the front door for opioid addiction treatment. Co-founder of GOTVax, an initiative aimed at leveraging a get out the vote framework to deliver vaccines to vulnerable communities via hyper-targeted vaccine clinics. In 2019, founded Vot-ER, with a team of healthcare providers and behavioral science experts to help patients vote like their health depends on it.

I've been thinking a lot about how our healthcare system is more than just a place where people go when they're sick. It's really a place where we see the best of what we can do for each other. Healthcare is all about trust and making a difference in people's lives, and that's something that really matters to me.

Imagine places like hospitals and clinics not just as buildings, but as spaces where anyone can find help and comfort, no matter their background. I believe that the people working in healthcare – the nurses, doctors, and everyone involved – have a huge role to play not just in treating illnesses, but in making our society better and more caring.

I'm excited about the future of healthcare. There's so much potential for us to do more, to use the trust people have in healthcare professionals to tackle big challenges and make real changes in our communities.

As we move forward, I'm convinced that we can turn our healthcare system into a source of hope and a force for good. It's an opportunity for us to come together and make sure everyone gets the care and support they need. I'm ready to be part of that change, to help make a difference in any way I can.

As a physician and advocate, I've seen the stark realities of healthcare inequality up close. It's a multifaceted challenge, deeply rooted in socioeconomic disparities, systemic barriers, and historical injustices. Yet, it's not insurmountable. We have the tools, the knowledge, and the collective will to forge a more equitable future in healthcare.

The path forward involves a holistic approach:

1️⃣Embrace Preventative Care: Early intervention can prevent conditions from escalating into serious diseases. Community-based health education and accessible preventative services are key.

2️⃣Expand Telehealth: Telehealth can transcend geographic and transportation barriers, making healthcare accessible for all, but we must ensure it's equitably deployed.

3️⃣Diversify the Healthcare Workforce: A workforce that reflects the diversity of the population it serves can improve patient outcomes and trust.

4️⃣Advocate for Policy Change: Systemic change is essential. We need policies that ensure universal healthcare access and tackle the social determinants of health.

Change won't happen overnight, but each step brings us closer to a healthcare system defined by its inclusivity and equity. Let's work together to make healthcare a right, not a privilege.

Reflecting on the profound and often tragic stories woven into the narrative of gun violence in the U.S., it's evident how intertwined public health, policy, and personal action are in addressing such a complex crisis. The contrast between these harrowing accounts of gun violence and my own journey, primarily focused on healthcare and policy reform, highlights the multifaceted nature of societal challenges.

While gun violence represents a distinct public health emergency, characterized by its immediate and devastating impact on communities, my own work, though in a different arena of healthcare, shares the underlying imperative of tackling systemic issues through both immediate interventions and long-term policy reform. The stories of individuals like Dr. 
 Megan Ranney, Dr. Garth N. Walker, MD, MPH, Dr. Cedric Dark, Dr. Brian H. Williams, MD, Dr. Kyle Fischer, Dr. Joseph Sakran and many many others stepping into the fray, whether it's advocating for more nuanced research into gun violence, pushing for legislative change, or directly intervening in life-threatening situations, resonate with the ethos of my own career journey: the belief in the power of dedicated individuals to effect change, whether upstream or downstream.

The narrative underscores the critical role of healthcare professionals not just in the clinical settings but as advocates and leaders in public health crises. My journey has similarly evolved from direct patient care to addressing broader systemic issues—like opioid addiction and voter registration in healthcare settings—highlighting the interconnection between health, policy, and societal well-being.

Moreover, the stark statistics and personal stories of gun violence bring to light the urgent need for a multifaceted approach to public health crises, combining research, policy advocacy, community engagement, and healthcare innovation. This approach mirrors my efforts to bridge medicine and policy to tackle systemic challenges, demonstrating the importance of cross-disciplinary strategies in addressing complex health and social issues.

As we contemplate the future of healthcare and public health, the parallels between combating gun violence and other systemic health challenges underscore the necessity of innovative, cross-sectoral solutions that prioritize equity, engage communities, and leverage the unique position of healthcare professionals as advocates for change. The stories of perseverance, despite the daunting challenges, inspire continued commitment to seeking impactful solutions for the myriad issues plaguing our society, reaffirming the belief in the potential for positive change through dedicated effort and collaboration.

“Healthcare-based voter registration is an idea whose time has come.”

Grateful to have had the opportunity to speak at Florida International University - Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine about the impact of the work we are doing at Vot-ER with over 85% voter turnout on Election Day among folks helped to vote using our tools in healthcare settings.

We are just scratching the surface and if the work in the civic health movement we are leading at A Healthier Democracy is successful, we will end up with a fair, more just, and stronger healthcare system.

In Marianna, Arkansas, Elizabeth Cloinger holds an empty medicine bottle. It's a sign of how the system failed her. She lost her health coverage because of Arkansas's rule that people must work to have Medicaid. Over 18,000 others lost their coverage too, not because they didn't want to work, but because the rules were too complicated.

This situation shows a big problem. It's not just about the rules; it's about what we think is important. People who have Medicaid and can work, usually do. They have tough jobs without good benefits. Yet, they're often ignored.

The story of Elizabeth tells us we need to think more about people and less about rules. Healthcare should be for everyone, no matter what.
