I was born in New York City, grew up and worked in Switzerland, studied in London and I am from Tanzania, the most beautiful country in Africa and the world. 

For over a decade, I have been travelling, working and fully immersed in the business culture in East Africa and I have to say that although the countries are different, the one thing they all have in common is that the people are kind, authentic and have big hearts. 

I have heard and read alot that people in Africa are not so good at business and I have to say I have seen bad business practices and bad businessmen/women here. This is probably why so many people say investing in Africa is risky. 

However, I know that this is not the only side of the story because I have also seen and worked with great investors and business owners on the continent who are hard working and with the right tools for success, they make returns for themselves and investors more than anywhere in the world. I have had first row experience to this in the last 10 years as a lawyer, entrepreneur and as an investor. 

I decided to be an investment adviser because so many people were telling me how they want to invest in Africa, but because of the complex laws and regulations and not knowing who the right people to do business with, people were either losing capital or just not deploying it at all. As an investor myself and an African, I could not just sit back and do nothing. 

So I started a company called Shikana Group. Shikana is a Kiswahili name which means "to be in co-operation with", "to be together in all aspects" and "to be at grips with somebody". I don't know how to write this post.

For years, I've championed Tanzania. I've spoken about East Africa's potential, encouraged investment in our markets, painted pictures of a continent rising.

Today feels different.

October 29th was election day in Tanzania. Seven days later, the silence is deafening. Not just from the internet blackouts that separated families for days. But from the voices we're no longer hearing.

I keep thinking about the mothers I know who couldn't reach their children. The business owners who watched their streets fill with fear instead of hope. The young people who believed their votes mattered.

98% victory margins tell one story. Empty chairs at dinner tables tell another.

I've been asked how this affects "investment sentiment." How this changes "the narrative." As if tragedy is just another market variable to calculate.

But I can't think in those terms right now. I can't analyze this.

I can only feel the weight of it. The families searching. The communities fractured. The dreams that were supposed to flourish after democracy spoke, now buried under the silence of those who will never speak again.

You want to know the hardest part? I still believe in Tanzania. I still believe in Africa.

That belief doesn't make this hurt less. It makes it hurt more.

Because when you love something - really love it - you don't just celebrate its victories. You carry its pain. You acknowledge its failures. You hold space for both the promise and the betrayal of that promise.

To everyone who lost someone these past seven days: I see you.

To everyone afraid to speak up: I understand.

To everyone questioning what comes next: you're not alone.

The Tanzania I love is big enough to hold this grief. Big enough for this truth. Big enough for the complexity of loving something that has broken your heart.

That's not weakness. That's love.

While everyone talks about Africa's "emerging markets," here's what the data actually shows: Africa isn't emerging—it's already arrived, and most investors are missing the boat.

Yes, the person speaking on this video is none other than singer Kelis, who has left the USA to move to the fastest growing region in the world, East Africa to invest. 

Did you know that when it comes to investment flows across East Africa, Private equity firms deployed over $2.8 billion in African deals in the first half of 2024 alone, yet media coverage remains fixated on challenges rather than opportunities. Fascinating!

The disconnect is staggering.

Kenya's M-Pesa processes more transactions annually than most European payment systems. Nigeria's tech sector raised $1.2 billion in 2023—more than many "mature" markets. Rwanda now outranks Germany in several World Bank business rankings.

Yet investors still ask me, "When will Africa be ready?"

Wrong question. The right question is: "Why aren't we there yet?"

In my practice, I've watched clients who entered African markets three years ago expand into multiple countries, while those who waited are now paying premium prices for the same opportunities. One of my clients delayed their entry into Tanzania's renewable energy sector in 2023, citing "market uncertainty." When they finally made their move in 2025, the acquisition costs had doubled, and their competitors had already secured key partnerships.

Reform isn't the enemy of investment—it's creating the foundation for sustainable growth. Tanzania's new Mining Act didn't scare away investors—it attracted serious players willing to operate transparently. Kenya's digital lending regulations didn't kill fintech—they legitimized it.

Somalia’s New Era: The Türkiye Hydrocarbon Deal and What It Really Means - Part I

DEALS THAT WON GOT THREE THINGS RIGHT 

Over ten years facilitating capital into East Africa, those of us operating in the region have seen the difference between projects that move and projects that stall.

It's rarely what people expect. It is not the presentation deck. Nor is it the grade of the deposit or the crop yield projections.

Three things separated deals that reached production from those stuck in feasibility hell:

1️⃣Power agreements signed and operational before construction started.
2️⃣Offtake locked with actual buyers, not letters of interest gathering dust in a drawer.
3️⃣A government track record of honoring contracts past the administration that signed them.

Sounds basic right?

Yet the $50M+ lithium deal I worked on years back froze because new mining regulations dropped mid-process with no transition guidance. Six weeks of silence from the ministry. Investors redirected elsewhere, where they knew the rules wouldn't shift.

Meanwhile, teams that secured these three elements first... moved. They didn't waste months chasing perfect geology only to discover power's unavailable or there's no buyer commitment.

💰Bankability comes from operational certainty, not potential.

The capital I'm seeing move fastest now runs this filter early. That is before site visits, before detailed due diligence. They're checking: can we operate reliably, is there confirmed demand, will contracts hold through political transitions.

✅If all three check out, then they dig into the details.

Coffee Chat with Amne Suedi:  East Africa's Investment Momentum

We're tired of watching the same media playbook unfold when it comes to Africa in 2025.

Another African country faces unrest. Cue the fear-based coverage. Amplify the negative. Trade in danger when it comes to Africa as a place, investment destination, its people. This is simply not accurate.

Let me be clear about Tanzania right now. The violence and loss of life is really bad. No one is disputing this. But here's what's missing - the nuance Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie warned us about. The danger of a single story.

Yes, there was violence. There was also significant looting of businesses, trespassing with intent to destroy property and harm people. It wasn't only peaceful demonstrators. Many of the activists amplifying this narrative are residing outside Tanzania, with very deep pockets and well-funded by sources that colleagues in Washington are actively fighting with. It is not so black and white as the Media is selling the "Tanzania Story".

Here's what gets erased: stories of building, community, investment, growth. As if human rights violations cancel out all other realities.

When there's a police crackdown on peaceful demonstrators in the USA, it's still reasonable to visit, invest, live there. When the same thing happens in Africa? Suddenly we're a failed state, growth trajectory halted.

Why the double standard?

The data shows something different. Tanzania's GDP growth accelerated from 5.1% to 5.5% by Q3. FDI approvals sustained above $2 billion quarterly. $13.6 billion in infrastructure projects ongoing. Energy expanded by 480 MW. Tourism up 21% YoY. Digital services exports jumped 18%. Even the Investor Confidence Index, which dipped to 6.8 in Q3 due to election tensions, remains resilient at nearly 7 out of 10.

Political risk was flagged. We're not ignoring it.

But why is the dominant narrative that Tanzania is doomed when Q1, Q2, and Q3 data show the country and East Africa on a trajectory toward 5.6-6.0% GDP growth through Q2 2026?

The single story isn't just unfair. It's factually incomplete.

Acknowledging challenges doesn't mean erasing opportunities, the stories of growth, resilience, community building and entrepreneurship. Question the narratives you're consuming about Africa and what you are being sold about Tanzania. The data tells a different story than the fear does.
