I used to grab any icon I saw online and paste it into my work.

It looked fine to me… until I realized why my designs never looked “balanced.”

The problem?

Those icons came from different places, different weights, and different styles. 

So they never felt like they belonged together.

That’s when I discovered icon libraries.

👉 Libraries like Phosphor, Feather, Remix, or Material Icons give you a consistent style across your entire design.

Niching down might not be the best option!

When I first started UI/UX, everybody kept saying:
“Niche down, niche down, niche down.”

And yes, niching is powerful but here’s the danger if you do it too early.

👉 You lock yourself into one corner before you even explore.

👉 You miss the chance to experiment with different industries (fintech, e-commerce, healthtech, edtech).

👉 You don’t fully discover what excites you the most.

As a beginner, your first goal isn’t to become “the SaaS dashboard designer” or “the mobile banking app designer.”

Your first goal is to learn how design adapts to different contexts, users, and problems.

Because design in fintech ≠ design in e-commerce.

Design for a Gen Z audience ≠ design for retirees.

Each project teaches you something new about people and that’s what sharpens your craft.

Niching too early is like deciding your favorite food after only tasting rice.
You might miss out on jollof, pasta, or shawarma. 😅

My advice: explore widely first.

Build range. Learn to design across different challenges.

Then niche down when you’ve found the lane that excites you and pays you.

Nothing kills your credibility faster than scrolling endlessly looking for a screen during a client call.

"Uh... just give me a second... I know it's here somewhere..."

I used to do this all the time. Mid-presentation, trying to find that one variation I showed last week, scrolling past random explorations and unnamed frames while the client waited.

Not anymore.

Here's how I organize my Figma files now:

1. Name every screen
Not "Frame 247." Actual names like "Dashboard - Empty State" or "Onboarding 

2. Use a plugin to name layers
I don't do this manually anymore. There are plugins that auto-name your layers based on what they are. Game changer when you need to quickly find something in a complex file.

3. Create a cover page
First thing clients see when they open the file. Add context, instructions, notes about what's final vs. exploration. Sets expectations immediately.

4. Keep components on a separate page
Don't mix your component library with your actual screens. Keeps your main pages clean and makes it easier to navigate during calls.

This isn't about being perfect. It's about not looking lost when someone's paying you to have answers.

Bonus tip: Before every client call, spend 2 minutes clicking through your file. Know where everything is. Future you will thank you.

Using 3, 4, sometimes 5 different fonts in one project.

Here's why that's killing your design 👇
The Problem with Font Overload:

→ It confuses the visual hierarchy
→ Makes your design look unprofessional and cluttered

→ Slows down readability

→ Creates inconsistency across your brand
Think of fonts like voices in a conversation. Too many voices talking at once? 

Just two or three? Is good enough.

The Rule: Stick to 2 fonts max (3 if you really need an accent font).

One for headings. One for body text. That's it.

Here are some killer font pairings that just work:

For Modern & Clean:

Poppins + Inter
Manrope + DM Sans

For Professional & Corporate:

Montserrat + Open Sans
Raleway + Lato

For Bold & Creative:

Playfair Display + Source Sans Pro
Bebas Neue + Roboto

For Elegant & Minimal:

Cormorant Garamond + Lato
Libre Baskerville + Montserrat

Pro tip: Pair a serif (decorative) with a sans-serif (clean). The contrast creates balance without competition.

I once made the mistake of starting a client project without a contract or invoice.

I was too excited.

The client sounded nice, the project looked fun, and I told myself, “Let’s just start first.”

Biggest mistake of my life.

Halfway through, they kept adding “just one more thing.”

When I delivered, they delayed payment.

At some point, the chats started sounding like excuses and also like I was begging for the money that I worked for.


That was the day I learned:

👉 A contract is not formality. It’s for clarification .
👉 An invoice is not a receipt. It’s proof.

These two things separate “please pay me” from “payment due.”

They separate stress from structure.

As creatives, we sometimes think professionalism is just about how beautiful the design looks.

But real professionalism starts before you even touch Figma.

That’s why now, no matter how small the job is, I don’t move a pixel until there’s a contract or invoice in place.

