Today I head off to a lonely cabin in the woods.  
 
Back in January, I was a guest on the Unplugged pod.  
 
We spoke all things digital detox and benefits of nature on your physical and mental health.  
 
Over the next three days i'll get to experience it myself.  
 
No phone, no wifi... 
Just me, my partner and little Luna. 
 
If you need me don't call!  😇 


I locked my phone away in this box for 3 nights.  
 
I speculated about what would happen in my last few posts.. 
 
Here's how it really went: 
 
🌳 I noticed myself reaching for my phone 3 times. Much less than I thought I would. Every time it was when my partner left the cabin (i.e. to get firewood), so I'm proud of that. 
 
🌳 I thought I would be sad if it rained because I'd want to go for more walks. Instead it was a nice excuse to play more scrabble (and win). 
 
🌳 I felt liberated knowing that nothing from the outside world could impact how I was feeling. No urgent emails, no heartbreaking news stories, nothing. 
 
🌳 Checking social media was definitely the most stressful part of turning my phone back on. Surprisingly, I only had one text (thanks mom). 
 
So here are some thoughts about social media, as a content creator who is constantly trying to find the right balance: 
 
With millions of people creating content every single day across hundreds of platforms, you'll never catch up with the internet. Don't bother trying to play catch up I've you've had a busy day of meetings, or have been away from your phone. Use that time to re charge instead. 
 
The way i'm approaching it now is that the content that needs to find me will find me, I don't have to go looking for it. This helps with the Doomscrolling. I'll just flick through a few posts and then put my phone down.

In an industry where everything is about self improvement, I just want to say this: 
 
There's a thin line between overly complicated morning routines, strict health 'protocols', biohacking and orthorexia. 
 
An obsession with healthy eating can morph into a restrictive lifestyle, often mistaken as dedication and discipline.  
 
This is orthorexia.  
 
Hidden behind cool sounding trends like 'self-optimising' and 'biohacking' we may inadvertently fall into a trap of self-destruction rather than self-improvement. 
 
Staying healthy is vital. Taking care of your mind and body is a good thing, but balance is key. As soon as something becomes obsessive you're down a dangerous path. 
 
Take care + be mindful 🌸

Finally, neuroscientists have uncovered the hallmark of a 'female brain'. 
 
For many years we've heard that women have smaller brains, are less rational and more emotional... 
 
BUT in a shocking new development, women do actually have something men don't. 
 
In a groundbreaking study of 20,000 brains researchers found a brain circuit found to be exclusive to females. 
 
If you look at the image attached, the pink marks showcase whats now known as the 'NAM' circuit. 
 
Researchers speculate that this has developed as an evolutionary mechanism to aid in mating selection. 
 
Here's what it does: 
▶️ Similarly to the stress response, it triggers a flood of hormones, like adrenaline and cortisol. 
▶️ Elevates heart rate, increases blood pressure, boost your energy and:  
▶️ Shuts down reproductive apparatus. 
 
It's also only triggered under one condition, in response to hearing a man say "Not All Men". 
 
Oh and they also found specialised mirror neurons: This explains our affinity towards the colour pink!!

Sleep is a key component of mental health + fitness. 
 
Here are some sleep hacks to try this week: 
 
💙	Try 4-7-8 breathing before going to sleep. 
💙	Stick to a strict sleep schedule all week (even weekends) mine is 10:30 PM bedtime 7:30 AM wake up. 
💙	Find out what your Chronotype is and shift your week to suit your ideal cycle timings. 
 
Note: Women might require 1-2 more hours of sleep compared to men, and an extra hour depending on the time of month!

Day 1 of Digital Detox 
 
(Don't worry, I'm sticking to the rules, this is an automated message) 😉 
 
By now I would have been without a phone nearly 16 hours. 
 
Here's what might be happening (according to previous observational research) 
 
-> The amount of eye contact between me + my partner might have increased  
 
-> My posture might be better because i'm not hunched over looking at my phone or laptop. 
 
->Conversations might be more engaging because i'm not distracted. I might even remember details of our conversations better because i'm fully present with my partner.  
 
 
I will be back at the end of the week to confirm or deny 😆 
 
 
What other things do you speculate might be happening? Withdrawals? Phantom phone syndrome?

Investing in Mental Health Tech? 
 
There's been a clear downward trend in VC Funding for Digital Health solutions, and the rise of AI is surely shifting the Mental Digital Health landscape. 
 
If you're looking to invest in Mental Health Startups... 
 
Here's what you should look out for: 
 
 
▶️ If it is a for profit company, consider scalability. Can the product effortlessly grow without sacrificing its quality? 
 
▶️ Ratio of mental health professionals involved. Are they just board members or do they have an active role? 
 
▶️ Scrutinise if therapists are licensed and if the app is registered as a medical product if required. 
 
▶️ Retention rates. The industry average for 30 day retention hovers around 3%. Calm and Headspace are around 8%. Be suspicious of any figures significantly higher. 
 
▶️ Take a closer look at user acquisition strategies too. Is the company preying on vulnerable individuals? Is it using tactics like cold calls? 
 
▶️ Do the CEO and company leaders embody the products mission + values? What are their beliefs around mental health and how do they encourage a healthy workplace for their employees? 
 
▶️ Staff retention is also telling. Understanding why people are leaving gives you valuable insights to whats going on BTS. 
 
▶️ Personalised support is a hot topic with the rise in AI. Are they claiming human personalised interaction but in reality using chatbots to interact with users? Are they shifting from human to robot without informing customers? Run! 
 
▶️ Check compliance and security measures. With any health product, privacy should be paramount. Where is user information stored and who has access to it? 
 
