Reactive marketing at its worst is lazy marketing. And Taylor Swift just exposed it.

All week I've been watching brands scramble to post orange content the second Taylor changed her Instagram aesthetic. Before any actual announcement. Just a colour change and suddenly every brand is posting orange graphics.

Sesame Street, FedEx, Dunkin', airlines - everyone jumping on the same bandwagon within hours. and I can't help but think, when did we decide that being first to react was more important than being strategically relevant?

This isn't cultural marketing. It's cultural desperation.
Real cultural marketing means understanding why something matters, not just that it's trending. It's about finding genuine connections between your brand and the moment, not slapping your logo on whatever colour Taylor Swift is using this week.

I've been watching brands that actually get cultural marketing right. They don't react to every trend - they pick the moments that genuinely align with their brand story and add something meaningful to the conversation.

The rest is just noise. Expensive, time-consuming noise that makes your brand look like it's trying too hard.

Sometimes the most strategic thing you can do is not post at all.

ChatGPT referral traffic is down -52% since July 21st, I pulled from our dataset of 1+ billion ChatGPT citations and 1+ million referral visits from ChatGPT to figure out what's going on:

ChatGPT is shifting towards sites that provide 'answers', and the long tail of citations is shrinking as a result.

The referral decline started right as citation patterns shifted dramatically. Reddit citations increased +87% starting July 23rd, reaching more than 10% of all ChatGPT citations. Wikipedia simultaneously hit historic highs, up +62% since its July low to nearly 13% citation share yesterday.

The top 3 domains (Wikipedia, Reddit, TechRadar) combined have grown +53%, now controlling 22% of all citations. That's 1 in 5 ChatGPT citations going to just three sites.

At the same time, branded websites are seeing fewer citation opportunities: millions of potential referrals are being absorbed by these dominant platforms. This isn't a GPT-5 change because the consolidation started weeks before the model shipped.

Here's what I think (and let me know your thoughts below): Reddit and Wikipedia aren't winning because they're special. They're winning by default because they're the only ones providing direct answers. When someone asks "what's the best CRM for startups?" and a brand page says "Schedule a demo," while Reddit has a thread comparing 10 options, Reddit gets cited. 

Brands are being pushed by OAI to become the answer on their own site: Create comparison guides, answer real questions, publish what your customers actually search for, in the language they use. The citation opportunity is massive for brands willing to shift from conversion first to answer first content.

This test is just OpenAI experimenting with their citation weighting. The +87% Reddit surge and +62% Wikipedia spike in just a month isn’t organic, but this is what happens when you turn the dials on a RAG system to let high-utility answers get prioritized over branded content.

The concerning part for SEOs in the short-term: when OpenAI adjusts these weights, referral traffic swings violently. A manual adjustment created a -52% traffic collapse in under a month. We're all downstream from OpenAI's experiments.

Whether this particular test becomes permanent or not, the direction is clear: the sites and brands who surface answers are gaining ground.

And why it should be part of your content strategy.

Josh Blyskal shared some data from Profound (screenshot credit) post- GPT 5 which is quite telling: Reddit citations jumped 87%, while referral traffic from ChatGPT dropped 52% overall.

How your content and distribution strategy should evolve:

- I was previously bearish on 3rd party content sources (like Medium) compared to company blogs. Now, I flipped. Use the high domain authority to get your brand in front of your ICP. Doesn't matter if it's from your domain or not.

- Simultaneously, make sure your domain ranking is high. This will help in getting your content used in LLMs. I've been using Ahrefs to track this.

- Your content strategy should be driven by where readers get information and where your content gaps are, not just what your team is excited about. That's how topic gaps + sources cited form your content strategy from AEO tools.

- Treat forums and rankings sites as content, too. Reddit is a lot of work, but is a compounding effect. You'll be discoverable on Reddit & rank in search. So is G2. Neil Patel recently published a piece on how to suceed on Reddit. It's work, but needs to get done.

- Last but not least, metrics. Traffic from LLMs will show up as organic traffic, not direct referrals. Optimize your attribution accordingly and put more weight on brand visibility.

There will be more changes, past GPT 5, that focus on brand visibility, not citations, as models get better. This is just the start.

Been telling brands: Reddit and Quora are where customers take decisions. 

If brands won't be there to carve the narative, remove customer objections and fears...they will be behind. 

People will talk and they have a voice on Reddit. 
Show Up. Fit In. You can do it!!

What this looks like in practice:
Took a dormant brand Reddit account (just 2K views, 39 karma, no community presence) → grew to 500K+ views and 800 karma in under 90 days.
Expanded into 44 active communities and secured moderator status in an industry subreddit.

Most brands faceplant on Reddit in week one.

Reddit isn’t another social channel you can hack. It’s a gated community, and you need to earn your invite.

This is how you don’t screw it up:

Step 1: Claim your brand Subreddit. Do it before someone else does. If you’re late, you lose control of your own story. Period.

Step 2: Register your brand username. Same logic as .com domains in the 90s. If you don’t, someone will grab it, and maybe impersonate you.

Step 3: Create a personal, human profile. No logos, no corporate nonsense. Just a real person, with a name and a face. People don’t trust brands on Reddit, they trust people. Make your human visible.

Now, stop.

Don’t post. Don’t sell. Don’t even hint at marketing.

🔷 Sports Equipment & Apparel → Strong vibe in r/malefashionadvice, r/streetwear, r/BlueCollarWomen.

🔷 Pet Products → Huge love in r/pitbulls, r/dogs, r/cats.

🔷 Health & Fitness → Engaged communities like r/fitness, r/personaltraining, r/biohacking.

🔷 Home & Lifestyle → Big DIY energy in r/BuyItForLife, r/homeimprovement, r/DIY.

🔷 Tech & Devices → Always active in r/photography, r/analog, r/polaroid.

On the flip side, categories like Finance & Energy get a lot more skepticism. Not shocking if you’ve seen the tone in r/personalfinance or r/wallstreetbets.
