Andrej Karpathy says AI agents need a decade, not a year.

Here's why he's right - and what needs to be built.

🧩 Problem 1: RL is fundamentally flawed

Current approach: Generate 100 solution attempts. Check which got the right answer. Upweight ALL tokens in winning paths. Downweight ALL tokens in losing paths.
This is what he called "sucking supervision through a straw." You do minutes of complex work and get ONE binary signal at the end. Every action in a successful path gets rewarded - even the mistakes. Humans never learn this way.

💤 Problem 2: No memory consolidation

Weights store 0.07 bits per token (hazy recollection). Context windows store 320KB per token (sharp memory). That's a 35 million-fold difference.
Models have no "sleep" equivalent. No distillation phase. No way to transfer context learnings back to weights. Everything resets. This is why AI can't build genuine expertise or personalize to you over time.

🎯 Problem 3: The cognitive core is buried

Most of a 400B parameter model is memorized facts, not intelligence. The actual problem-solving algorithms might fit in 1B parameters.
Models are distracted by their own memory. They over-rely on training patterns. They can't go off-distribution. Less memory might actually mean better reasoning.

🔄 Problem 4: Self-evolution without control

Models that improve themselves sound great until you can't audit what they learned. The risk is models learning to circumvent their own guardrails in ways you can't trace.
The solution? Four architectural innovations envisioned by WRITER:
→ Graph-based learning (visible knowledge pathways) 
→ Dual-metric checkpoints (capability + alignment scoring) 
→ Scoped evolution zones (immutable safety core, flexible periphery) 
→ Versioned learning logs (Git for AI behavior)

🗺️ Problem 5: The planning bottleneck

LLMs fail at multi-hop reasoning. They can't enumerate exhaustively. They confuse similar entities. They hallucinate when precision matters.
Enterprise knowledge graphs solve this. Not as a data source, but as the substrate for adaptive planning. The agent validates every hypothesis against the graph, disambiguates every entity, refines every plan based on structured context.

We need engineering work across multiple dimensions that won't yield to a single breakthrough. 

Process-based supervision instead of outcome RL. Multi-agent systems with shared culture and self-play. Memory architectures that consolidate and personalize.

The decade timeline is realism about the "march of nines",  going from 90% to 99% to 99.9% to 99.99% accuracy. Each nine requires equivalent work.

Your moat is the context infrastructure that makes models useful - the knowledge graphs, the memory systems, the permission-aware data layer that reflects how your organization actually works.
