Director of Engineering

As a director of engineering, I am at the top of my tribe's teams as representing the engineering/tech executive leadership. I am leading the Order Fulfillment tribe at Delivery Hero MENA | talabat in both of our tech hubs in Cairo, EGY and Dubai, UAE.

The Order Fulfillment tribe's vision is "Delivering the most trustworthy experience (accurate, fast, clear and empathetic) for our users (customers, agents and vendors) to make most informed-decisions upon placing an order". So, it's all about the post-order experience through 7 cross-functional teams distributed between UAE and EGY and 40+ engineers.

My key responsibilities as a tribe lead are:

● Site lead for Cairo tech hub. 
● Helping engineering managers and and senior managers to staff their teams as per the future product and business strategies.
● Empowering engineering managers and senior managers to build self-organizing teams where I make sure that the teams are fully autonomous and making data-informed decisions. 
● Empowering engineering managers and senior managers to build Product-Engineering teams.
● An e2e ownership of people development where we make sure of creating the growth opportunities for our engineers across many different levels and aspects where we assure that our teams are having a clear career path and they are progressing there!
● A hand-in-hand partnership with my counterparts in Product & Business making sure that we are delivering the needed and desired value to the business.
● An e2e ownership with engineering managers and senior managers to raise the bar and having a high-quality deliverables following the technical excellence practices along with reducing/eliminating the technical debt as we go!
● Being part of the tech leadership council makes me contributing to the organizational strategies and leading many initiatives across the entire organizations through many different departments.
● Empowering and supporting teams during any running transformation.

Engineering Tribe Lead

● A engineering domain leader where I was leading the Transmission & Tools domain. This domain was a set of critical tools in the platform where the teams are responsible for managing the entire lifecycle of order transmission and dispatching to our vendors, managing POS integrations with key-account vendors, managing the data transformation to the real-time data hub and finally managing the internal back-office tools.
● As a senior manager and domain lead, I was managing 3 Engineering Manager along with many individual contributors when it comes to their career growth.
● Lead and inspire talented engineers in an agile development environment to innovate, implement, and deploy and own end-to-end complex software solutions in a commercial, mission-critical environment for millions of customers.
● Develop and grow engineering talent through effective mentoring, coaching, and retention strategies in a fast-growing, highly competitive economic environment.
● A partner with product and other stakeholders, to drive desired outcomes.
● Manage planning and execution to successfully deliver value to our customers and partners/vendors.
● Accountable for the performance and results of a team within own discipline or function.

Senior Engineering Manager

● Leading Order Transmission and Data Integration teams.
● Lead and inspire talented engineers in an agile development environment to innovate, implement, and deploy and own end-to-end complex software solutions in a commercial, mission-critical environment for millions of customers. 
● Develop and grow engineering talent through effective mentoring, coaching, and retention strategies in a fast-growing, highly competitive economic environment. 
● Design, write and deliver software to improve the availability, scalability, latency and efficiency of Talabat’s services. 
● Manage planning and execution to successfully deliver value to our customers. 
● Partner with product and other stakeholders, to drive desired outcomes.

Engineering Manager

I have joined talabat as senior engineer, but after 3 months (probation period) the management decided to build a team where we need to focus on maintaining and building the order transmission channels we had at that time.

I've started leading a team of 2 engineers and kept building it till we became 6 engineers along with QA engineer leading that new era of the order transmission and providing our partners (vendors) the best experience ever (through web tools, tablets, GPRS and POS integrations) where we were transmitting hundreds of thousands orders every day.

The team was also responsible for managing some of the internal tools where the content and operations teams could do a better job with faster SLA.

Responsibilities:
● Accountable for delivering good product where we solve a problem and provide a value to the community.
● Working with development & product managers to create an environment of achievement, fun - fostering high morale and a highly motivated team.
● Enhancing development processes to provide continuous improvement to the iterative development model.
● Collaborating with the product teams to set and plan for the OKRs on a quarterly basis based on the organization north star.
● Monitor, guide, and rate development team on their work performance and coach them on their career progression.

Software Development Lead

• Responsible for designing and creating highly available systems/services which usually were transmitting up to 2M SMSs per day
• Providing technical mentoring to all of development teams

Principal Software Engineer

Advansys Telecom

I was responsible for developing the SMS platform at Advansys Telecom, I successfully built a platform which included APIs, BG Workers, Monitoring, Alerting, Reporting & Dashboards.

A little about the SMS platform:
Advansys Telecom is one of the telecom aggregators for Value-Added Services (aka. VAS) for all of the media channels in Egypt TV & Radio. The platform had an opened tunnel (connectivity) with all of the telecom providers (e.g. Vodafone, Orange & Etisalat) through SMPP connection with their SMC, and it was receiving the messages the customers send to the provider through the SMPP tunnel and re-route it to the corresponding TV channel or Radio station based on many different aspects. It has a real-time processing algorithm to process the incoming messages.

Insights about the platform:
- Outages of the SMS platform have been eliminated to ZERO due to the ability of self-healing and highly sensitive alerts which have been configured there which predicts the system breaking point.
- Ability to handle the messages (max. throughput was 1M messages per day) without impacting the delivery time of the message (messages were being processed concurrently through highly managed threading mechanism)
- Real-time dashboards and reporting was a great thing as there was a lack of observability on the SMS traffic for a given time, and the old system was only allowing 24hrs reporting due to the slow processing.

With over 15 years of software development experience across various industries, I am a passionate and effective leader of engineering teams and projects. At talabat, part of Delivery Hero, I lead the FinTech engineering division, where I oversee the design and delivery of large-scale distributed systems that power the platform.

My core competencies include engineering excellence, product-minded engineering, system design and architecture,  continuous delivery, theory of constraints, software architecture, and building self-organizing teams. I am also obsessed with people development, coaching, and mentoring, extreme programming (aka. XP), and social programming to foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and quality.
