Electric Vehicles | Batteries | Clean Tech

Batteries and clean transportation are going to be central to the decarbonization strategy throughout the world. I have made it my mission to understand both the technology as well as the business aspects of batteries as well as clean transportation modes.

I have worked on innovative technologies and business models in the battery and EV industry, working with internal teams and external stakeholders to bring them to market.

I have worked with every Li-ion battery chemistry as well as supercapacitors. My master's thesis summarizes my 2 years' work on testing and characterizing various energy storage devices. 

I love working at the intersection of technology and business strategy.

Over the weekend, I got into carbon dioxide removal (CDR) because it turns out, we can't avoid 2 deg warming without CDR. Here's what I found out:

🟢We need to deploy 'novel CDR' apart from nature-based CDR like afforestation, reforestation and forest management.

🟢These 'novel CDR' technologies include direct air capture (DAC) and enhanced rock weathering.

🟢These DAC technologies are not very efficient - only 5%. And if they are not powered by renewables, they might actually end up emitting CO2 rather than capturing them.

🟢They are very expensive right now - between $500 to $1200 per ton of carbon dioxide removed. Reports suggest that they need to come down to $100 - $200 for it to be commercially viable. For reference, battery cost reached $130 from $1000 per kWh in 10-12 years. Will DAC reach that scale in the next 10-12 years? I don't know.

🟢DAC has the advantage of being deployed anywhere whereas nature-based CDR is limited to the type of land and local climate.

What are some other things I should know about CDR? What can be done to accelerate DAC deployment? Are there any innovative financing models that can be used to lower the cost? What are some other companies apart from Heirloom and Climeworks that are exploring this technology?
