Hi I'm Andy, a highly experienced SEO consultant with 10 years experience driving performance in organic growth in competitive verticals. I work at 10Up as a Senior Audience Growth Strategist providing SEO strategy and advice to large clients, covering everything from audits to content strategy.

I was previously Head of SEO at iTech Media leading 14 people across three diverse teams covering on-page, technical and off-page (digital PR). My teams covered a range of geographies including UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, DACH and emerging markets like LATAM.

The iGaming affiliate marketing niche is incredibly competitive. My SEO teams obtained multiple top 5 positions for hugely lucrative keywords like 'online casino', 'online gambling' and many more.
The digital PR team achieved consistent success outreaching interesting campaigns gaining links and coverage on popular publications like Metro, Daily Mail, Guardian, MSN, Yahoo and many others.

Outside of work I love endurance running (I've completed over 25 ultra marathons), being a parent to three amazing young boys and creating my own sites.

🫵 Many niche./affiliate  sites that got hit had 'reviews' that weren't really reviews.
Hear me out.

If someone searches [x product] review, they're almost certainly looking for an objective rating about it written  by someone who has used it. They'll also want/be expecting that person to be an authority about the topic itself.
So if I want a review of the new Garmin running watch,  I'm not going to give much credence to one written by an expert in, say, electric cars.

❌ Many of the so-called 'reviews' I see on low-quality affiliate sites are just a re-hash of basic information, with no indication or proof the author has used the product. it shouldn't be any surprise these got hit by multiple Google updates. They don't give the user any value at all (especially so if SGE can give the product info anyway).

If you're going to write a review, think about:
👉 What things haven't been covered by other reviews that you could? (Ideas - niche use-cases, minor niggles with the design that most people haven't spotted, use in different weathers/at different temperatures, ease of fixing, accessibility issues)
👉 How you can demonstrate you've actually used the product (Ideas - unique and perhaps unexpected photos. talk about how long you've used it and in what conditions, videos)
👉 How you can collate and present data that already exists in a unique and useful way (ideas - table with a comparison of the previous model or competitor equivalent, user review ratings vs competitors, diagrams, charts)
👉 Saying what you DON'T like about the product. If the 'review' is all about how amazing the product is and how there's nothing wrong with it, it's simply not authentic and credible
👉 Saying what other features or upgrades you'd love to see the manufacturer/provider offer in future
👉 Showing some unusual features  and how to find/use them
👉 Talk about what things surprised you (good or bad)
👉 Explain it like you would a friend who is into similar things as you are

A great example of this (although I think the page formatting could be way better) are the running watch reviews done by DCRainMaker .com. They cover pretty much any data point or opinion you'd need on each watch and it's obvious from the start that they're complete experts.

Bottom line - if you're just going to do a 'review' using generic information, with basic features & benefits that offer the user no real value, don't expect to rank.
If you're in a highly competitive vertical, even more so!
