Didn’t know a soul.
Didn’t speak a word of Portuguese.

→Mark said, “Oh, you definitely need to talk to my guy, Jason.”
→Jason said, “Oh, Katherine would love this book.” 

And Katherine was THE person to talk to. She made the magic happen. 

When people say it’s really all about connections and people, they’re right. 

Write the book. Gain that authority. Let your expertise, stories, and methodologies shine. Then talk to more people. 

You have no idea what will happen.

Here’s what you need to know to keep sane.

You are awesome.
You are doing more than enough.
You are good exactly as you are.

But God loves you far too much to let you stay that way.
It’s time to buckle up. Life is going to get tougher.
Put on a helmet and get ready to get tackled. Hard.

Ask for help sooner than you want to.
Sleep whenever you have the time. 
Forget about the things that don’t matter. 
Sleep, walk, read, pray, repeat.

Go above and beyond only when you’re able.
Say no when you need to. 
Say yes when they need you.
Say, “it’s okay” when you choose wrong. 
Say, “gimme a sec” and then pull yourself together.

Put your head down and do one action.
Tiny stones will bring down even the biggest castles. 
Keep throwing pebbles one day at a time. 

When you fail, write it down.
When you succeed, write it down.
When you aren’t sure, write it down. 
Bring words to life to never forget.

Call Mom.
Talk to a friend. 
Cuddle with your beautiful wife. 
Not later. Now. 

And when things get really hard:
Play a game.
Take an ice bath
Bake a pumpkin loaf. 
Don’t forget what works.
Never backburner your mental health. 

Because there is no finish line for becoming.
There is only improving.
And you have all the time in the world. 

So, get ready to soar onwards and upwards. 
To gallop into the great beyond of parenthood.
To experience life more vividly, more presently, and yes, more painfully.

I do a rigorous competitive analysis for every client, and it is one of the most important parts of my process. 

We pull 25 books that are competition for the book we're writing. 
Then we study the reviews across Amazon and/or Goodreads.

3-star reviews show us how find the gaps the book needs to fill. 

Real people tell you what gaps need to be filled.

→They tell you what sucked. (do less of this)
→They tell you what they loved. (do more of this)
→They tell you when they stopped reading. (be scared of this)
→They tell you where the book contradicted itself. (be aware of this)
→They tell you what they wished the author covered. (add to your outline)

3-star reviews for Atomic Habits:

→ "Another criticism I have of this book is that it could have been even shorter. The last few chapters under “Advanced Tactics” that deal with the topic of mastery were the weakest in the book. While there is an obvious connection between habits and mastery, trying to tie in a topic as complex as mastery was perhaps too ambitious."

→ "Did not live up to the hype. There’s good material here, and easy-to-follow strategies to improve our habits, but I found it a chore to wade through. My interest ebbed and flowed and ironically, I felt it could be the book to undo my healthy reading habits and routine."

This is how to do it for your book:

1. Go to Goodreads/Amazon
2. Type in your keywords
3. Find competitive books
4. Click on reviews. 
5. Filter 3-stars
6. Use your brain (not being facetious here.)
7. Write down what stands out.

You have an awesome idea for a book
Make it better. 
Find the gaps.
Fill the gaps.

PPS: Don't use AI for this process even though you could. Use a human touch. You will catch nuance you would never see in a summary. Feel the frustration behind the words.

Taking a contrarian stance 12xed my impressions. One thing is clear: the problem with my LinkedIn content is that I’ve been too nice.


In my Monday post I said,

That post:

→ 111 new profile viewers
→ Several dm convos 

And honestly, the conversations in the comments and DMs were some of the best and most insightful I’ve had in awhile.

I’m generally a pretty nice guy.
Understanding nuance and complexity is important.

But nice guys finish last on LinkedIn. 
Fortune favors the contrarian. Obviously. 
And I'm tired of averaging 700 impressions per post.

I'm still going to be the same ol' approachable Jordan,
but I'm not pulling my punches anymore. 
The gloves are coming off.

Don’t worry, I still love you. 

PS: Adam Knorr has been saying this stuff for a million years. Sorry, bro, took me awhile to get it through my thick skull. 

PPS: Some other contrarian takes I’m considering throwing out there. Please start arguing now. 

1. Pickleball is only for old people or lazy millennials. 
2. The Harry Potter movies are a snooze fest, and the new HBO series is going to be terrible. 
3. Raising twins is going to be easy (Miranda did NOT approve this one ;))
4. You need to get better at doing things, not just talking about doing things. 
5. You’re probably going to die before you finish your book, especially if you keep putting it off.

