- Helped the banking division move from a project operating model to a product centric one
- Established and led a Product Community of Practice with over 100 product managers
- Implemented OKRs, outcome thinking and 'bets' into their ways of working
- Introduced hypothesis driven development and product discovery

Building a leading Digital Bank at Macquarie (with UST Global) 

ustwo

ustwo is an industry leading product company with the mission to “build products which make a meaningful impact in the world.” 

Their clients include the likes of Netflix, AirBnB and Google. 

Whilst at ustwo I was a Product Manager and Enterprise Coach. I worked with clients such as Caltex, ABC, Visa, amongst others - partnering with CPOs, GM or Head of Product levels, I played a key leadership role on the client side. 

Most notably I spent most of my time at ABC partnering with their Chief Digital Officer and Head of Group Product to transform the ABC to a Product-Led company in response to the 20% YoY decline in broadcast consumption. 

Whilst at ABC I worked directly on their news Product Portfolio to bring their new ABC Life product to market and to reposition their mobile app to achieve an increase in daily active users by 2%.

During my time at ustwo: 
- I brought 3 Greenfield 0-1 product to market
- Sunsetted products
- I repositioning and pivoted a mature product
- Playing interim product leadership roles as both Head of Product and Group PM for clients
- and was involved in half a dozen discovery efforts to validate early idea concepts
- I also helped grow the Sydney studio from 20 people to a peak of 50 employees.

ustwo had a relatively small presence here in Sydney, this meant that my role was versatile like with most startups I wore many hats. From Product Manager, Head of Product, Delivery Lead, People Manager, Business Development and Client Relationship Manager.

Product Manager & Enterprise Coach 

Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)

Partnered with the Chief Digital Officer and working side-by-side the Head of Group Product to transform the ABC to a digital first, Product-Led company in response to the 20% YoY decline in broadcast consumption.

- Defined the new Digital Product Portfolio Strategy 
- Re-organised the organisation into 24 end-to-end product teams, bringing people editors, content makers etc together
- Established 4 product groups
- Established a Product practice from the ground up, including hiring a Head of Group Product, a team of Group Product Managers, Product Managers, Product Designers and Product Coaches to assist with capability uplift
- Formed a strategic Product Discovery Team that looked into moonshot bets.

As part of leading the shift to products. I worked directly on their News Product Group as an avenue to lead-by-example and demonstrate what 'good' looks like to the business. 

During my time leading the News Product Portfolio I: 
- Brought their brand new ABC Life product to market
- Repositioned their mobile app to achieve an increase in daily active users by 2%

Through ustwo I led a 6 month engagement with Caltex to build out their digital product capability and establish their digital innovation lab. 

- Grew from 5 people to 5x product teams 
- Establish an innovation lab, called C-Lab in the Sydney Startup Hub
- launched of two greenfield products, their FuelPay app which allows users to pay for fuel with their phones without having to leave their car, as well as the Foodary app which allows for preorder of drinks and food at selected foodary sites. 
- Launched a Beta for number plate recognition product as a bet to assess feasibility of a completely automated fuel payment experience utilising number plate recognition software.

Established Caltex Innovation Lab in Sydney Startup Hub (with ustwo)

First role at AMP was to lead defining and brining a greenfield innovative product called Bett3r. A smart banking app it helps you achieve your financial goals by helping you understand your finances and automatically move money around three bank accounts for Pay, Spend and Save. One amazing, albeit unintended, outcome was that it was so successful at helping its users live within their means that some reported cancelling their credit cards after ~2-3months of use. 

After successfully shipping the greenfield product i was moved along with it, into the digital department where I was the coach for the Director of Digital and Head of Digital Product and help coach across the 8x cross-functional teams. 

I also spend time coaching the c-suite and director level, partnering with the Chief Information Officer to coach them on agile and Human Centred Design. The goal was to better equip the leaders with how they might be able to display behaviours that will promote a culture that is more conducive to an innovative and adaptive culture. This was based in everyday micro-habits that they could do to lead by example and cultivate cultural change.

Product discovery (in some companies) have become a loaded term that execs are allergic to.

And not because they don't see value in it.

No exaggeration but I was sitting in a meeting earlier today and when the team suggested doing discovery, the exec jumped in and said...

Exec: “I wouldn’t go so far as discovery… I think it’s just spending a bit of time validating the problem statement and what the solution might be and if it adds value or not.”

The irony is they did a great job explaining what discovery is but clearly that's not what they're thinking when they hear the word.

You say “discovery” and they hear “6 months of research and analysis” when really you mean a couple of days.

I've found in a lot of cases, getting buy-in for discovery is simply resetting this understanding and rebuilding trust.

It's why I'm an advocate for time-boxing discovery. Especially when discovery cycles are long which is often the case when this scenario happens.

"What are the habits of highly effective Product Leaders?"

This was the question a Head of Product asked in our 1:1 coaching session yesterday and here's my brain dump (7 habits)👇

And I know I've probably missed some key things - let me know what they are!


1. They're still a PM

The best product leaders see their role as the same as their PM's just with greater breadth (and a few additional responsibilities).

You go from owning a product to a product portfolio.
You go from a product team, to a team of teams.

But the basics remain.

They still talk to customers.
They look at the data regularly.
They collaborate with stakeholders.
They still need to size and prioritise opportunities.
They work daily with their engineering and design peers.
They still do discovery (albeit looking a bit different than as a PM).
They need to set a direction (strategy) and constantly communicate and align the org to it.
etc...


2. Your team = the product

Whilst still being a PM, effective product leaders also apply their product craft to their team.

They spend time discovering what is happening: 
- what's working?
- what's not working?
- what pain points and opportunities are the team facing?

They also test their assumptions against the above. 

They run experiments. 

It just looks different. Like testing new practices, tools, ways of working, etc things like that and not necessarily your usual AB or clickable-prototype test.

(p.s. when your product leader reaches out, he/she might be interviewing you, testing a hypothesis, etc you might just not realise it. I do this all the time as a coach 😉)


3. Stay close to the work

In order to be effective in 1 and 2 you need to stay close to the work.

Of course this doesn't mean you know everything and you'll never know more about a space than the people working in that space.

But you need to be close enough to:
- ask the right questions to strengthen ALL decisions, not just yours
- challenge and nudge teams in the right direction
- identify when teams might be drifting
- identify gaps and where to coach
- identify and remove blockers


4. Default to coaching

Another very nuanced habit is being in 'coach' mode rather than 'manager' mode.

Here's an example.

When someone says something you don't agree with, or think is wrong - what do you do?

a) correct them
b) or ask "can you tell me more about..."

Effective product leaders default to b) and generally sit in a more coaching and questioning stance.

That's not to say there aren't times where you need to be direct.

But defaulting to asking questions over telling does a few things:
↳ gets more context on the table (never know some of that might be useful).
↳ unpacks the persons thinking - how did they land on this conclusion
↳ doesn’t come across as corrective/combative (be mindful of the power dynamics)
↳ ‘teaches them to fish’
