Last week I had the privilege of meeting Viswanathan Anand - someone I've admired from afar since my childhood chess-playing days. Meeting him was surreal in the way these moments often are - when someone who existed primarily in an orbit farthest away suddenly becomes real.

We had a brief conversation, but what stayed with me was his keynote chat with Romal Shetty. He talked about something I've been thinking about constantly: how we've moved from competing against machines to learning with them. The game has changed. Technology expands what's possible, but humans still decide which moves to make.

What resonated wasn't just his brilliance at the board - it was his quiet wisdom about leadership itself. True mastery isn't only about seeing twenty moves ahead. It's about temperament. About knowing when to trust your instinct and when to let the data guide you. About treating AI as an amplifier of human judgment, not a replacement for it.

Meeting him was one of those rare moments where the person exceeds the legend.

Our panel at #CES2026 dove into something that's no longer theoretical: AI agents are already here, driving real impact across industries today.
We shared examples of agents automating complex workflows and delivering measurable results right now. This isn't about potential anymore - it's about what's actually working in production. But deployment at scale brings real challenges. We also discussed what organizations are learning as they navigate reliability, oversight, and human accountability in live systems.

Worker access to AI jumped 50% in 2025. Production deployments are set to double in six months. Your competitors are moving. But here's the split: 34% of organizations are reimagining their business with AI. The other 66%? They're just automating existing processes.

The report calls this "the untapped edge". 

The question isn't whether your organization is using AI. It's whether you're in the third that's transforming, or the two-thirds that's optimizing.

Jim Rowan's inspiring keynote at #DAIF2026 this morning: "The Year AI Got Down to Business."

We've moved past the era of pilots and proofs of concept. The organizations succeeding with AI today aren't the ones with the most experiments running - they're the ones with the clearest path from technology to business outcomes.
What we're seeing across enterprise leaders: a fundamental shift from asking "what can AI do?" to "how do we scale what works and deliver measurable ROI?"

The bar has risen. Access to technology isn't the differentiator anymore. Execution is. Strategy is. The ability to reimagine your business model, not just optimize existing processes.

That's where the real transformation happens.

Just read the latest AI leadership report from Charlie Hugh-Jones,.... I was one of the leaders interviewed, and reading it back was an uncomfortable realization. Most of what's slowing down AI adoption isn't the technology. It's us.

⏩ "We truly have to disrupt ourselves as leaders to succeed with AI. We cannot keep doing what we did two years ago." The resistance isn't just coming from our teams. It's coming from the leadership table too.

⏩ There's a fork in the road we're all facing: "One is treating AI at a use case level, and the other is looking at AI to completely re-imagine it as a transformative technology." If you're still running AI like it's another IT project with an ROI spreadsheet, you're optimizing for the past.

⏩ The question I wish more C-suites were asking: "How can you get your workforce to trust the agentic software you might be bringing in if it's going to directly impact their jobs?" Deployment without trust is just expensive theater.

⏩ The weirdest part? I spent last few months at industry conferences watching competitors share playbooks. Not because we're suddenly altruistic, but because "it's impossible for any human being to understand everything," and the challenges are bigger than our competitive moats.

None of us have this figured out. But pretending we do is the fastest way to fall behind.

AI LEADERSHIP IN 2026

We're putting the final touches on Deloitte AI Institute's State of AI in the Enterprise 2026 report, and here's what's clear: nobody's asking "which use cases should we tackle?"anymore. They're asking "how do we actually make this thing work at scale without burning through our budget or confusing everyone?"

The shift from shiny demos to actual business results has been...fascinating.
The data we've gathered tells a maturing story about what's actually working, where leaders are stuck, and what separates organizations that are getting real results from those still spinning their wheels. Spoiler: it's not about the fanciest models or the biggest budgets.

New data from 3,235 global business leaders shows a widening gap between companies still playing with AI pilots and those actually transforming at scale. 

Efficiency gains are nice, but they're not the point. The real opportunity? Completely new capabilities. Reimagined workflows. Empowered people doing more valuable work.

So AI has officially moved from "cool new thing" to "wait, are we actually getting our money's worth?" in boardrooms everywhere. The numbers are wild: hundreds of billions pouring into AI investments, but only 22% of boards have actual governance policies in place. Most directors don't even have AI expertise, and 70% say it'll take over a year just to figure out if they're seeing the ROI they expected.

Meanwhile, boards are walking a tightrope between two extremes: 
Too aggressive = deploying AI without enough scrutiny and 
Too cautious = paralysis from fear of reliability and errors
The stakes? Data breaches, regulatory compliance, rogue employees using unapproved tools, and the looming question: "What's our plan when (not if) an AI-driven cyberattack hits?"

Bottom line: AI moved from buzzword to business-critical overnight. Boards that set clear oversight frameworks now will capture the benefits.

Over the years, I've been fortunate to build a career across different industries and organizations, and one of the greatest gifts has been the incredible network of people I've worked alongside.

I've learned that not every professional connection is meant to last beyond a particular chapter, and that's perfectly natural. Some colleagues remain tied to that specific time and place, valued for what we accomplished together.
But then there are those special relationships that endure. Some colleagues become lifelong close friends whom you continue to meet on a regular basis. Others are wonderful connections that, while perhaps not as close, have a quality where we can pick up anytime, anywhere, as if no time has passed at all.
I'm deeply grateful for all of it...the temporary connections that taught me to be present and collaborative, and the lasting relationships that remind me the best part of any career is the people we meet along the way....especially when we meet them after a few years unexpectedly!

In chess, memorizing brilliant opening moves gets you through maybe the first few moves. Then the real game starts. We're seeing the same thing with AI. Most companies have gotten pretty good at the opening: running pilots, experimenting with models, getting proof of concepts to work.

But here's what our latest State of AI 2026 research found: only 34% are actually reimagining their business with AI. The rest are stuck replaying the same opening moves. The middle game is where it gets hard. Integration. Scaling. Change management. Measuring real ROI instead of just proving the tech works.

Which is why I'm looking forward to hearing from India's first grandmaster, Viswanathan Anand at the Deloitte AI Forum. If anyone understands the discipline of moving from opening theory to winning the actual game, it's him.
