Perfectionism kills passion. Here's my story: When I started making music in early 2007, I couldn't care less what anyone thought. I made dark psychedelic trance (believe it or not) and I just enjoyed pushing the boundaries of what was possible with sound synthesis, samples, and effects. The weirdest mind-bending sounds frantically panning left and right, I didn't care. And the crowd loved it. As I continued making music and playing gigs throughout the years (even in Switzerland!), I noticed I got more interested in the theory-side of things. I wanted to learn why some arrangements work better than others, how you should mix your sounds for maximum impact, and all the (many) "unbreakable" rules. Like I always do, I go all in and learned everything (plus a bit more.) What happened? I stopped making music. "You should never put delay on high-frequency sounds!" "Cut the bassline under 60Hz to give the kick room to breathe" "Layer your sounds and never play two sounds in the same frequency together" I read so many tips and opinions I got completely paralyzed. Perfectionism. Making music now felt like a mini panic-attack. Back then, I didn't understand why. --- The funny thing is, the same thing happened with LinkedIn. As soon as I found myself over-obsessing over the best hooks, the best structures, the best topics, the best content, my love for posting died. Posting anything felt robotic, like a way to tick the boxes and hopefully see a corresponding bump in engagement โ a "thank you" from the LinkedIn gods because you did everything right. I hate it. When I stop obsessing over details, stop caring what other people think, and truly am myself, that's when I have the most fun (and best results!) doing anything creative. Of course, I believe we should always strive at a better way to do things... But I think the balance of learning and applying for greatness or getting choice paralysis deluxe is a fine line, indeed.
