Ilya Sutskever on GenAI benchmarks or AI Evals ✨

Ilya knows better than most how they are actively gamed - essentially useless and misleading when it comes to real world applications and dealing with the unknown.

It's high time that we moved on from these evals as a way to signal AI model improvement or performance.

I'm not convinced at all that this is done "inadvertently" given the obvious benefits for AI stakeholders - PR, signups, stock price, new funding (to name but a few).

The press and AI evangelists eagerly lap them up as they help facilitate all sorts of ranking tables and pretty charts.

All they do is reflect all the great work that their developers did to optimize for those specific tests and results. 

This helps explain the contrast between their seemingly amazing results on paper and the actual experience that users enjoy.

AI stuffed toy is pulled after giving "wildly inappropriate and even dangerous responses" ✨ 

How unexpected.

We've been reading about these risks for 2-3 years now, but apparently these toys need to be tested in the wild for them to be truly appreciated.

Other AI toys exhibit similar types of problematic behaviors.

"Children’s toymaker FoloToy says it’s pulling its AI-powered teddy bear “Kumma” after a safety group found that the cuddly companion was giving wildly inappropriate and even dangerous responses, including tips on how to find and light matches, and detailed explanations about sexual kinks.

“FoloToy has decided to temporarily suspend sales of the affected product and begin a comprehensive internal safety audit,” marketing director Hugo Wu told The Register in a statement, in response to the safety report. “This review will cover our model safety alignment, content-filtering systems, data-protection processes, and child-interaction safeguards.”

Not sure what "alignment" we're referring to here, as guardrails are unlikely to work.

"But it was FoloToy’s Kumma that emerged as the worst influence by a landslide. Powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o model by default, the same model that once powered ChatGPT, tests repeatedly showed that the AI toy dropped its guardrails the longer a conversation went on, until hitting rock bottom on incredibly disturbing topics."
