Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

I'm from the generation that grew up using Yahoo for everything — web search, email, chat. It felt like Yahoo was invincible. Until it wasn't. 

We rely on Google today — a search engine so dominant, it's become a verb.

But what happens when people say "Google it" less and less? When they start saying "Ask ChatGPT" as a reflex? 

In my own social circles, I've seen people increasingly turn to LLMs — be it ChatGPT or Gemini Or Perplexity — for anything and everything, including product discovery. Generative AI is nowhere close to being a huge competitor to Google search yet but it has definitely made a dent in a very short span of time. In June 2025, AI search traffic accounted for 7.82% of search traffic, globally, as per Wix Studio. 

As marketers, this presents to us an opportunity to tap into where our audiences are. When they search for your company, what shows up? Is your product being recommended by ChatGPT?

The key to this is SEO. Or rather, GEO and AEO. 'Generative Engine Optimization' and 'Answer Engine Optimization' are two new terms I learnt in a webinar on 'Cracking AI: Optimize your business in the era of smart search'.
