I grew up in Brixton during the 80’s. I realised after my Grandmother, my main caregiver, died, that the price we pay for love, is grief. I turned to alcohol and hard drugs. After a life of turbulent drug using, street homelessness and imprisonment I made the decision to do whatever it took to change my narrative. In 2007 I was handed an indeterminate prison sentence, which meant that I had no idea when I would be released. This was mental torture for me, and I really struggled with it. I had a realisation… I didn’t need gates, bolts, and bars to be in prison. I had been in a prison of my own making for years during my addiction to drugs (For further information on IPP, please see https://www.ungripp.com/ After 12 ½ years in prison I was released, and I managed to secure myself a position within the Civil service. I do some part time and voluntary work as a charity trustee working with young people who are at risk of repeating the mistakes that I made. I wrote a manifesto for and co-founded Taking the Initiative party and was nominated for a https://blac.org.uk/ Bright Lights Award for services to Campaigning. All that said, I am not quite where I want to be, but I am grateful that I am not where I used to be…. Whenever the opportunity arises, I do talks and consultancy to encourage others not to be a prisoner of their past!
