Here is my process: 

➡ I post when I feel like it
➡ Very quickly without thinking too much about it
➡ I write about whatever comes to my mind
➡ I just check LinkedIn when I am bored and like a couple of posts
➡ Writing comes naturally 
➡ I just post it and forget about it
➡ And I’ve only been doing this for the past 3 months

This is what people like to believe.

The reality is different:

➡ I post every day
➡ I use tools to verify grammar, correctness and I rewrite a post a couple of times
➡ I have a content strategy that requires weekly planning 
➡ I plan my time and engagement on LinkedIn: when, who, what
➡ The more I write the higher my expectations on my writing are 
➡ So I review my content constantly and gather feedback on it  
➡ And I’ve only been doing this for the past 3 years.

What keeps me going?

People 😊
with some I exchanged thoughts and learnings 
with some I collaborated on multiple projects
some became friends
with some I lost touch
but I learned something from every single one of them.

Make sure not just one person always gets stuck with the tough/annoying jobs
Spread these tasks around to keep things fair

➡ Celebrate the small wins:
Acknowledge and celebrate those who take on these tasks regularly
Whether it's a shoutout in a meeting or a simple thank you, recognition matters

➡ Do more than just your job
check up on people 
offer to help

My cheat sheet to deal with perfection:


➡ Always have a deadline 
➡ Define the definition of done before starting the task 
➡ Do things last minute so I can blame the “imperfection” on lack of time 
➡ Get feedback as fast as possible - share with others from the first draft
➡ Ask for validation: “I know this can be better but is it good enough to send it out?”
➡ Build outer accountability: have people depend on your work being done (not perfect!)
➡ Get a break from the task - for some reason after a break the task looks closer to the finish line
➡ Write down on paper all the tasks I have to do - I love crossing things on paper and that pushes me forward to finish things faster

Yesterday I had the first face-to-face coaching session in a long time.

My client was like: I am tired of zoom

So I said: let try it out

And so we met in a open space
we sat outside in the sun 
and we talked things through.

I quickly remembered the benefits of face to face meeting:

➡ the friendly environment helps people to open up
➡ I felt recharged after our session instead of screen fatigue
➡ the outside and the less formal context makes small talk easier 
➡ the body language says more about how we feel than our words
➡ people are more engaged when there is no email popping up on the screen 
 
Being together face to face will always have a different impact on people's interactions than the online world.

It’s not always possible and should not be required 

but it’s nice to mix it up from time to time 🙂

One ongoing struggle I face and work on every day is:

I don’t trust people by default.

I used to think this is smart:

▶️ Behaviour: keeping always my guard up 
▶️ Expected impact: strong, powerful, confident
▶️ Actual impact: unapproachable, scary

▶️ Behaviour: doing everything on my own because I can do it better 
▶️ Expected impact: very capable, resilient, reliable
▶️ Actual impact: overwhelmed, blocking other people’s growth

▶️ Behaviour: allowing no mistakes to myself or my team
▶️ Expected impact: effective, successful
▶️ Actual impact: overwhelming, people tired and scared 


▶️ Inevitably all these behaviours led me to:
▶️ Expected impact: success
▶️ Actual impact: burnout 😣

Feedback is a required soft skill to grow as an engineer.

There is no way around it.

Alexandre Zajac, SDE @Amazon, shares 9 actionable tips on giving out great feedback:

0. Be specific💡
Be clear and precise about what actions or behaviors you're providing feedback on
1 piece of feedback = 1 idea.

1. Do it in time💡
Address issues as soon as possible to prevent them from becoming habits. 
The best time is always now.

2. Be constructive💡
Don’t focus only on what's good or bad. Provide actionable suggestions for improvement.

3. Have empathy 💡
Consider the recipient's feelings and perspective when delivering feedback. 
How you deliver a message can be as important as the message itself.

4. Encourage dialogue💡
Giving feedback should not be one sided. 
Create an open environment where the receiver of feedback feels comfortable discussing feedback.

5. Practice active listening💡
Don’t listen just to make it a 2 way street. 
Pay attention to the responses and be willing to adapt your approach based on their feedback.

6. Be data driven💡
In good faith, data doesn’t lie. 
Explain why the feedback is important and how it impacts their work and the team. 
Focus on the work, not the person.  

7. Be consistent💡
Incorporate feedback regularly, as long as it’s needed. 
Don’t make it regular because it fills a spot in the calendar.

8. Follow up💡
Check in periodically to see how the receiver of feedback  is progressing and offer additional support if needed.

Self-confidence does not mean “I can do anything!”

At least not for me.

Self-confidence means:

➡ “I can chase any dream I am willing to put the effort in

➡ I know my strengths and my shortcomings 
and I am willing to put the required effort and consistency to get there. 

➡ There will be some bumps on the road but I will learn from them and move on, and I will always keep my eyes open for other paths that might open in my way.”

How to solve a conflict in tech where both parties are right:

Here is an example:


🙋‍♂️Product: please build a blue delete button 

👩‍💻Developer: done ✅

🙋‍♂️Product: 
clicks the button 
the button does nothing 😠

🙋‍♂️Product goes back to the 👩‍💻 developer: 
“The task is not done. The button does nothing”

🤷‍♀️ Developer: 
“You asked for a blue delete button
here is a delete button
it clicks
it says delete
it’s blue”


▶️ Possible way to tackle it:

One of the parties involved stops the blaming circle and calls out the situation for what it is: a misunderstanding 

They start discussing on the functionality of the delete button and how do they plan to approach it 😊


▶️ This is where you come in.
You can be the one stopping the blaming circle 🙂

Here’s what might be happening:
▶️ You’re the MVP in taking the blame for things you didn’t do
▶️ You often feel like you’re always the one in the wrong
▶️ You're as unsure about your statements as a glitchy GPS

Think you might not have this issue?

Challenge Accepted:

Try sailing through a whole day without uttering a single "sorry." 
Yes, even if you accidentally email the entire office at 2 AM!

If you struggle with the challenge:
