I didn’t fall into tech—I started there.

I was one of the few kids who could actually fix your computer.

No surprise that one of my first career-like jobs was at a startup managed services provider (MSP) in Chattanooga, crawling under desks and cursing legacy Windows systems. I loved the puzzle of it all—but the nonstop stress was a lot for someone so young. So I took a breath and made a leap ...

... into publishing. I spent years researching, editing, writing, and proofreading—all in an effort to help authors find their voice and wrangle words into stories that made a positive impact.

Fast forward a decade and some change, and I’ve now circled back. Only this time, I’m telling the story of a tech company.

I’m Director of Marketing at WYRE Technology. I built our marketing department from scratch, writing, strategizing, branding, campaigning, collaborating, and figuring out what makes people pay attention in a redemptive, no-scare-tactics-allowed way. 

My background in tech helps me pair real understanding with content that actually connects.

It feels so much more 𝘴𝘶𝘣𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭, like moving from high school to Yale.

Big decisions make people nervous ... until they see you land on your feet.

Then the idea feels a little less impossible.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻.

There's a personality type that thrives in fast-paced, high-stakes work. You know the one. Never quite satisfied with what's already been done. Always keeping an eye out for the next problem to solve, the next angle to sharpen, the next format that could be a game-changer.

In tech. In marketing. And especially where the two connect.

Having this personality type can be an asset. It can also be slippery.

The momentum of challenging work has a pull to it. And those of us who are wired to push boundaries are exactly the people most susceptible to being swept along by it. It's not poor boundaries. It's not laziness in reverse. It's that the work 𝘳𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵. 

You get better results, so you push harder. You push harder, so you get better results. Rinse, repeat.

Here's the irony that doesn't get talked about enough, especially in content and marketing: Our entire job is to connect with humans. To write things that make an impact. To make people feel seen, empowered, and confident enough to act.

But the 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 that content is expected to be produced—whether the expectation is internal or external—can disconnect the producer from their humanity. And the output suffers for it, even when you have max volume.

You can't write with empathy when you’re optimizing yourself into a content machine.

So where’s the middle ground?

It’s a content or marketing person who takes time throughout the day to do human things. Who reads things that have nothing to do with their industry. Who gets bored sometimes and lets that boredom become curiosity. Who measures success by whether something actually landed, not just whether it closed out in Asana.

Even writing that, I can feel the itchiness of it. All the messages hitting me that are so heavily focused on iterating fast and furious.

But the marketers doing the most interesting work aren't the ones who produce the most. They're the ones who keep their curiosity: in the audience, the problem, the craft. 

And that requires protecting something that no content calendar can schedule: taking the time to be human.

Small kindnesses are wildly underrated!

You never know when holding the door is the best thing that happens to someone all day :))

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗚𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘄, 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Candidates are doing their research. They're reading your reviews 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 they apply, 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 they interview, and definitely 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 they accept an offer.

A 2.8 rating with 60 reviews that all say the same three things needs to be addressed.

If something was genuinely broken and you've worked to fix it, say that. 

If you're in the middle of a culture shift, say that too. 

A job posting that pretends everything is fine while the reviews say otherwise can make strong candidates take a cautious step back.

Transparency in the hiring process goes both ways 🙌

𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀.

It’s not a shrug.
It’s not immediate acceptance.
It’s not pretending something didn’t knock you on your ass.

Resilience is closer to a rubber band.

It stretches.
Absorbs impact.
Rebounds.

And sometimes, yes, it snaps. But 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 is the willingness to repair that tear, then keep going.

There is no timeline. No "right" way. Just the path that works best for you 💪

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲?

Hint: It isn’t about titles or total autonomy.

In content roles, ownership usually looks like this:

👍  𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀. If you’re accountable for results, you have a say in priorities, not just execution.
👍  𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀. You understand why the work exists, not just what needs to be produced.
👍  𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀. When something new comes in, you can say, “This means something else moves.”
👍  𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. You’re brought in early enough to shape direction, not just polish it at the end.
👍  𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗽𝘂𝘁. Success is measured by impact, not volume.

Without those things, content roles can become reactive—content for content's sake.

Clear ownership doesn’t slow content teams down. It gives their work a spine.
