Life is best lived enjoying today, yet we can’t ignore the importance of planning for the next season.  Finances, investing, taxes and retirement income needs are confusing and time consuming.  My goal is to free you to focus on what’s most important; your health, your hobbies, and your family.  Half of my life has been studying and advising successful individuals in areas of financial planning.  I love the outdoors, casting a line, watching ducks break the early dawn sky, and conserving our natural resources for future generations.  As a business owner myself, I understand the complexities of integrating company and personal finances. Keepsakes - a bunch of random mess stored in a shoebox.  Memories of:

Family and friends 
Special times 
Celebrations 
Farewells

We all have some.  It may be odd and unique, or something common.

But they mean something.  And we hang on to them.  Not for any monetary value, but for value of the transportation back in time it takes us to.

Moments we can almost feel in real time.

For years NC State fans have lived in the past…

But, finally we’re making memories now in 2024.

Both men’s and women’s team in the Elite 8 for the first time ever!

A 10 seed chopping down every foe they come across, a present day David and Goliath. 

So 30 years from now I’m trying to ensure there are keepsakes.

With so much being digitial how do we get physical keepsakes?

- no more ticket stubs
- no more Coke cans with team rosters

But we can get t-shirts, signed photos by the team…

All things my wife and I have done.  
(Yes we are excited).

So 30 years from now, we can dust those items off and relive the magic that has happened this March.

In the digital world, never let keepsakes go.

Don’t be FOOLED by these financial myths-


1. All debt is bad

2. You need a lot of money to work with a financial advisor 

3. An IUL or any life insurance policy will average 7% a year in net returns 

4. Roth IRAs are a bad investment if your tax rate will be lower when retired 

5. That anyone can “predict” a market correction, best stock, or anything at all. 

6. Betting on Duke beating NCSU in the Elite 8 is a wise bet.

Most wealth in this country is created by…


Owning a home.  Or several. Real estate in general. 

Probably not a secret, 


Here is the interesting data: 

- most of the very wealthy (think $10 million plus net worth) have a significant (30% or more) of their wealth in real estate, be it their primary home, second homes and investments. 

- Those that are well-to-do, a $1.5-$2 million net worth, have a lot of their net worth in real estate.  For most it’s over 50%.

It may only be their primary home


but here is why it’s impactful.

1. The equity (value minus any mortgage) can be used for things like:

- downsizing to no mortgage at retirement 
- healthcare or long term care costs 
- to buy other properties 
- cash for updates and renovations 

2. Creates a continuum of generational wealth 

- leaving real estate to heirs is a great tax-favorable transfer of wealth

3. People don’t track its value daily 

- this is where equity investors fail; greed and fear get the best of them.  They check their investment values too often and get impatient. Home values slowly, ever so nicely, go up overtime. And people intend to own them for a long time.

What are you planning to retire from?  Does it suck so bad you wanna beat someone?

If so I’d say run and get out fast!

But more and more people I work with, don’t have a hard and fast deadline.

They want to retire, eventually, or slowly phase out of work.  

But more important finding well being without the demand of economic solvency through a necessary paycheck.

If finances were only one-sided:

- make money 
- invest it in a diversified way
- wait and benefit

Then I’d be out of a career.  Its simple. 

But-

Financial stability is also part of socialization, and maximizing utility of time.  

Helping people meet their wants.  It’s all wants.  

People find the benefit of work, meaningful work…

And more Gen X and Millennials I talk to feel this way.


So if your goal isn’t to retire at 60 and be on a back porch all day…