Because protecting your craft is just as important as creating it.

The hardest part of being a UI/UX designer no one tells you.

Nobody really tells you about:

• Burnout from chasing deadlines and staring at screens all day with the fear of using glasses due to too much screen time😂.

• Imposter syndrome: that voice that asks “am I even good enough?” after scrolling through other designers work.

• The inconsistency phase where one month you land gigs and the next month it’s just silent.

• Unbalanced sleeping schedules, working till 3AM because “that flow just has to be perfect and client deadline has to be met.

• Struggling to explain to family why you’re always “on the laptop” but not a “yahoo boy or girl.” 😅

These are the silent battles most designers face.

And yet, we keep showing up. We keep learning, building, and pushing through.

UI/UX is more than design tools it’s resilience, patience, and discipline.
That’s what makes the wins feel so good.

How I structure my workflow whenever I start a new project

One thing I’ve learned as a creative is that rushing into design without a clear process usually leads to wasted time and plenty of revisions.

So whenever I start something new, here’s how I approach it:

• Understand the problem, not just the request because design without clarity is decoration.

• Research & Inspiration I check patterns, study competitors, and look for ideas I can adapt, not copy.

• Wireframes first rough drafts help me test flow before making things pixel-perfect.

• High-Fidelity Design once the flow feels right, I polish it into a clean, functional design.

• Feedback & Iteration - I don’t wait until the end to share. I test and refine with feedback.

This keeps me focused, helps clients trust the process, and ensures the final design doesn’t just look good but works.

"Wait, so you're a developer too?"

I get this DM at least once a week. Sometimes twice.

Here's what happened the last time: 

I posted a prototype of an app interface I'd been working on. Smooth transitions, interactive buttons, the whole thing. Within an hour, someone messaged me asking about my "coding stack" and if I freelance as a front-end developer.

I smiled, but also realized this confusion is everywhere.

So let me clear this up once and for all:

Prototyping is not Coding.
When you see me share a clickable, interactive design, I'm not writing a single line of code. I'm using tools like Figma, Protopie, or Framer to simulate how the final product will work. It's smoke and mirrors, really. Beautiful, intentional smoke and mirrors.

Think of it like this: An architect creates a 3D blueprint of a building. You can "walk" through the rooms, see the lighting, feel the space. But they didn't build the actual building. That's the construction team's job.
Same thing here. I design the experience. Developers build it for real.

My prototypes help developers understand what to build. They show stakeholders how it'll feel. They let us test ideas before investing months of actual development time.

But the code that makes it live on your phone or browser? That's a whole different skill set that I deeply respect but don't claim to have mastered.

I’ve seen people get amazing advice, only to do nothing with it.

No action. No consistency. No risk-taking.

And then they wonder why nothing has changed.

The reality is → mentorship isn’t magic.
It’s a partnership.

Your mentor gives direction, but you must move your feet.

Think about it:

•	If you don’t practice what they teach, you stay stuck.

•	If you don’t ask the hard questions, you miss things being clear to you.

•	If you don’t act on feedback, you repeat the same mistakes.

Your mentor is a compass, not an engine.
You are the one who has to do the work.

Why do designers think starving = productive? 😂

Too many of us wear “I forgot to eat today” like a badge of honor. 

But what does it really mean? That you’re so busy designing for others that you forgot to design a healthy life for yourself.

If you’re collecting money from your work, people should see it in your body, your energy, and your presence. 

Not in your shrinking frame or burnout.

As creatives, our productivity doesn’t come from skipping meals. It comes from showing up well-fed, clear-headed, and ready to pour into our craft.

👉 Your design is only as good as the designer behind it.

Take care of yourself first, then take care of the work.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗲 𝗠𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸

I used to think my designs spoke for themselves.

They didn't.

Clients would look at my mockups and say things like "Can we try a different color?" or "I'm not sure about this layout."

And I'd get frustrated because I knew the design worked but I never explained why.

Then I started doing something simple 👇

I began walking clients through my decisions before showing the final design.

Not in a defensive way. Just clearly.

"I made the CTA this size because it needs to compete with distractions on mobile."

"I used this font pairing because your brand needs to feel modern but approachable."

