As co-founder and executive producer, I lead the team designing seminars and educational events, creating multimedia and total immersion environments, producing videos and presentations, planning publications, and writing articles and white papers.

The research for this company began in 1988 when I attended my first professional sales development training seminar. I was hooked on learning and began participating in as many workshops as possible. 

I found that the more I learned, the better my professional results. 

After reading over 1,000 personal and professional development books and participating in 71 seminars ranging from a few hours to 12 months, I formed my ideas about education, consulting, coaching, and life. 

I concluded that the essential aspect of life was Personal Leadership. Leadership became the focus of my research and development.

I started this company to organize our intellectual property, to create manuals, systems, and educational technologies that allow more information to be transferred in less time – with a higher retention rate, to publish and license our intellectual property.

To date, the company owns about 300 articles, bulletins, and white papers, created proprietary Zone Teaching Technologies™, Zone Learning Technologies™, the Optima Zones of Life and Business®, Renaissance for Leaders® BLOG, Optima Seminars®, Optima Coaching®, as well as intellectual property rights to 97 seminars, training programs, certification programs, and services ranging from 4 hours to 12 months in duration.

We built an awesome in-house design team, then established a separate business. Our love of Paris and all things creative and aesthetic led to choosing Zone D’Or as our name, which means Goldzone in French!

Zone D’Or became a full service boutique design and marketing company specializing in brand development, graphics design, interior design, product design and software user interface design.

At Zone d’Or we believe that great design is not good enough. Design should be alive, captivating and aesthetically elevating spiritually.

Excellerated Business Schools

Founded in 1978, the Excellerated Business Schools is an international organization with customers and graduates from more than 26 countries.  Educational programs focus on teaching the generalized principles of Dr. R. Buckminster Fuller, socially conscious entrepreneurship, business, and investing.

The most notable program is the week-long, condensed "Excellerated Business School for Entrepreneurs," which teaches: accounting, finance, sales, marketing, negotiation, raising capital, strategic planning, and attracting and retaining the best talent.

The organization disbanded in 1994 when the partners split assets and went their separate ways.  I joined one of the original partners as a shareholder and CEO to reinvent the business, revitalize the curriculum and transform the sales/marketing.  We resumed delivery of programs and services in 1996.

Under my leadership, the organization expanded throughout the Asia Pacific, including translating the core curriculum into Chinese, training partners, program instructors, and launching programs in China.

I left in 2001 to start a new organization focused on business and personal leadership.

Excellerated Marketing International

Under my leadership, the company produced over 100 business and financial development seminars in 12 countries, growing into a multi-million dollar multinational in its first eight months. In 1998 a team of 3 employees bought the business.

I’ve spent the last 30 years building companies, licensing IP, raising capital, creating systems… and making mistakes.

Some businesses scaled too fast. Some partnerships blew up. I hired wrong, trusted too easily, ignored my instincts, and nearly burned out trying to hold it all together.

Each mistake became a lesson.
Each success revealed another layer of the game.

Eventually, I saw the pattern:
Every business is a reflection of its leader.
The bottleneck isn’t the market... It’s the mindset, maturity, and the invisible beliefs of the founder.

That changed everything.

I stopped chasing the next deal and started designing companies to scale without me.
I began building systems that grew people, not just profits.

And I committed to making business a platform for transformation... for me, my team, and those we serve.

Since then, I’ve founded 20+ companies, created and licensed $39M+ in IP, produced 700+ events for audiences up to 5,000, and raised $30M in capital while retaining full control.

But what matters more:
I’ve built a life I’m proud of.
A business that runs on principles, not personality.
A marriage that’s a real partnership.
And a curriculum: GOLDZONE, designed to help leaders build success that aligns with who they truly are.

Singapore is about to prove the world wrong again! 🇸🇬

Hyundai has built the country's first auto factory in over 40 years! Right in the heart of one of the world's most expensive cities.

Early in my career I worked as an apprentice engineer in an Ericsson factory. I spent six months working in each department, learning the business from the ground up.

It was one of the best experiences I've had.

Conventional wisdom says manufacturing in high-cost cities like Singapore is a thing of the past. But I love it when conventional thinking gets flipped on its head!

