I am the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations. Since taking office in January 2017, my focus has been to mobilize people and push forward action to address the climate emergency, advance gender equality, and achieve reforms to enhance the UN's efforts to secure peace, sustainable development and human rights.

Throughout my life, I have centered my efforts on ensuring human dignity for all; from my early work as a teacher in the outskirts of Lisbon to the years I spent as Prime Minister of Portugal, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and now Secretary-General.

I was born in Lisbon in 1949 and graduated from the Instituto Superior Técnico with a degree in engineering.

I'm deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Jane Goodall, our dear Messenger of Peace.

She is leaving an extraordinary legacy for humanity and our planet.

I'm grateful for her lifelong environmental protection efforts and her strong support for the United Nations.

Progress on gender equality has been slow and uneven.

In every region, every country, every community, women and girls are fighting for their rights: demanding freedoms, combatting abusive practices, rallying for legal protections, and organising to take their rightful place at the table in decision-making and peace processes.

Let's be clear: equal rights and opportunities are not partisan issues. Women’s participation in decision-making is not a gift, it is a right.

Leaders must speak out, act and deliver the equality our world so sorely needs.

The United Nations was created as a place where all nations - large and small - can come together to solve problems that no country can solve alone.
From eradicating smallpox to healing the ozone layer to preventing a third world war, over the last 80 years, the UN has led the way to some of humanity’s greatest triumphs.

At a time when the principles of the Organization are under assault as never before, we must not only defend the UN, but strengthen it, in order to renew the foundations of international cooperation, and to ensure we can deliver for people everywhere.

The only way forward is together.

Let us rise to this moment with clarity, courage, and conviction.

Let us realize the promise of peace.

Yet, poverty, war, climate disasters and barriers continue to hinder progress.
We need to #ActNow to empower all women and girls and achieve true equality in our societies.

Eighty years ago, in a world scorched by World War II, leaders made a choice: 

Cooperation over chaos, law over lawlessness, peace over conflict. That choice gave birth to the United Nations.

Eighty years on, we confront a choice again: What kind of world do we choose to build together?

At the UN General Assembly I told world leaders:

We must choose peace rooted in international law.
We must choose human dignity and human rights.
We must choose climate justice.
We must choose to put technology at the service of humanity.
And we must choose to strengthen the UN for the 21st century.

Now is the time to choose, and it is not enough to know what the right choices are, we must make them.

Soon, world leaders will gather here in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, and there is much at stake: Peace. Climate. Innovation. Equality. Development.

This is an opportunity we cannot miss.

I will press leaders to speak directly with each other to bridge divides, get serious and deliver.

Let this be a week of solutions.

My message to world leaders at the UN General Assembly:

No matter the challenge, no matter the obstacle, no matter the hour, we must - and we will - overcome.

Because in a world of many choices, there is one choice we must never make: The choice to give up.

We must never give up. That is my promise to you. For peace. For dignity. For justice. For humanity. For the world we know is possible when we work as one.

I will never, ever give up.

The United Nations is a symbol of peace and a beacon of hope.

Born out of the ashes of the Second World War, the UN was the result of a global commitment to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.”

In times of uncertainty and unpredictability – the United Nations has never been more needed. An essential one-of-a-kind meeting ground to advance peace, sustainable development and human rights. A platform where voices of people everywhere can be heard.

Soon, global leaders will be gathering here for the UN General Assembly to drive forward solutions for a better future and to translate words into action for the most vulnerable.

Now is the time to demonstrate that multilateralism is the only pathway to a better future for all.

International cooperation is not naiveté, it is hard-headed pragmatism.

In a world where threats leap borders, isolation is an illusion. No country can stop a pandemic alone. No army can halt rising temperatures. No algorithm can rebuild trust once it is broken.

Therefore I asked global leaders at the UN General Assembly to make the choice – an active choice -to reaffirm the imperative of international law, reassert the centrality of multilateralism, reinforce justice and human rights, and to recommit to the principles that gave rise to the United Nations.

Democracy is powered by the will of the people – by their voices, their choices, and their participation.

It thrives when the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all are upheld, especially the most vulnerable. A democracy that excludes is no democracy at all.

To those who seek to discredit or undermine democracy, I say this: I lived under a dictatorship. And, along with many others, I helped rebuild democracy in Portugal. I know the difference.

At a time when democracy and the rule of law are under assault from disinformation, division, and shrinking civic space, let us honour the courage of people everywhere who are shaping their societies through dialogue, participation, and trust.

The United Nations itself is a forum for dialogue, rooted in the opening words of our Charter, “We the peoples”, – a powerful reminder that our legitimacy and purpose derive from those we serve.

On this #DemocracyDay, let’s reaffirm democracy as a force for dignity, inclusion, and peace – and work together to ensure it delivers for all.

In these challenging times, people demand answers & action.

The UN General Assembly – an opportunity we cannot miss

Our warring world is crying out for peace.

Around the world lives are being ripped apart, childhoods extinguished, and basic human dignity discarded, amidst the cruelty and degradations of war.
We are seeing an explosion of conflict. International law flouted. And record numbers of people fleeing their homes.

All they want is peace.

Peace is everyone’s business. We must silence the guns. End the suffering. Build bridges. And create stability and prosperity.

Where we have peace, we have hope.

Peace cannot wait.

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a distant horizon. It is here, transforming daily life, the information space, and the global economy at breathtaking speed.

The question is whether we will govern this transformation together, or let it govern us.

As I told world leaders at the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, the trajectory of Artificial Intelligence will depend on our readiness to listen, to adapt, and to cooperate, across borders and disciplines.

We must build safe, secure and trustworthy AI systems and a future of AI by humanity, with humanity and for humanity.

Forty years ago, nations came together to take the first step in protecting the ozone layer – guided by science, united in action.

The Vienna Convention and its Montreal Protocol became a landmark of multilateral success. Today, the ozone layer is healing.

Scientists are sounding the alarm once again. We are hurtling towards pushing global temperatures 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels, with devastating consequences.

Every fraction of a degree matters. Every action counts.

On this World Ozone Day, let’s recommit to preserving our ozone layer and to protecting people and planet for generations to come.

Next week, every country will be here in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

We are gathering in turbulent times, but this is an opportunity we cannot miss.
UN week offers every possibility for dialogue and mediation. Every opportunity for forging solutions. Leaders must work with each other to bridge divides, reduce risks and deliver.

People are demanding answers and action.

Actions that match the gravity of the challenges our world faces.
Actions that meet the expectations of all those on the outside looking in.

Let this be a week of solutions.

Young people are drivers of change. They are leading on climate action, digital innovation, local solutions, and human rights.

Yet too often, they are shut out of decisions that shape their lives and face barriers to education, decent work, health services, and political participation.

I asked world leaders at #UNGA to spare no effort to make young people equal partners and decision-makers as we accelerate our work to realize the Sustainable Development Goals.

By relying on their ideas, energy, and leadership a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world is within reach.
