My journey to leading experience development for people-loving nonprofits began when I finally came to the end of myself, somewhere around 2010. I'd spent over a decade steeped in very high-speed, leading-edge, data-driven Fortune 500 marketing and large nonprofit fundraising, and ... it just stopped working. At the nonprofit where I served, we'd been highly successful in analytically driven fundraising for a long time. Until we plateaued. I was using all the data-driven, optimization tricks out there, but the growth just stopped. I'd reached the end of what direct-response promotion could do, because promotion wasn't the problem. Remember the 4Ps of marketing? The problem wasn't Promotion. The problem was Product. For nonprofits, that "product" is the experience we offer to the audience. I knew all about Promotion. But I didn't know Product. Most faith-based organizations and leaders don't know Product and Experience -and don't have experience production partners - and that's why they've been (at least in non-pandemic years) stuck in extended periods of very slow growth. So I got to work learning, discovering and experimenting. In 2016, Masterworks set me free to build "the IDEO of the faith-based sector," which ultimately became SUBLIMITY. In late 2024, we joined forces with Historic to do the most supercharged work of our lives. Creating imagination-firing audience experiences matter because people matter. Each person in your audience is a human being and thus infinitely precious. It's our great joy to know your audience members individually, as whole people. Not merely as data. Not merely as personas.
