Proud to Read

As creator Proud to Read, I strive to connect with parents, children, teachers and all who work with young children: 

- Online, with www.proudtoread.com website and blog, providing a loving insight into the process of reading and drawing attention to the important role of happy, healthy, whole-child, early childhood development in enhancing children's ability to learn to read.
- On the ground, through school visits and reading clubs, showing children that reading is fun and sharing with teachers the many wonderful ways of helping children develop all the skills for learning to read and write.

As an author my duties included developing English Home Language Learner’s Books, Readers, Workbooks, Teacher’s Guides for grades 2 and 3, in accordance with the aims of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) amendments to South African Curriculum introduced in schools from January 2012.

I was the series editor and materials developer, together with authors from Botswana, for English Language course books and Teachers’ Guides -  standards 1,2 and 7 -developed in accordance with the Botswana Department of Education guidelines in 2006.

My responsibilities included teaching and assessment of English Foundation Language courses for levels 1,2 and 3. Each course block was 12 weeks long with tuition on Saturday mornings. The courses were designed for students wishing to improve their English language skills for future studies and/or better work opportunities.

I was commissioned as Series Editor to develop Heinemann Read On Activity Books with Zambian author teams for learners from grades 1 to 4 for literacy hour at the time. The activity books were designed to provide additional activities for the Read On – A Literacy Handbook Teacher’s Guide published by Cambridge University Press. The activity books were developed in way that would ensure they could be adpapted for use in all the official Zambian languages so that literacy skills in one language would reinforce and enhance the skills in other language/languages.

As publisher my key areas of responsibility were to: devise, plan and manage English Language educational materials that complied with the curriculum requirements specified by the Department of Education at the time. My work also entailed conducting market research and conceptualizing new publications, preparing budgets and commissioning new projects as per submission requirements of the Department of Education, working and collaborating with all the author teams, as well as monitoring the manuscript development process for the Outcome Based Curriculum.

My responsibilities included implementation of developmental programmes for children ages 3-4-5, and the Intensive English/TEFL programmes for learners ages 6 to14.  I was also responsible for supervising a full-time teaching assistant, as well as being in charge of the library facilities at the school and providing instruction in library skills.

As creator of Proud to Read my primary focus is to inspire joy of reading and literacy. My most important goal is to highlight the vital role of joyful, early childhood development, that is rich in language, books, stories and play, as a prerequisite for children to learn to read and become proud, confident and independent readers in the early grades at school.
