Here's how much tax you pay if you earn €160,000 in France ⬇

These numbers will shock you.

Let's assume a salary of 160,000 EUR / year. 
(Which is the average pay of a pilot)

Assuming the pilot is single, childless, and doesn't have any disabilities, his net salary will be....

78,917 EUR.

That's €6,576 per month.
(about $7,100 (or 26,000 AED))

But the real shock?

It costs the company €220,325 to employ the pilot.
The government likes to hide taxes as "employer contributions".

In other words, of the €220,325 employer cost, the pilot only receives 35% of it on their bank account.

The remaining 65% goes to the state.

But wait, there's more 😉 

You see, France has a sales tax of 20%.
Meaning if you buy a $1,000 phone, $200 goes to taxes.

Assuming the pilot spends 100% of his salary on clothes, cocktails, and shiny goodies, he's paying another €1,305 on taxes every month.

Meaning his €220,325 salary only has a purchasing power of €63,133.

That's 28.6%.

In other words: total tax of 71.4%.

If you're wondering why the UAE has been booming over the 20 years (+194% population growth), you don't have to look any further.

What happens when you lock 3 financial advisers in a room for 8 hours? ⬇

I accidentally ran the experiment when I met up with Joshua Nash -  Chartered MCSI and Daniel Morris at the Dubai Polo Club.

What started as a short get-together turned into an intense 8 hour session. We only left because they kicked us out at midnight 😅 

It was the longest business meeting of my life, but it didn't feel like work.

I remember telling a client about it. His response? "Oh boy, I wish I was there, I would have loved to soak up all your insights on the stock market and gold. I'm sure there was great stock tips!"

And the truth is...

Stock tips never came up.

Not once.

Not once did we ever discuss if:
-  is the stock market was too high
-  is Bitcoin worth it at this price
-  is now is a good time to buy
-  is Nvidia overvalued
-  or what's going on with uranium prices?

Nada.

Because part of the journey to financial literacy is understanding that these questions don't matter.
These questions have already been solved so there's no need to bring them up again. 

It was refreshing to discuss money with people who operate on the same wavelength. 

Instead, here's what we discuss:
- The despicable greed (theft?) of some "advisers"
- Why so few firms truly place client needs before their own
- The horrific state of the financial advice industry for expats
- The impact of VC takeover on previously great financial planning firms

Did you ever wonder if your "friends" are taking advantage of you when you split the bill at brunch? This study will shock you ⬇  

Academics have called this the Unscrupulous Diner's Dilemma.

When a group of friends go out for dinner, and agree to split the bill beforehand (as opposed to getting individual bills), research found that people generally order more dishes AND pick more expensive options 😲 

Whether this is to take advantage of their friends' generosity, or simply the desire not to get fleeced, the effect is real.

Because the study also found that, as individual diners, people pick reasonably priced meals. But if they know the bill will be shared, expensive items suddenly become more appealing.

The author of the study, Uri Gneezy, questions why we would ever agree to share the bill.

In a follow-up study, they found that 80% of people prefer to get individual bills.

In other words, people don't like sharing the bill.

So why is it not done more?

Because there's the social cost of appearing stingy 🙃

If you have 20k in the bank, and your friend only has $500, that's not necessarily "unfair".

Because if your friend enjoyed an extra 800 coffees, 170 brunches, and 26 more weekend getaways than you ever did, it'll be massively unfair to "help out" your friend because "they have less".

Consumption matters.

Some people have lavish lives and pay the bill in retirement.

Others have frugal youths and comfy early retirements.

"That product will never help you beat the market" laments the financial shark in a flashy 3 piece suit he bought with his clients' commissions.

Run a low-cost online business and society thinks you're struggling.

Run a pricey hedge fund that uses client money to fund a firework show on the Burj Khalifa? Society thinks you're a raging success.

But the financially literate? I doubt they were happy to see their investment fees go up in smoke in a firework show.

Last month Lufthansa staff went on strike for a payraise because "Lufthansa's profits doubled in the last year 😠 " and "employees should share in the gains too 😡 " ⬇ 

This is where the importance of financial literacy comes in: Employees can always benefit from company's profits. 

There is a way.

And it's much simpler than holding an entire nation hostage 😅 

That way is buying Lufthansa's stock.

All you have to do is buy shares in a company and you become the co-owner of the company; you're entitled to a share of the profit.

If you did buy Lufthansa stock however, you'd have lost -29% over the last year. 

Doubling profits does not mean the company is doing great. 

But if you believe so, put your money where your mouth is and buy the stock 😉

The important thing is you keep moving forward.
