Tiny pronunciation slips = instant credibility leak in meetings. Fix these in 30 seconds.

Right → Wrong (with a model sentence)
 • ALWAYS → ALL-wayz (wiz) (not “AW-wayz”) — “You’re always welcome to join us.”
 • ALRIGHT → ALL-right (not “AW-right”) — “Is everything alright over there?”
 • NUCLEAR → NOO-klee-er (not “NOO-kyuh-ler”) — “They’re discussing nuclear power alternatives.”
 • PRIMER (book) → PRIM-er (not “PRY-mer,” for book use) — “This doc is a primer for new hires.”

Commonly Mispronounced Business Words

If your accent coach is still teaching “short EE” vs “long EE,” you’re not learning American pronunciation — you’re not learning how to hear the language the way natives do

I say that as someone who used to teach it that way too — before I actually learned how the sound system of American English works.

-Here’s the real problem with “short vs long” vowels:
-You can make any vowel long or short.
-Length mostly changes with stress (stressed = longer, unstressed = shorter).

So just saying “make it longer” doesn’t fix clarity — it just fixes timing.

Take the so-called “EE” sound:
clarity → final “y” = very short because it’s unstressed

university → same thing, short, unstressed at the end

see → same vowel, but now it’s stressed, so it’s much longer

If you like IPA:

-clarity → /ˈklærəti/
-university → /ˌjuːnəˈvɝsəti/
-see → /siː/

👉 Same target vowel (/i/), different length because of stress, not because it’s a “different EE.”

Now look at the IH vowel:

dismiss → /dɪsˈmɪs/

di- = /dɪs/ (unstressed, short)
-MISS = /mɪs/ (stressed, longer)

Same vowel /ɪ/, two different lengths — just because of stress.

So when a coach tells you “This one is the short vowel and this one is the long vowel,” they’re teaching a story that looks simple on paper but falls apart in real speech.

What actually matters for American clarity:

-Tongue position
-Placement / resonance
-Stress & rhythm in the word and sentence

That’s what native listeners’ ears are tuned to — not “short vs long EE.”

 you were given the wrong model from the start.
