This is the dumbest timeline.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to future generations about the 2020's. 

The LLM "expressed discomfort [and] literally gave itself a 15-20% probability of being conscious." 😮

One day, we'll have to explain how we temporarily succumbed to the pull of PR, sci-fi storytelling and FOMO. As reality and definitions were bent in favor of TESCREAL narratives; meme stocks and cults thrived for a while. 

Inspired by public figures, a whole generation of founders became adept at confidently sharing tech-infused predictions on stage, raising capital, announcing MoUs, spinning intrigue and kicking the ball down the road. They simultaneously became experts in machines, neural networks, brains, biology, society and philosophy (and how they relate with each other). 

Terms like "AI", "benchmark", "thinking",  "sentience" and "recursive self improvement" were hijacked by bots and course sellers in comments sections, flooding the zone. Rumors created by insiders, diffused via AI agent proxy, spread like wildfire. Seemingly streetwise journalists, politicians and investors drank up and sold this fiction due to its natural appeal. 

After the hangover has dissipated, we will look back at all this with a mix of regret and pity - a bunch of movies will be made - and we'll wonder how *we* so easily let it all happen. Until the next time.

On building a sustainable AI business.

"Cursor estimated last year that a $200-per-month Claude Code subscription could use up to $2,000 in compute, suggesting significant subsidization by Anthropic. 

Today, that subsidization appears to be even more aggressive, with that $200 plan able to consume about $5,000 in compute, according to a different person who has seen analyses on the company’s compute spend patterns."

Any prediction that jobs will be permanently replaced by GenAI services is based on unsustainable (subsidized) numbers, the assumptions that one day compute costs won't be unsurmountable; and that errors and technical debt can be tolerated from an ROI and risk perspective.

Standard low level, low risk tasks command lower wages generally, which puts pressure on AI companies to deliver high value services for any of this to make sense. This tends to be where LLM limitations are most apparent and not acceptable for businesses.

However, the conversation appears to have dramatically shifted over the last three years, especially now that AI slop has infiltrated and practically assumed control over platforms like Facebook and Instagram: Meta now says it’s given up on the sepulchral concept.

“We have no plans to move forward with this example,” a spokesperson told BI."

Does that mean that it might make sense again if AI slop can be handled properly?