Traditional auto manufacturing is about linear production lines and mega-sized factories; the bigger, the better. 

The goal?

Standardization, economies of scale, and specialization are the keys to success in the race to build the biggest, most efficient factory. 

Mega has become Giga.

But here's the thing: 

→ There's an opportunity to do the opposite. 
→ When others zig, we zag.

Hyundai is doing just that. They're pioneering a new manufacturing paradigm in Singapore by going micro, not mega.

This microfactory may be small, but it's packed with cutting-edge technology:

→ Autonomous robot dogs patrol the factory floor.
→ Robotic arms handle the assembly with precision.
→ AI monitors every step, ensuring quality and efficiency.

And instead of a traditional, linear production line, this factory uses a cell-based model that offers:

→ More customization.
→ More automation.
→ More flexibility.
→ Fewer workers are needed per car produced.

It's a bold move; time will tell if it pays off. But what I love about this story is that Hyundai is zagging while everyone else is zigging.

They are even competing with themselves!

This kind of thinking inspires me to look for opportunities where others see obstacles and spot new paradigms where others see the status quo.

These are the future leaders and the businesses to watch, follow, and invest in.

That’s not an exaggeration...

Here are five lessons from Family Business: From Good to Great... lessons I’ve lived, taught, and earned the hard way:

1. The vision must include more than today’s business.
It must address:

→ The deeper purpose that holds it all together
→ The current operations
→ The next generation
→ Financial growth

When the vision stops with you… The business stops with you.

2. Values must be codified... not assumed.
If you don’t write them down, align around them, and revisit them regularly... you’ll have unspoken rules no one agrees on… until conflict erupts.

Values aren’t posters. They’re agreements.

3. The business is not the family.
One is built on clarity.
The other is built on love.
Don’t confuse them.

The business needs structure, standards, and results. The family needs compassion, space, and understanding.

Trying to force one into the shape of the other breaks both.

4. Power struggles destroy everything.
Without a clear org chart and decision-making structure, families revert to dysfunction. Fighting for control destroys trust... and trust is the foundation of both family and business.

Run the business like a high-performing team, not a holiday dinner table.

5. The best leader must earn it.
It doesn’t matter if they’re the eldest, the loudest, or the most entitled. What matters is vision, capability, and earned respect.

→ No automatic appointments
→ No titles without experience
→ If the best person is outside the family, they get the job

This isn’t personal… It’s survival.

Family business is a gift. But only when the structure matches the love. Otherwise, both get destroyed.

A wrong hire used to cost $10k to $50k, now the more senior the hire, the more millions a bad hire can cost.

Getting the right people on the bus, and the wrong ones off is one of the most important functions of a leader.

Despite best intentions… I’ve had the wrong people on the bus… and found out too late! The bus crashed.

The wrong people fight over the steering wheel, while others watch on and do nothing.

This bus metaphor is funny when it’s not your bus!

Conventional wisdom is often… wrong! Especially all the pival espoused by many leadership gurus who never did anything in the real world.

Sucessful leadership isn’t about feel good platitudes or catchy phrases. It’s about getting results, and often it doesn’t feel good!

I thought leadership would get easier as I became more successful...
Instead, the challenges got bigger… and far more expensive.

Growth means:
→ The risks get bigger! (gulp)
→ The stakes are higher! (so much to lose)
→ And the pressure never really goes away!

A wrong hire used to cost me $10k to $50k, now the more senior the hire, the more millions a bad hire can cost.

One time, I hired a CEO who said all the right things. He came highly recommended and invested $100k in our elite leadership program... but here's what we didn't know... they had ethics issues that only came out later.

It turns out they had created software for their previous company that skimmed a small percent off the top!

The board fired him... after the damage was done. It cost us millions.

A single misaligned client can drain everyone's energy and block opportunities. Have you noticed that the high paying clients tend to be low maintenance, and the low paying clients high maintenance?

And when your people plateau, all of a sudden... you are the bottleneck!

The bottom line is that whatever got you to your current level of success... won't take you to the next level.

Leadership at the top isn't about charisma or personality.
It's about frameworks, systems, and tools that make people and performance predictable.
