The Teacher's Guide to Changing Careers

I feel compelled to post about the WNBA pay gap and what can ACTUALLY fix the issue.  This may shock you bc I am ALL ABOUT equal pay - except I get it when it comes to the WNBA.  For most of us, our reference point to talk about equal pay is our jobs.  YES companies should pay men and women equal for the same job. They had the budget to hire, it should be the same for a comparable role, workload, and skillset. 

BUT the WNBA is different.  Why did Clark and Reese get such low salaries ($73k)?  Because the money is not there in the first place. Teams get money in two ways:  ticket sales and ad revenue. 

The WNBA has always been subsidized by the NBA. Although the WNBA fan base is very loyal, its is dismal compared to other areas/teams/markets. Back in the late 90's it was me with my cream and orange basketball and about 18 other people who cared (my parents and the rest of my 5th grade basketball team) 🙃 

In order for the WNBA to pay its athletes more, it needs to make more.  How can that happen?  WATCH AND ATTEND MORE GAMES PEOPLE! We don't need posts of injustice, we need you to show up! 

The WNBA tv contract through 2025 is only worth $60M.  The NBAs?  $2.6 BILLION.  Yes, the B word. 

There is hope.  Keep watching!! Ensure the WNBA can hit their goal to double the new tv contract value next year by making is easy for companies to want to buy ads and continuing to up viewership!  

Buy tickets and go to games.  The Bay Area expansion team (hasn't been a new team since 2008) has already sold more than 6,000 season ticket spots and they don't play until 2025.  The LV Aces sold out of season ticket spots for the 2024 season.  That has never happened in the history of the WNBA. 

The 2024 NCAA MM viewership was amazing. And yes, I'm aware the women couldn't even call it MM until a few years ago. It hasn't been perfect, but admiring the issues of past will not generate forward progress.
