When the pandemic hit, I was subscribed to the "shoulds" of the entrepreneurial rat race - speaking in a different city every week, running three disparate companies, working 100 hours per week - consistently. I dreamed of waking up in the tropics and hopping on a motorcycle to surf at sunrise. I dreamed of working a few hours per day then spending the rest of the day enjoying the beauty of the jungle. It seemed an impossible dream until I realized, anything is possible - it was all a choice and my present life was the sum of my previous choices. It was time to burn it down. I put my home on the market, sold 1 of my 3 companies, and hired more team members into my remaining 2 companies. I booked a 1-way flight to Nicaragua to start a new life. The first morning I woke up in the tropics, I couldn’t believe my dream had come true. But, a few months in, I was back to my old, workaholic ways. It was time to burn it all down, but with greater intention. I sold 1 company entirely and sold the agency part of the other. I niched into the work I loved, working a few hours per day on zoom. Three months after the burn, I was working with the exact clients I dreamed of in groups and earning more than I had when I was a dentist.
