This is a skill born from facilitating the RAF’s worldclass leadership training, and 20+ years of “on the job” leadership experience. One of the toughest things a manager in the armed forces must do is to tell a parent they’re not having a summer holiday, or Christmas, with their families because they’re going on operations instead. Something I had to do multiple times. Despite being required to give devastating orders that severely impacts personal lives, a military manager must still find a way of maintaining high performance in stressful situations. This requires an in-depth understanding of who the individual is, how they’re motivated, how they need to be communicated with, what strengths they utilise, what their conflict sequences are, and how they’re brought out of conflict.
