Everyone thinks they need big titles in their deal.

So reps are taught to always sell above the "power line."

Which is true — you definitely do need to get above the line.

But that line isn't a cut and dry thing that's easy to spot.

Enterprises are more like social networks than hierarchies.

Influence doesn't sit neatly above or below a certain set of titles.

Instead, influence = building a track record and the "social capital" to shape conversations, move deals forward, and create change.

Some things I like to look / listen for here are contacts who:


(1) Previously worked for a direct competitor

(2) Worked with the buying team exec at a previous company

(3) Everyone waits to hear their answer before saying anything, when you throw out a question to a group


Which means the lines will fall differently inside each account.
