I’m an entrepreneur, product leader, and holistic coach. With a decade of tech experience as a 3x founder and former Lead Product Manager at BetterUp, Meta, Shopify, and early-stage start-ups I've worked on both consumer and business products in AI, Virtual Reality, youth, trust & safety, compliance, health & wellness, B2B SaaS.

Recently, I was on a podcast with a 15-year-old.

He asked me a very tough question most adults avoid: Should AI be a friend, coach, or therapist for teens?

Here’s what I shared:

1) Treat AI like Google — powerful, not infallible. AI is a tool, not the truth. Just like Google or social media, it’s a starting point for ideas, structure, and support, not the final answer. The healthiest posture is “learn → verify → personalize,” not “copy → paste → obey.” Ask it to explain and compare, not just solve.

2) The four risks nobody wants to talk about. 
→ Over-reliance
→ Misrepresentation 
→ Replacement of human connection (loneliness disguised as chat)
→ Discernment (losing the habit of asking “who said this and why?”).

3) Not all “AI for mental health” is the same. If you’re using a general model, prompt it to be pragmatic: “Give pros/cons, cite sources, and offer alternative paths.” 

Curate how you use it, not just if you use it.

4) Beware the “catch-all therapist” effect. General chatbots tend to mix CBT, DBT, and coaching into a single generic soup. If you’re going to use AI, ask it to choose a single approach and justify why that approach fits your situation, then sanity-check with a human.

5) Use AI as training wheels, not a forever crutch. It can be a safe place to organize thoughts at 1 am, draft a plan, or rehearse a hard conversation… then bring that to a parent, counselor, or friend. Great AI experiences should nudge you back to people: “You’re talking to a robot. Here’s when to seek human help.”

6) Burnout: make AI your planner, not just a tool that agrees with everything you are saying.

Ask AI to:
 ↳ Break overwhelm into next actions, timelines, and trade-offs.
 ↳ Challenge you (“What could fail?”) instead of flattery (“Great idea!”).
 ↳ Pull credible sources you can actually read.

When in doubt, prompt it to be sober and specific, not motivational.

7) Purpose comes from experiments, not perfect prompts.
AI can widen the option set (paths, pros/cons, combos), but the engine of purpose is trying things in the real world. Ask: “What energizes me? What would I do without a deadline?” Use AI to propose 3 tiny experiments this week, then measure how each made you feel.

8) Design matters: age-aware, nudge-rich AI is the future. A 13-year-old and a 17-year-old need different rails. Thoughtful products will build in: breaks, check-ins (“Why are you asking this?”), context labels (“This is not medical advice”), and seamless handoffs to humans.

9) The one habit every parent can teach: ask yourself first. Before touching any app, pause: “What do I think the answer might be?” Then go to AI, then to trusted humans, then back to yourself.