Everyone says no is the most powerful word you can learn. They're wrong. It's actually yes. 


"No" mires you in complacency
"Yes!" supercharges you with possibility. 

I said yes to adventure in 2019
I said yes to purpose in 2021
I said yes to a doubled family in 2025 

I keep saying yes,
No hesitation = no regrets 

2019: I spent 2 months in Thailand.
My bubble burst and all fear of travel was poofed out of existence.

2019: I flew to Macedonia for a wedding.
Hello Europe. You're really cool.

2020: I landed in Lisbon before the pandemic.
5 years later, haven't left.

2021: Said yes to ghostwriting books full time. 
Changing lives through the written word is absolutely my purpose in life. 

2022: I was in London during their worst storm ever.
I almost didn't go because of the storm, but the trip was so worth it. 
Met some cool people like Sandy Farquharson at a padel clinic. 

2022: I crossed Canada by train.
Dude and dudets: let me tell you, this trip was phenomenal. 

2023: I scouted Switzerland for possible living potential.
Stunning, but the food cost said no.

2024: I went to Italy by bus and train.
Oh, Italy, I love you. 

2025: I found out we are having twins.
Yeah, this one might just take the whole cake and eat it too. 

None of this happens if I said no to Thailand.
Saying yes changed my life.
Saying yes will change yours.

Don't be one of those people who keep saying no. 
Who let fear dictate their decisions.  
Who have regrets... 

Say yes.

Your boring content is putting me to sleep. You're not doing anything interesting, but you still want to be a thought leader. Uh oh. See the gap, Champ?


Because I am writing a book, I have something to say. 
Because I am starting a podcast, I have something to say.
Because I am going to conferences, I have something to say.
Because I am always reading, I always have something enough to say.
Because I've been posting on LinkedIn for 2 years... Yeah, I got some words.

I'm not any better than you. 
Far, far, FAR from it. 

But I am doing and failing regularly. 
So that I can share what I learn with you. 

You can't be a leader of thoughts without:

→Falling on your face.
→Starting projects that fail. 
→Experimenting out in the real world
→Talking to real people about real things.
→Doing something, somewhere consistently. 

Too many people want the cake without cracking any eggs. 
But you need to Jump in that cake mix and start dancing around. 

Because:

→People who break things learn how to fix things. 
→People who connect with people learn how to connect people. 
→People who laugh, cry, and bleed are the ones with a story worth telling.

These people are the thought leaders we actually trust. 

If you want to be a thought leader, 
give yourself something real to talk about.

Do something. Anything. And then tell us about it.
The real secret here is that everyone has the capacity for thought leadership,
but this doesn't happen behind a computer screen. 

This is the new age of content. 
I'm here for it.

Becoming a writer is like joining witness protection
[I like being unavailable; you won't.]


When I’m in the thick of writing season, I practice these habits that bother people:

→Ignore emails and messages from family members and friends. “No, I can’t talk to you today.”

→Take a week (or more) to schedule a connect call or other important, but lower-priority task.

→Turn my phone off for stretches of time.

→Say no to weekend dinner invites, Sunday night Zoom calls, and other things I don’t really want to do anyway. 

→Spend Friday nights hammering away on my laptop all alone at Starbucks (Sorry, Miranda!)…

Without these rude habits, I can’t do deep focused work. 
These are the “sacrifices” I make.

Before becoming a writer, ask yourself:

Am I absolutely sure I want to do this? 

You have other options: 

A) have someone write for you--saving you from being a jerk--or 
B) you could, ya know, just not do it…”

Everyone wants to become a writer because it sounds glamorous.
But it’s mostly not all that great,
unless you really love 4-hour cafe writing sessions. 

Or,

Enjoy your life while your ghostwriter tip-taps away in Starbucks... 
Alone except for my Americano. I’m good with that.

What I learned from scheduling 31 virtual coffees in the last 90 days. (It’s not all good)


Some of you will be excellent referral partners. 
Some of you didn’t even show up.

Some of you made my day.
Some of you didn’t smile. 

Some of you will send me intros.
Some of you won’t bother.

Some of you will get great intros from me. 
Some of you will never hear from me again. 

Some of you will become IRL friends with me. 
Some of you I wouldn’t have a beer with.

What I’m really learning about networking:

→Talking more about what I do is a good thing
→No person is less valuable than anyone else. 
→Smiling on a Zoom call matters a lot. 
→I’m allowed to have bad days too. 
→I am not a fit for everyone.
→No call is a waste of time.
→You get what you give.

How many VCs is too many?
How many is too little?
How many of you done in the past 90 days?

