I speak, write and advise on Speaking Up in Organisations, specifically to break the silence on wrongdoing. I founded Speak Up At Work to diagnose the Speak Up Culture in companies and assess their response to reports on wrongdoing, harassment, unsafe and unethical practices. This helps companies address emerging risks early enough before they get too big and become public. Imagine if: - Engineers at Volkswagen were able to tell management that it was impossible to design a clean engine that was small and affordable, without fear of losing their jobs. - US gymnasts’ complaints about Dr Nassar who had been sexually abused were heard and believed, saving over 250 girls from being abused. - Officers and advisors to 1MDB felt safe and supported enough to raise the alarm before billions were siphoned out. If there is wrongdoing going on in your organisation, it is highly likely your people know about it. But do YOU know? How can you make sure that a welder in a remote location is reporting an unsafe practice which if left unattended could kill people? How can you be sure the junior accountant who spots major discrepancies will be heard when she reports it to the audit partner? How can you be sure that the women harassed by your star performer feel safe enough to come forward and tell you? There is a great deal of censorship before bad news reaches the CEO’s office or the Board. We are not out to blame anyone who hides information, but rather explore whether the culture, policies and systems in place create a closed environment, denying you of much needed information. I can identify gaps and provide tools to support you in implementing a more open Speak Up Culture where your people feel empowered to report issues knowing they will be heard.
