“Nature abhors a vacuum” - Aristotle A funny thing happened when I “retired” a while back… I got really, really, really busy…Aristotle, it seems, was absolutely onto something! Fantasies of spending time improving my golf and guitar playing were supplanted by a seemingly disaggregated collection of projects I allowed onto my calendar. As it turns out several of these projects have now latched on to my ongoing schedule…are not at all disaggregated AND are proving to be quite energizing, and fun for this “graybeard”! “Nature abhors a vacuum”. While this story obviously offers up examples of ironies and epiphanies from my own life, in actuality it's being written to see if you find Aristotle’s observation resonating at all in your own life? Viewed from your own lens, are there projects of any sort you might entertain to enrich your life and time? I enjoy the zen-like time spent in individual pursuits (guitar playing and golf) yet as it turns out they were unable to scratch the itch somehow embedded in my DNA…the ideal of CONNECTION. CONNECTION of people (to themselves) to their teams, families, causes and/or cultures was the underlying theme of my entire career in executive search and has followed me onto the projects now on my calendar…not allowing me a vacuum…what about you? The advisory roles with two start-ups, the several individual clients, the two books I’m writing and the courses inside the nonprofit I founded (The Fifth Quarter Project) all have their roots in CONNECTION. What’s filling your vacuum? To what are you CONNECTED? What’s your Fifth Quarter Project? Connection is communication; created far more often than not…by conversation…first with self! Connection creates communities, families, friendships, marriages Connection build cultures (corporate and team) (The opposite is true as well…disconnection, whether individuals to one another, in families, neighborhoods, groups etc is a root cause of problems in society today) You’ll never regret CONNECTION to something…think about what that might be for yourself “Nature abhors a vacuum” and it sure seems silly to mess with Mother Nature so… I don’t know whether or not my knowledge on the subject is any better, worse or different than yours. I do know being connected to some thing, some cause is vital AND how much we will all lose touch with ourselves and the rest of the human race without being intentional about it in our lives. How to make it happen is an individual thing as well as an ongoing process If you ever wanna discuss your process, I’m an open book [email protected]