I’ve been writing for 10+ years: AI is the best thing to happen to good writers since the word processor—but for lazy writers it's poison. 


10 ways to be a better writer:

1. Trigger emotion in the reader. This is your value now and forever. 

2. Relate to people. Talk to them. Out loud and in person. 

3. Get better at thinking: Good writers don’t get paid to write, they get paid to think. 

4. Become a hook master. Hooks matter. Especially in books. 

5. Choose your writing voice, don't chase it. 

6. Capture thoughts as you have them: I use Trello by Atlassian

7. Write garbage as quickly as possible, then rewrite x3 to refine it. 

8. Never forget the reader. Ever. Ever. Ever. 

9. Outline like it is Obi-Wan Kenobi and you are Leia. (It is your only hope.)

10. Publish imperfection. 

Bonus: AI will make you a faster and better writer, but only if you question every word.

I’ve been sprinting through life with the grace of a baby giraffe. Weirdly, it’s helped me grow my business.


You know those lines at the airport that say, “Keep moving, don’t stop.”?

If I followed these directions, I’d break something. 

I knocked a Walmart sliding door off its hinges once. Lucky for me, the greeter was on break…

My herky-jerky movements and quick-walking nature cause me to:

→Drop my phone onto my face 3x daily
→Measure salt while slamming my face into the cupboard door. 
→And yes, run into sliding doors at full speed. 

My parents yelled SLOW DOWN!
My wife just laughs and sighs.
But my clients applaud. 

I’ve become someone who:

→Keeps moving (always writing my own book)
→Keeps dreaming at all costs (no goal is too big)
→Keeps body slamming doors (gatekeepers don’t stand a chance)

Slide the door if you can.
Run into it full speed if you must. 

If you want to work with someone who’ll charge the gates for you. 
Who will always answer your questions honestly and openly. 
Who will drag you over the finish line if you need it...

Let’s talk. But you gotta keep up! I’ll leave you in the dust.
At least until the next sliding door knocks me out.

Most Indie authors are broke because they publish for the wrong reasons. I was one of them. In 2015, I was an underpaid indie author playing a losing game. 


When I published my first book back in 2015, I had high hopes:

→I hoped I could quit my job.
→I hoped I would become a NY Times Bestselling author.
→I hoped I could move to a private island and sip margs by the beach.

Nope. Nope. And definitely nope.

After I published my own business book last year, this is what they tell me:

→“Your book is so generous.”
→“Jordan, I can’t wait to work with you.”
→“I read your book before joining this call.”

And probably most importantly,

"Yes."

I’ve learned in my decade in this industry that most Indie authors publish for all the wrong reasons. And this is why most of them are broke. 

And that’s not a jab at these authors. 
I used to be one, remember? 

But this is why I turn away indie authors asking for my help:

⟩Indie authors hope a book saves them.
⟫Business authors use a book to grow what already works.

⟩Indie authors cry over paltry royalty checks.
⟫Business authors know the value of relevance and trust.

⟩Indie authors publish and pray.
⟫Business authors publish because they know they’ll convert.

Business-minded authors think differently about their book and I love them for it:

→They aren’t afraid to invest in expert guidance.
→They write for the buyer, not just for search results.
→They treat every story as a way to support the reader.
→They design the book to earn trust before the very first call.
→They know that writing the book will help clarify their offers and messaging. 

One path gives you $5 per copy sold.
The other path gives you a busting pipeline.

What’s the biggest mistake you see people making in your industry?

I quit a comfortable job in 2017.
I chose writing and never looked back.
I welcome the good, the bad, and the cherishable. 


I love what writing lets me do:

→ Say yes to padel
→ Take a nap in the afternoon.
→ Live in Portugal, (or wherever I want)
→ Hit up Honest Greens every Monday with Miranda
→ Meditate or lift weights in the afternoons, whatever I need
→ Travel when I want. Hello future Jordan looking back at me from Japan!
→ Cook most of my own food (but still eat the odd pastel de nata or 2 or 4)

Writing also “lets” me:

→ Spend too much time on Zoom. 
→ Spend Monday mornings writing
→ Spend Sunday afternoons writing
→ Skip paid time off, (what is PTO, anyway!?)
→ Spend Friday nights writing instead of playing games
→ Skip paternity leave when I become a dad later this year
→ Spend so much time writing I see words when I close my eyes

There is so much good, and some not so good.
I'd choose this path again every time.

I love what I do.
The good, the bad, the ugly, and the cherishable.

Before I went to the gym yesterday I was feeling pretty blue.

