Today, Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath launched 'WTFund' to empower young entrepreneurs under 25 with a grant of ₹20 lakhs. It will select 40 such entrepreneurs for funding and mentorship over one year.

The fund is meant to amp up disruptive young entrepreneurs with creative ideas and compelling visions.

"Today, young founders tend to create the most impact within entrepreneurship. At WTFund, our goal is to cultivate a culture that encourages young entrepreneurs to embrace risk by providing a comprehensive support system," Kamath's statement released.

It also enables founders to retain full equity in their ventures.

Additionally, the fund also provides access to operator-first mentorship pods.

They will undergo a rigorous screening process and receive support until they secure their first institutional funding.

The WTFund is open to investing in all sectors and looks to financially support emerging founders, creators, makers, and dreamers.

There would be hardly a home in India that isn't familiar with the "Pahle Istemal Kare Phir Vishwas Kare" tagline.

The tagline signifies quality and reliability in households across North India. 

Founded by Muralidhar and Bimal Gianchandani in UP’s  Kanpur, this remarkable brand started as a small family business of making soaps out of glycerine.

From Humble Beginnings:

In 1987, the Shree Mahadev Soap Industry was born in the heart of Kanpur. Muralidhar and Bimal started small, producing detergent in a modest room. 

Initially, they delivered their products by foot or bicycle, gradually gaining traction within Kanpur's households. 

Strategic Expansion:

Realising the immense potential of their product, Muralidhar strategically focused on expanding Ghadi's reach beyond Kanpur. 

Unlike competitors, Ghadi differentiated itself by introducing white-coloured washing powder, captivating consumers with its freshness and affordability.

Defying Industry Giants:

At one point, Nirma was a detergent brand in India that had a 30% market share and was unbeatable. 

However, Muralidhar decided to take on the challenge of beating Nirma. He founded Shri Mahadeo Soaps Pvt Ltd and launched Ghadi detergent in 1988. 

Muralidhar advertised Ghadi, which was 10% higher in price than Nirma, as having superior quality with more foam. 

After HUL launched Wheel detergent, Muralidhar focused on winning the home market first by expanding Ghadi's sales from UP to Bihar, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh.

By 2002, Ghadi had achieved sales of ₹500 Cr and a 6.75% market share. 

Muralidhar faced a significant challenge when HUL's Wheelbar defeated Nirma, but he pushed the pedal and sponsored popular TV shows like Mahabharat and ran the Ghadi-sponsored Express train between Lucknow and Guwahati for two months every day in 2008.

In 2012, Ghadi crossed sales of ₹2200 Cr, with a 17% market share, beating the giant HUL's Wheel bar. 

Ghadi detergent had taken the top spot in the 12,000 CR detergent market, marking Muralidhar's success in beating the unbeatable Nirma.

Innovative Marketing Triumphs:

With limited resources, Ghadi sponsored popular TV shows and launched the Ghadi-sponsored Express train. As a result, Ghadi surpassed HUL's Wheel by 2012 ascending its sales soaring to ₹2200 Cr. 

Continued Ascendancy:

Presently, Ghadi Detergent commands a substantial ₹6000 Cr brand valuation. Muralidhar Gyanchandani is the wealthiest individual in Uttar Pradesh with a net worth exceeding ₹12,000 Cr.

Strategic Maneuvers:

Ghadi strategically developed a loyal customer base in Uttar Pradesh before expanding nationwide, establishing a strong foundation for growth and becoming a leader in the detergent industry.

Quality and Affordability:

Central to Ghadi's success story is its unwavering commitment to delivering quality products at affordable prices. Despite market pressures and rising costs, Ghadi remained steadfast in its mission to provide value for money to consumers

In 2009, Azhar Iqubal, a small-town boy from Kishanganj, Bihar, enrolled at IIT Delhi but dropped out three years later to create something of his own.

In Kishanganj, he studied in a Hindi-medium school until 10th grade. He later moved to Delhi to enrol at Narayana IIT preparation coaching centre.

In a recent podcast with Raj Shamani, Iqbal stated that he has always been confident about his life despite his modest family background.

During his IIT days, Iqbal considered two business ideas seriously, but neither worked for various reasons. Based in Noida, the entrepreneur believes that all of his ideas had a "comfort" factor during his time at IIT. 