▶️ Lastly, what's the company's internal approach to mental health? Is there a dedicated HR department?

Is it sleep deprivation or ADHD? 
 
Did you know there's a profound connection between ADHD and sleep? 
 
ADHD is more than just inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It can disrupt many aspects of life.  
 
Particularly striking, however, is the effect it can have on sleep patterns. 
 
💤 Around 25% to 50% of ADHD children also grapple with sleep-related issues, ranging from insomnia to other sleep disorders. 
 
As the child ages, sleep issues intensify, which suggests that early childhood sleep disturbances can potentially act as a sign for ADHD down the line. 
 
Additionally, the type of ADHD also plays a role in sleep issues: 
 
❗Predominantly inattentive symptoms results in delayed bedtimes, while with hyperactive-impulsive symptoms, insomnia is more common. 
 
And the complications don't stop there.  
 
Many symptoms of ADHD are strikingly similar to sleep deprivation symptoms: 
 
-> Forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, fatigue manifesting as hyperactivity—sounds familiar, doesn't it? 👋 
 
Given these overlaps, it's crucial to screen for sleep problems before medicating for ADHD—it’s not always clear whether the symptoms are due solely to ADHD or lack of sleep.

Many of us face moments of stress or anxiety during our day, and if you're looking for a quick, accessible remedy....  
 
Consider making a cup of tea 🍵 
 
It sounds simple, and maybe a little silly. 
 
But it's not just about the drink, it's about the overall experience that can help to soothe your anxiety, if done mindfully. 
 
⬇️ 
 
Find a quiet, comfortable spot in your home. It could be where you usually meditate, or even your living room.  
 
The key is to be in a place that feels relaxing. 
 
If your anxiety is related to your work, get out of your home office! 
 
Now, for the mindful bit... engage all of your senses as you take a moment out of your day to drink your tea. 
 
👐 Notice the warmth of the cup in your hands.  
 
👁️ Look at the light reflecting on the surface. Notice the colour of the liquid. 
 
👃Take a deep breath in, taking in the aroma of the tea.  
 
👂Listen to the sound of the liquid moving in the cup.  
 
👄And finally, taste it.  
 
Take the time to really taste and enjoy every sip. 
 
If your anxiety surfaces, acknowledge it.  
 
Then, redirect your attention back to the tea and the comfort it brings. 
 
While you're in this calm space, think of three things you appreciate in that moment.  
 
It could be the fact that you're able to take this time for yourself, the taste of the tea, or something else in your immediate surroundings. 
 
If you have the emotional capacity to do so, extend this moment of gratitude to other aspects of your life.  
 
✨ Consider your health, your fulfilling job or the relationships that enrich your life. 
 
Making a cup of tea becomes an exercise in awareness and gratitude, which can help to bring you peace and reduce anxiety.  
 
So, why not put the kettle on?🍵

3D printed... brain tissue?? 
 
My little brother has been playing around with his new 3D printer. Naturally, I asked him to print a model of the brain for me (he ignored me went with a sword instead). 
 
Thankfully we have scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.. 
 
They've developed the first-ever 3D-printed brain tissue that mimics the growth and function of typical brain tissue. 
 
Happy 👨‍🔬Science Sunday👩‍🔬 everyone! 
 
Let's dive into this suuuper exciting research and how it was conducted: 
 
🖨️ The Printing Process 
-> Unlike traditional 3D-printing methods, which stack layers vertically, the researchers opted for a horizontal approach. They embedded brain cells (neurons derived from induced pluripotent stem cells) into a softer "bio-ink" gel.  
 
This gel provided the structural support necessary for tissue formation while allowing neurons to grow and interact with each other. 
 
🔬 Results 
-> The printed brain tissue demonstrated remarkable functionality. Neurons formed connections within and across layers, resembling the intricate networks found in human brains.  
 
These neurons communicated, sent signals, and interacted with one another through neurotransmitters, mirroring the complexities of the human brain. 
 
BUT WHY!?  
-> This innovative printing technique offers unparalleled precision, which enables scientists to control the types and arrangement of cells within the tissue.  
 
-> It could be used to study a wide range of neurological conditions, test drug candidates, and observe brain development in real-time. 
 
-> What's even more exciting is that this technique doesn't require specialised equipment or complex culturing methods, making it accessible to many labs. 
 
-> This approach has the potential to revolutionise our understanding of neurological disorders and pave the way for innovative treatments. 
 
-> The team's achievement holds promise for the treatment of various neurological disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.  
 
-> By creating a model that closely resembles human brain tissue, scientists can gain invaluable insights into brain function and pathology. 🎉🧬

Is venting a valid way to deal with your frustration? 
 
I'm sure there will be a few different opinions, but let's see what the research says.

Today we're challenging the conventional wisdom that expressing anger is a valid way to regulate emotions. 
 
🔬 The team from the University of Wisconsin analysed over 150 studies involving more than 10,000 participants.  
 
They sought to understand the most effective strategies for managing anger and aggression.  
 
 
📊 The analysis revealed that arousal-decreasing activities like deep breathing, relaxation, and meditation effectively reduced anger across various settings and populations.  
 
🧘 Interestingly, techniques such as yoga, which can be arousing, still had a calming effect on anger. 
 
What does this mean?  
-> Contrary to popular belief, venting anger does not alleviate rage. 
-> Arousal-reducing techniques work best. 
-> Effective anger management techniques are accessible and affordable: breathing, meditating etc. 
->  Its important to adopt evidence-based strategies for emotional regulation. 
 
So my advice to you today: Breathe, don't vent!

🤳 I hope my brain is able to relax and be present, rather than be anxious that I'm missing an important email. 
💤 I hope I have the best sleep ever tonight.