2 beautiful and happy little twinnies,
Dancing, playing, laughing. Happy. 
instead of 2 crying babies keeping me up all night…

Before: my mind focused only on the bad what-ifs.
After: my brain couldn’t stop imagining all the good. 

If you’re like me, your mind can’t comprehend the beauty of the world around you until you push your body to the vertical limit.

Get active and you will:

→ Connect better
→ Love better
→ Think better
→ Sleep better
→ Write better

You won’t write your book because you're afraid?
Really? Really!?
You're gonna let fear stop you?
Come on...

Overcome these 7 unavoidable author fears:

1. Fear: “I’ll finish and gain nothing from the effort.”
Overcome it: A book can sell 0 copies and still change your life. Define 3 wins before you start: 5 client leads, 15 podcasts booked, 50 book reviews, etc. 

2. Fear: “50,000 words is impossible.”
Overcome it: Build a detailed outline and your book will write itself. Record voice notes whenever you get stuck. Transcribe and throw them into Chat for a great way to start. 

3. Fear: “I’m an imposter. Why would anyone learn from me?”
Overcome it: Anchor the book in your lived lessons. Use specific client stories, steps that you actually took, and real numbers so readers feel your authority without you having to hit them over the head with it. 

4. Fear: “I don’t want to be seen.”
Overcome it: Start slowly and share more over time. Start with 5 beta readers, gather feedback, revise, then widen the circle to 25.

5. Fear: “This won’t pay off.”
Overcome it: Set goals you will reach no matter what: booked calls, speaking requests, email growth, or a higher close rate with warmed-up leads.

6. Fear: “My schedule is packed.”
Overcome it: 3 nights a week times 2 to 3 hours for 6 months gets you a draft. If that still feels like too much, hire a ghostwriter and gain a strategic partner. 

7. Fear: “Someone already wrote this.”
Overcome it: Your angle is your differentiator. Your stories. Your methods. Your readers. No one has written your book.

Should coaches write a book? I put myself in the hot seat with keynote and presentation coach John A. Ball on The Coaching Clinic podcast. 


He asked the tough questions.
I gave my real answers.

→ Why should coaches have a book?
Building trust, getting speaking engagements, commanding higher rates (coaching and consulting), and the crazy clarity you gain while writing.

→ How important is research?
Depends on the type of content: long-tenured coaches lean on experience. Newer coaches will lean on interviews and data.

→ Is book writing different from posts and newsletters?
Yes, longer arcs and deeper stories, but you still need hooks and clear structure.

→ How long should it be?
40–60k words at least for business books, shorter works if it truly helps the reader.

→ Why don’t coaches finish books on their own?
Because people are busy. 
I do the heavy lifting.
And the book actually gets done.

→ What does working with you look like?
If you can do 10-15 podcast interviews, you can write a book. 
1–2 hours of interviews or async voice notes per week, I outline/draft, you five feedback, 6-12 months is typical. 

→ Can't AI just write it?
No

→ Can you just stitch my blogs and podcasts into a book?
Yes with collaboration, but I'm not a ghost you can just ghost. 

→ How do you get my voice right?
Easy: voice is a choice we make together, then we refine with feedback.

→ Do bestseller labels matter and what marketing works?
Nice to have, sure, but impact is better. 
Giving 1 book away to the right person can make all the difference.

And DonJay is one of those people. 

On this week's episode of The Coachability Code Podcast, I Zoomed from across the ocean with DonJay, one of my favorite people on LinkedIn.

We talked about all things coaching, but we also shared our mutual love for LinkedIn and the people here.

For him (and for me too!) Showing up on LinkedIn is really about:

→ Making real and lasting friendships, 
→ Giving encouragement and genuine support.
→ Reaching out and starting real conversations.

Sure, we all want leads. We're here to do business, but dang if it doesn't feel good while we're doing it!

One of the things he said that stuck with me:

"If you got 30 minutes, I would just like to know you better." 

This is the best DM strategy for making real connections (that actually works).

→ DM 10 people a thank you GIF (no pitch!)
→ Leave 10 thoughtful comments (this means reading the full post)
→ Post 1 small story from your day

Because as he says:

"No one ever picks the feedback sandwich. People usually want direct feedback."

And here’s what this conversation really turned up the heat: Even though most people say they want direct feedback, direct feedback only works if you have trust. 

Trust from the person giving the feedback.
Trust from the person receiving the feedback. 
Trust that flows from both sides. 

Without trust: Walls go up. People get defensive. The feedback tastes like a moldy Reuben.

Build trust first and then give feedback. Serve up feedback that not only tastes okay, but is actually helpful.
