But he often describes his childhood as a "living hell."

He was living in his car in Atlanta.

Sleeping in his Geo Metro outside a pay-by-the-week hotel full of crackheads.

Waking up every morning to exhaust fumes filling his "room."

Tyler Perry had invested his life savings, $12,000, into his first play.

Only 30 people showed up.
He expected 1,200.

His rent, car payment, everything was tied up in that production.

The play failed.
So he tried again the next year.
It failed.
And again. Failed.

For 6 straight years, Tyler Perry staged the same play.

For 6 straight years, it bombed.

His mother begged him to get a "real job."

Arguably more skilled.

But he spent 20 years perfecting his craft while Canelo spent 20 years perfecting his brand.

Crawford made himself the best fighter in the room.

Canelo made himself the reason Netflix writes $150 million checks.

One focused on being skilled. 
The other focused on being essential.

Your personal brand is NOT just about what you can do.

See, it's also about what you represent, who you serve and why people should care.

Crawford represents boxing excellence.

Canelo represents cultural pride, family tradition and national identity.

Guess which message sells more pay-per-views?

Crawford will go down as one of the greatest technical boxers in history.

His record is flawless.
His legacy secure.

But let's be honest:

Legacy doesn't always pay for generational wealth.

Brand does.

Crawford said the legacy outweighs the money, and maybe he's right about his peace of mind.

But what about the money?

Skills pay bills.
Brands pay empires.

Your resume might be perfect, but if you're not building an audience, you're building somebody else's fortune.

The most talented person rarely gets the biggest paycheck.

The most indispensable person does.

She grabbed scissors to cut the feet off her pantyhose.

That was back in her Atlanta apartment.

She was 27, selling fax machines door-to-door, and tired of looking lumpy in white pants.

Every hosiery company she pitched laughed her out of the room.

"You're not a businessman," they said. 

"You don't understand manufacturing."

"This will never work."

For two years, Sara Blakely heard "no" 100 times.

Her own father told her to get serious about her career.

Friends suggested she move on to "realistic" goals.

But Sara kept going.

She spent $5,000 of her savings.

Found a small mill owner in North Carolina willing to listen.

Convinced Neiman Marcus to give her a chance.

When people say AI can't understand cultural nuance.

The reality boils down to this:

The best innovations come from people who aren't supposed to be innovators.

Sara wasn't a textile expert.

Steve Jobs wasn't an engineer.

Oprah wasn't born into media royalty.
