Being an assessor for the Chartered Engineer program CEng with KIVI - Koninklijk Instituut Van Ingenieurs in The Netherlands, means I need to keep myself updated regularly as well.

I am at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University today, for a Conference on #Sustainability and #LivingWage.

For our global challenges, I believe that we need to REVERSE the problem, not just REDUCE the effects.

Every year, I try to strike something off my #BucketList.

Today, after so many years .. I visited the area where my favourite cheese comes from. I walked over 15,000 steps .. up and down the hills. Asked questions, learnt so much more than "online sesrches" .. I got to see, smell and taste the huge diversity within this one type of cheese.

Yes this is not #FB, so why am I sharing this?  Simply because I listened all day with my engineering mindset.

The cheese production is a very complex process, where the caves in the mountains helped stablize the conditions for the bacteria fungus to grow (Six Sigma). And the process from raw milk to finished blue cheese has been continuously improved over decades by experience (and experimenting) .. mindset of #ContinuousImprovement and #Quality.

Over the years, they expanded their range, which is #PortfolioDiversification .. and the more questions I asked, the more I got 'pulled' into more discussions, and the more I saw patterns in other industries .. wow.

What will you strike off your list this year? Do share .. it only needs to be important to you 👍

No point having many connections .. if you are not really CONNECTED, and the only way to do this is simply by :
- making the effort 
- put aside some time
- try to meet face-to-face (if possible)
- listen without 'waiting to reply'

Currently studying at EAISI – Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute, I often encounter the misconception that my focus is on using #GenAI platforms like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or Google to develop applications for mobile phones or laptops. 

In reality, my goal is to leverage data to create #AI models, which can be categorized into three distinct types of analysis.

#TotalCostofOwnership (TCO), is something we calculate everyday, at work (business case), and also at home (long-term bills).

Recently, I came across this statement at a highway stopover. Wow .. I was pleased to see at least 50% #Cost savings on my road trip.

Then I asked myself .. Cost Savings, but from whose perspective ?

a) #customer pays less for the energy, great. But how much does the EV car cost ? And there is not much value for second-hand, so how does this work out on the long run ?

b) #company must make a profit, else they close down, correct ? Therefore, they will utilize whatever resources and pass the cost on to the customer, to generate a profit to survive and grow. Else why bother, correct ?

But there is ONE more stakeholder, we seem to forget in this equation.

Who is looking out for the TCO for the #planet ?
Who is looking into reversing this trend, and not not slowing it down ?
Who is looking into growing our polar ice caps ?

So please .. take a step back, when possible from our busy schedules .. and ask the right question. As we are running out of planet, and we seem to be busy 'fire-fighting' even at a global level .. why ?

This evening, I attended the annual reception at KIVI - Koninklijk Instituut Van Ingenieurs, the Royal Institute of Engineers in the Netherlands. The opening speech provided insights from last year and looked ahead to the new year, 2026. Following that, we had the opportunity to meet and greet fellow members.

I engaged in meaningful discussions with two intriguing engineers, which inspired this post.

(1) An ex-professor from Delft University of Technology recounted how, in the 80s, they developed a small-scale model for producing bio-fuel, with the only 'waste' being bio-fertilizer. The plan was to seek a grant for a larger-scale project suitable for industrial use. Unfortunately, this initiative faltered as investors prioritized #ROI, leading them to overlook this innovative project in favor of others that promised quicker profits. I could still feel his lingering disappointment, till this evening 😢. A huge wasted opportunity for the #Planet.

(2) I also spoke with a director from a government body responsible for regulating various norms in the Netherlands, including air and water quality, as well as building foundations. He shared an enlightening perspective regarding vacuum cleaners. I learned that if a vacuum cleaner requires 750w of power to function effectively, there’s no need for models boasting 1500w or even 2000w. Some manufacturers use higher wattage as a marketing tactic to claim their products are the most powerful. However, this is misleading. He proudly noted that legislation now mandates all vacuum cleaners in the EU to have a maximum power rating of 900w, which is a positive step for the #Planet in reducing unnecessary electricity consumption.

I am grateful for the opportunity to attend this event, where I met fascinating individuals, asked questions, and gained valuable insights.
