Since 2009 I work as a professional facilitator and moderator, specialised in leading public dialogues, participatory process and political debates. I advise governments on how to strengthen democracy by in-depth citizens’ engagement, and I run a training program for moderators and facilitators.

Tallinna Pelgulinna Riigigümnaasium

As the founder of the Estonian Dialogue Academy, I teach a weekly elective called 'Doing Philosophy' for pupils aged 16-19 at the new Pelgulinna Riigigümnaasium in Tallinn, Estonia. The main aim is to develop dialogue and critical thinking skills by exploring philosophical questions and participating in group discussions. The lessons in this course develop around the students' own ideas, questions and observations. Pelgulinna Riigigümnaasium focuses on environmental and climate issues and on building a strong democratic Estonia and civil society.

Citizens' Assembly Amsterdam

Together with Yvette Jeuken I initiated the first Citizens' Assembly in Amsterdam. In June 2015 many Amsterdammers came together during the Civic Summit Amsterdam (Burgertop Amsterdam). On this day, participants discussed topics and drafted an agenda for the city. The Civic Summit was organized by a group of over one hundred independent volunteers.

On behalf of the Province of Flevoland, I organised the Flevo Summit (FlevoTop), a one-day assembly of citizens.

Bart Cosijn is a professional moderator, facilitator, participation designer and democracy activist with fifteen years of experience. His motto is: ‘Talking is silver, being heard is golden’. He specialises in moderating public dialogues, debates, and group sessions in complex situtations. Bart gives courses in moderating and he coaches facilitators. He advises local governments and NGOs on citizens’ participation and co-creation. Bart is the the founder of the Estonian Dialogue Academy.

Bart works in different countries in Europe and overseas. He is a member of the Dutch Moderators Association. In 2014 he initiated the first Citizens’ Assembly in the city of Amsterdam. Bart is based in Tallinn and Rotterdam.
