10 years ago, I lived in a 12sq meter room within a 4-bed flat share in Dublin. I was a 23 year old analyst at BNY Mellon earning €2,100.

It was my first real job and I felt like a fraud. I had no idea what I was doing. I was simply mirroring what my colleagues were doing. 

Yet my boss seemed satisfied.

And the salary still came.

To me, that €2,100 salary felt huge.

I grew up being told that an Xbox is too expensive and I can’t have it. I grew up frugal. I had a scarcity mindset.

When that first salary arrived, I couldn’t believe. It was so much money. They really pay me this much money just to follow instructions? I was pretty frugal and spent only on rent and Tesco groceries. I’ve made my budget and it turns out I could easily spend $800 each month without breaking the bank.

So I went out and bought myself a $350 TV, a $350 Xbox, and a $50 Star Wars game.

I was ecstatic. 

My parents had me believe that having your own TV and an Xbox was an unattainable luxury. And yet I could afford both on one month salary.

My mind was blown.

I could afford to buy an Xbox EVERY. SINGLE. MONTH.


That was the moment I realized I had limiting beliefs. And that it’s possible to get more.

Today, my monthly investment income exceeds my first salary. and I don’t even need to work for it.


This is just a reminder that growth is entirely possible.

Beware of rational delusions 🔽 

When a group of people make something sacred, the members of the cult lose the ability to think clearly about it.


True believers then produce pious fantasies that don't match reality.


Here are 3 ways I've seen this affect investing:

1️⃣  Crypto investors refuse to accept the possibility that they may be wrong;
2️⃣  Real estate investors refuse to recognize the massive risks that comes with leverage;
3️⃣ Stock market investors refuse to diversify correctly;


Diving deeper, I find it applies to the best of us too; Index fund investors tend to:


1️⃣  Ignore the merits of other investments (REITS anyone?);
2️⃣  Overlook that asset allocation is more important than security selection;
3️⃣  Neglect further education out of overconfidence, and never discover the amazing returns factor funds can deliver;


Rational delusions are already polluting politics and religion, don't let it ruin your financial future too.

Growing up I used to have a deep scarcity mindset.

I felt poor, and dumb.

When I went to university, I felt like an imposter.
When I got my first job, I felt like a fraud.


Growing up in a frugal household, I developed a scarcity mindset:

-  Candies were only for special occasions.
-  Toys were only for birthdays and Christmas.
-  A TV in my room? That’s an “unreasonable luxury!”
-  McDonald’s happy meal? Are you crazy? That’s an “unnecessary frivolity.”

Imagine my shock when I got my first salary and discovered I could buy myself goodies whenever I wanted.

I could go to McDonald’s on my lunchbreak. And I could buy myself a TV and an Xbox with just a little budgeting.

It took me a while to grow out of my scarcity mindset. But today I no longer believe that:

- a McDonald ice cream is a luxury.
- a job is the only way to make money.
- I’m unworthy of spending on myself.


Your money mindset is not your fault, but it is your responsibility to change it.

3 Salary secrets you never knew  🔽

Studies found that people who get paid bi-weekly spend more than people who get paid monthly. 
The more often you get paid, the more you believe money is constant, and the more confident you feel in spending.

Bundle-up your salaries in quarterly lumps instead. It'll force you to budget (and thus spend on what's truly important to you).

Bonus point: you'll save more (and thus retire earlier)

The ugly truth about stock market risk ⬇ 

There's two types of risks to investors:
1️⃣  Shallow risk
2️⃣  Deep risk

Shallow risk is the occasional 10% or 20% drop we see in stocks that eventually reverses itself. That's the risk most people obsess about.

Deep risk is the permanent loss you incur from inflation, fees, or taxes. There's no way to get these losses back. The losses are permanent. 


The issue? People ignore deep risk:

1️⃣ Most people don't realize that their savings lost 27% of their value since 2020 (blame inflation).

2️⃣  If you invested 100k in a product with 2% fees, you're 35k poorer than you should be.

3️⃣ If you're an expat and bought ETFs on a whim and didn't pick an Irish domiciled ETF, chances are you're paying more tax than you're supposed to on US dividends. That's 5k on that same 100k investment that's gone forever.

Stop worrying about market volatility, that's just part of the game.
And start worrying about the deep risk.


Let's not leave money on the table!

3 ways corporations have quietly weaponised employees 🔽 

Nobody says this part out loud.
But everyone feels it.

Corporations learned something long before you did:

That's $31,710 cheaper than real estate.

AND you're more diversified
AND you get less volatility (less risk)
AND your expected returns are higher

Compared to a rental property, investing in stocks is:

According to data reviewed by Robert Shiller, a normal prize winner in economics, US real estate prices have only grown by 0.3% annually over the last 200 years once you factor in inflation, costs, and taxes.

And your bank will make $243,000 in interest off your mortgage.

My face when I'm making a financial plan for my 26 year-old client and discover he can retire at 34 ⬇ 


That's the beauty of working in Dubai:
1️⃣  High income

In his case, he went heavy on real estate early on. It was a risky; he bought a few off-plan properties. Off-plan properties are always a gamble:
- Delays

So here are three tips for you to align your behavior to science:

1️⃣  𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆
You're not Warren Buffett. You're not a Nobel prize winner in economics. And you're not special. You're employee # 7,623 of your company and your boss and colleagues think you're average.
Stop falling for the Dunning-Kruger effect, grow some humility, and follow the evidence (i.e. buy boring index funds every month and forget everything else)

2️⃣  𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲
It's incredible how many people go broke looking for a short-cut. Index funds work, you just need to give them time.
Don't throw away easy money because you're looking for a Hail Mary.

Daily market movement seem irrelevant once you adopt a long-term mindset. Instead, it'll help you realize that if you're investing for passive income (and thus holding investments until death), owning stocks is the safest thing you can do.

4 facts about online trading you need to know ⬇ 

1️⃣  Studies found that trading on a mobile app led to a 67% increase in the probability of buying meme stocks or lottery-like stocks.

2️⃣  In the first quarter of 2020, Robinhood users traded 40 times as many shares as an account at CharlesSchwab (controlled for dollar account).

3 statistics that will make you NEVER want to pick stocks again 🔽 


A study of 25,000 publicly listed companies that existed between 1926 and 2016 found that: 

1️⃣  The average return was 14.74% per year 😎 

2️⃣ The median return was 5.23% 😮 

3️⃣  4% of stocks accounted for all the wealth created in the stock market 😵 


Yes, you read that right: 4% of stocks make up all of the gains.
The remaining 96% of stocks were irrelevant.

What's even more shocking is that 50% of stocks provided less than 5.23% return.  And only 42% of stocks outperformed bonds (3-month treasury bills).


Here's what this means for you🔽 

1️⃣  You have a 96% of chance of losing money if you pick stocks at random.

2️⃣ You have a 50% chance of making less than 5% per year.

3️⃣  But you have a 100% chance of capturing the "average" return of 14% if you buy index funds.

Don't ruin your financial future chasing the lottery-like returns. Own the whole market and move on with your day.

Let me put it another way: You're driving to the airport and are on-time for your flight. Do you take the experimental shortcut and run the risk of missing your flight?
