After my parents divorced, I lived with my father and I felt that I never received the love or affection I craved from my mother, which meant my childhood was marked by emotional hurt. I took flying lessons and learned to fly a small plane... before I could drive! It felt amazing! Every time I took off into the sky I felt truly free, as though I left all my worries behind on the ground. Of course, those worries would still be there waiting for me again when I landed. I discovered the early Eighties club scene and the drug of choice at the time, which was heroin. When I first snorted the heroin, I stopped feeling, the pain simply went away. That way of coping simply wasn't sustainable, and soon I found myself in rehab, which meant moving to England as there were no facilities like that in my own country. I updated my commercial pilot's license and got my first job with an airline in the UK. This was the start of a career that spanned almost thirty years. In a routine pilot's medical examination, a scan revealed a blockage in my heart, which would require an aortic valve replacement, and that meant my licence to fly was immediately revoked. I would never be allowed to fly again. I cannot tell you how hard that news knocked me down. I hit rock bottom. Not only my career and my income, but also my identity. Both were all snatched away from me in an instant. I knew intuitively that ultimately my healing was down to me, I had to heal my heart, not only physically, but emotionally as well!
