I'm making a short film and I need your help!

I'm looking to raise $4,000 in 4 weeks for my documentary short film, 'Trail Therapy.'

'Trail Therapy' follows Sharon  H. Mosley LCMHCS, a Black woman runner and therapist living in Durham, NC, as she trains for the Tar Heel 10 miler 11 years after her first appearance in the race. 

Jordan Mendys (he/him) and I have been documenting her journey and are almost ready to wrap up the film's production. Before we head into post-production with Taylor D. Adams, we wanted to share our progress with our community and allow you guys to show up as only you can to get us across the finish line (I couldn't resist a good race pun, sue me). 

This story hits close to home for a few reasons:

✅ nature is healing
✅ movement is powerful
✅ therapy is something I wish everyone had equitable access to
✅ owning our stories and narratives is critical to cultural change

And ideally, I want to be a part of a culture that normalizes 

➡️ The connection between mental and physical health
➡️ How important community can be in healing journeys
➡️ Underrepresented folks stepping into the spotlight

Sharon H. Mosley LCMHCS is a runner and therapist in Durham, NC who is returning to the Tar Heel 10 miler almost 12 years after an eye-opening visit to her doctor. Jordan Mendys (he/him) and I have been documenting her journey, and Taylor D. Adams will be editing the film to bring it to a screen near you.

Andrea Martin Inokon encapsulated how things that sometimes don't work out for you at the time REALLY work out for you in the long run. 

There's a lot of stigma about our relationships with work, and how taking certain paths can be daunting or not make sense for others.

I'm glad I got to hear her story in this roundtable episode.

I wanted to try a different format to meet one of the needs my audience expressed that they had trouble with - business funding. 

While I wanted to talk with Andrea and Corey L. Barbour about grants, angel investing, and commercial lending, I also wanted to make space for the audience to learn more about their entrepreneurship journey.

In this episode, Corey L. Barbour and Andrea Martin Inokon share their insights on grants and commercial lending.

This time last week I was hanging out in the Shenandoah Valley attending the Startup Champions Network Summit. ✨

It was an intentional space for me to meet ecosystem builders from across the country, and spend time with the PLACE Builders Fellowship Cohort – a program co-created by EcoMap Technologies, Inc. and Forward Cities. 

I was accepted into the program last month and have truly enjoyed learning from folks doing great work in communities across the country. Arsh Haque, Charlyn Moss, Mari Hicks PMP, Erica Williams, MBA, Justus Pugh, Paco Ramos-Meyer, Sarah Spear, and I are collectively putting our brains together to

✅ define what entrepreneurial ecosystem building looks like in our communities
✅ determine what roles we play in connecting people to place
✅ support each other in building roadmaps for supporting sustainable entrepreneurial success
✅ find the best food on the East Coast (Cajou Creamery is a top contender)

This is our second in-person event, and I can't wait to host them in the beautiful city of Durham next month!

But until then, I'll be sitting with a few questions that were posed to me at the summit:

➡️ What value can Honey and Hustle provide in addition to training for early-stage entrepreneurs?
➡️ As the popularity of DEI fades and sensationalism wanes, how do we keep the momentum when it's no longer 'cool' to invest in diverse, inclusive communities?
➡️ What makes my soul sing?
➡️ What's the core question you're working with your community to solve?
➡️ What are the essential qualities of home for you?

P.S. It's so rare that I post anything in black & white, but my new friend Nic Askew has inspired me. 

I love Grammarly, but it has two huge flaws.

1. It doesn't have the ability to recognize when you're writing in your voice or when writing in your voice contradicts traditional grammar rules. 

2. It doesn't integrate well with desktop apps, where I prefer to do 90% of my long-form writing (sorry not sorry Google Chrome).

Grammarly has been one of those tools I didn't think I needed, and now I wouldn't want to go without it.

It helps me

✅ Write better emails
✅ Write better everything
✅ Stay encouraged through my writing journey
✅ Recognize the tones I use most when I write

The gamification of writing can't be understated, and the total number of words they've analyzed for me since I've been using them is wild (it's over 3M and counting 🤯). 

The constant writing critiques can be discouraging though, especially when you know it's because you're writing in a casual tone that matches your voice.

Finding ways to inject my personality in my newsletter to keep it from being stale is hard enough, having Grammarly underline sections that I repeat often is annoying. 

But I get it.

It's simply not meant for that.

Coworking is SaaS - Space as a Service.

Coworking spaces have been pivotal in my journey as a creative entrepreneur, and our latest guest on Honey and Hustle share's the app he created to make running these spaces smooth.

DeShawn Brown is a North Carolina State University alum who shares why he believes coworking spaces are the perfect creator and entrepreneur incubators. Diverse coworking models can focus on different things:

✅ maker spaces

Struggling to write online?

This one simple trick helped me start writing daily in 2021:

Gamify your writing. 

Having a way to track my writing streak with Jay Clouse's Tweet 100 challenge helped me to stay engaged and challenged my to think of ways to package my stories, ideas, learnings, and expertise consistently. 

Not every post was a "banger."

I couldn't post more than one tweet thread a week. 

I had to think of ways to incorporate photos and videos to play on my strengths as a visual storyteller. 

But after 365 days, I had a year's worth of posts to analyze and build upon. 

And that's what's important. Sticking with a creative pursuit long enough to see what works, what could be better, and what other areas of you brain are untapped. 

So start today. Start messy. Just start.

The best productivity hack I've found is simply doing less stuff. 

Having a long to-do list is nothing more than a recipe for failure.

You put way too much pressure on yourself to accomplish the impossible, THEN you're hard on yourself when you inevitably don't get it all done. 

Sound familiar?

It may be hard at first, but I highly recommend being honest with yourself about what your priorities are and learning how to say 'no' to things that aren't on that list. 

People will understand, and your body will thank you.

One morning, Sharon ran 5 miles on the American Tobacco Trail and then went for a walk with a friend. This friend happened to be her son's former swim coach and the person who talked her into participating in her first-ever race - the Ramblin' Rose Triathlon. 

I can't wait for you guys to hear this hilarious and heartwarming story in the film.