"I placed this section here because that's where user attention naturally flows."

What changed:

→ Fewer random revision requests
→ More trust in my recommendations
→ Clients started saying "I see what you mean" instead of "Can we just try this?

It's not about proving you're right. 

It's about helping clients understand that design isn't guesswork it's intentional.

The moment you stop treating design like decoration and start presenting it like strategy, clients stop seeing you as just "the designer."

They see you as someone who actually gets their business.

My first interview with a founder was a mess.

I was sitting on my cushion chair, holding my phone at this weird angle just to keep my face in frame. I thought if I just showed my face, nobody would notice.

She noticed.

My voice was shaking. I could tell she heard it. And then she stopped mid-conversation and said something I wasn't expecting:
"You don't have to be scared of me. I'm just a human being like you."

Then she told me straight up - next time I go for an interview, sit properly. Face the camera directly. Don't get distracted.
I didn't get the job.

But honestly? That moment taught me more than the interview itself.

I realized I was so busy trying to hide how nervous I was that I made it worse. The weird camera angle. The cushion chair. All of it was me trying to play it cool while actually falling apart.

Now before any call, interview, client meeting, whatever - I set up properly. Not because it makes me look more professional (though it does), but because it makes me feel more ready.

Founders: your signup form is killing your product before users even see it.

"Can we add one more field to the signup?"

This was the third time the founder asked me this in one week.

First it was adding a phone number. Then company size. Then a dropdown for "how did you hear about us?"

I got it. He wanted data. He wanted to understand his users. He wanted everything perfect before they got in.

But I had to tell him something he didn't want to hear:

"If we keep adding to this signup, we're going to lose people before they even see what we built.

He paused. I could tell he was about to push back. So I said:

"Right now, they don't trust us yet. They don't know if this is worth their time. Every extra field is asking them to invest more before they've seen any value.

That landed differently.

We stripped it down to just Email and password. That's it. 

Everything else could wait until they were inside and actually using the product.

The results we got from this was massive Sign-ups. 

And the founder got his data later, when users actually cared enough to give it.

Sometimes protecting the user experience means protecting founders from their own ideas.

I'm trying something different.

Most of my week I'm heads down designing.
Jumping on client calls, Trying to make interfaces that don't confuse people or Figuring out why users ignore what we think is obvious.

I'm a UI/UX designer who cares way too much about user behavior. I just started relearning web3 because the space desperately needs better design.

One thing about design is that trends come and go.

Some inspire me to try new things, others just overcomplicate things.

Here is my take on the designs trends I love vs hate:

✅ Trends I love:

– Playful typography → fonts that carry personality without killing readability.

– 3D depth & textures → not too much, just enough to make designs feel alive and less flat.

– Microinteractions → the small animations that make a button, toggle, or scroll feel natural.

– Bold color contrasts → when designers stop playing safe and use color with confidence.

❌ Trends I don’t love:

– Overuse of gradients → not every background needs to look like a rainbow.

– AI-looking illustrations → they all feel the same, soulless and repetitive.

– Excessive glassmorphism → pretty, but makes everything harder to read.

– Dark mode obsession → even when it doesn’t fit the brand or use case.

At the end of the day, good design isn’t about following trends blindly it’s about choosing the ones that make your work more human, useful, and memorable.

most people you admire get dozens of messages like this every week.

And most of them go unanswered.

Not because they’re rude. 

But because there’s no context. 

No relationship. 

Just a cold pitch.

Here’s what actually works 👇

Stop asking for attention. 

Start giving it.

Before you send that DM, do this:

→ Comment thoughtfully on their posts (not just “Great post!”)

→ Share genuine insights or ask real questions

→ Do this consistently, not just once

→ Engage with what they’re building, not what you need from them

What happens next:

They start noticing your name.

You become familiar.

They see you’re actually paying attention, not just collecting connections.

And when you finally send that DM? It doesn’t feel random anymore.

It feels like a natural next step.

I’ve seen this work countless times. 

People I thought were “unreachable” became genuine connections not because I asked for their time, but because I respected it first.

The real strategy isn’t networking. 

It’s showing up.

Be present. Add value. Be consistent.

Connection happens naturally after that.
