How to have impact at events with no budget.

We just had 40 meetings lined up before landing at one. 

At Microsoft I used to do events the corporate way: 
1. Get the best booth possible. 
2. Wait for people to come to us. 
3. Collect business cards and pray. 

I'm pretty sure this is what 80% of people do. 

Now as young startup with less budget we need to get creative.

So here's our PLAYBOOK to attend events 'indie mode'.

1. PRE-EVENT (this is 80% of the work)
- The event app is your goldmine - filter your ICP and start contacting 1-2 month before. Closer to event more people will have the app. 

- Keep messages short and direct: "Hey human - I'm doing X at company Y, and would love to chat because we are already working with Competitor Z so this could be great for you too. Coffee at the venue?" 

- Book directly directly the slots in the app, or send a calendar invite. Never leave it to figure out later. 

- We also set event signals on Amplemarket for outreach via LinkedIn to whoever is posting about it and fits our icp.

- Create a spreadsheet with details of who you are meeting, times, roles, company, etc to stay organised.

2. ON-SITE: 
- Study the venue map - tell everyone to meet in the same specific spot all day (i.e. hall 5/networking area in front of Spotify)

- Find an empty table in the morning and claim it as your stand all day. put some stickers or merch on it.

- Keep meetings 20 minutes max. 

- Wear something distinctive so people can spot you. Antonio and I rocked sunglasses (dual use to hide hangovers as well). 

- Stay active and check other booths during free slots. Meet partners or people you didn't get a chance to set a meeting and introduce yourself.

- Take notes on the spreadsheet right after you meet someone with details/next steps.

3. POST-EVENT: 
- Connect with everyone you met on LinkedIn.
- Follow up within 72 hours while it's fresh over email/phone/linkedin message. 

In the end we had 40 meetings, zero booth costs, and met great people!

Just paid $99 for a ticket.

We chose our new name today. 

The process was something like this: 

1. I watched David Placek on Lenny's Podcast, and he talked about the Diamond Exercise for naming companies. 

2. It goes like this: you create a diamond shape (we used a Miro board) and have to answer four questions: 
   - How do we define winning? 
   - What do we have to win? 
   - What do we need to win? 
   - What do we need to say?

3. We decided to try it with the founders + marketing team - everyone got really into it. 

4. Some themes and direction came out naturally. 

5. We created a slack channel and excel spreadsheet so everyone could share name suggestions and back them up with a rational.
 
6. We started with 300 names, then 50, then 10, then a shortlist of 3.
 
7. We ran a survey with about 40 people to see what they think about these 3.
 
8. The survey eliminated two names and left us with just one.

9. This is when we started working with Chris Smyth and the guys at Good Habit to build our new brand.
 
10. We told them: "Here's what we're thinking. Feel free to consider it, but curious to see what you come up with something different".
 
11. They sent over a first option - it meant 'going to the bathroom' with some slang wording in bulgarian. 

12. Considering our founders are from bulgaria, Chris said 'guess that's not the one then!'.
 
13. The second was an instant hit - it was loved across the board. 
 
14. We slept on it for a day, asked some advisors, investors, friends and decided to go ahead. 

15. Locked it in and bought the .ai domain. 

16. We're launching in November.

At some point the most important thing is just to make a decision and move on, even if it feels uncomfortable.