Driven by the same factor with newspapers, he began sharing 60-word news on his FB page and gained fame on his campus.

In 2013, he, along with two IIT Delhi classmates, dropped out to launch "News in Shorts," delivering news in 60-word snippets. The Facebook page gained massive traction, prompting a meeting with Flipkart founder Sachin Bansal, who invested Rs 10 Lakh, leading to the rebranding of the page into the mobile app "Inshorts" in 2015.

Inshorts is a news app that provides summaries (60-word snippets) from various sources. Users can choose their interest categories and read the complete article if needed. It aims to deliver fast and straightforward news updates.

Inshorts started with short news articles and later added videos, infographics, and blogs. The app's founder, Azhar, shifted the focus to Hindi news to increase popularity.

Within a few months, Inshorts had over 1 million downloads.

Inshorts monetized through custom in-app ads, generating revenue of ₹25Cr by 2017. Despite its success, the app struggled to penetrate Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets. 

In 2018, Inshorts revolutionized news with AI integration. Its single-screen cards are editorially curated with AI-driven personalization. Rapid60 algorithm summarizes articles into 60-word briefs. 

AI powers 80% of its content, while 20% of the most-read articles are editorially curated. This innovative approach has made Inshorts the preferred news source for millions.

In 2019, Azhar launched the location-based social news app "Public," which quickly garnered 10 million users within six months. 

By April 2021, Inshorts had amassed 10 million users, while Public crossed 60 million downloads, generating over ₹100 Cr in revenue. 

In 2022, InShorts secured $100 million in funding but struggled to increase revenue and reduce losses. This highlights the need for strategic adjustments to improve future revenue generation. Bolstered by this success, Inshorts became a ₹4000 CR company. 

Today, Inshorts reigns as the No. 1 English news app, while Public boasts over 100 million downloads as the leading local app, showcasing Azhar Iqubal's journey from dropout to visionary entrepreneur, revolutionizing the digital news landscape along the way.

Improper storage, bad infrastructure, and distribution leading to stale foods in outlets is a major issue for the logistics industry in India.

India loses over ₹4980 crores yearly due to logistical spoilage. 

However, this Mumbai-based intra-city cold logistics service promises a solution for brands to deliver fresher food items to their customers.

JustDeliveries, founded by Mansi Mahansaria, helps brands put fresher stock of food items on store shelves of restaurants, cafes, ice-cream parlours, and retail storage facilities.

Recently, the B2B logistics startup operating in almost all major metro cities raised ₹8.24 Cr in funding led by Nabventures, a GOI’s venture growth equity fund.

The origin story:

Founded in 2018, JustDeliveries operated as a bootstrapped company until its registration in 2022. 

Founder Mansi Mahansaria recently told Startup Pedia about the origin of the startup: 

“One day I was dropping my son to school, and I saw unhygienic vehicles delivering crates full of food outside one of my favourite restaurants. I found out that the backend, invisible part of logistics is very unogranized; restaurants owners have to depend on their own vehicles like unorganized tampos to get their foods to outlets", said Mansi while talking to Startup Pedia.

This realisation sparked a strong desire inside Mansi to change the status quo of the logistical operation in India.

“That’s when I started offering hygienic vans with trained delivery boys to restaurants, and cafes in Mumbai, and gradually expanded to other cities.”

Reinventing logistics:

Numerous small and medium-sized food and beverage companies require assistance with daily logistics for food items daily. The increased competition in the food service industry has propelled brands to new standards of serving hygienic and fresh foods.

These business owners still re-stock their outlets by hiring informal workers driving pitiful vans and tempos.

Just Deliveries solves the issue of procurement of fresher items by making B2B drops, allowing business owners to focus on their core business. 

Infrastructure:

The Mumbai startup handles last-mile deliveries for delicate, perishable, and bulky food items to retail stores, E-commerce, Q-commerce brands, and dark stores. They use a fleet of high-quality vans and trucks for operations.

Talking to Startup Pedia, Mansi said, “In the last two years, over 70 F&B companies have outsourced their logistics to JustDeliveries, thus benefiting from last-mile efficiencies and reliability of operations.”
