As we head into Thanksgiving week, I’ve been thinking a lot about what this second year of going solo has meant.

This is definitely not the career path I pictured for myself. I always thought I’d be part of a team at a company somewhere. But life nudged me in a different direction, and I’m genuinely grateful for where it led.

I’m grateful for the clients who’ve trusted me with their businesses and let me be a small part of their growth.

I’m grateful for the partners, both familiar and new, who bring so much talent, energy, and generosity to the work.

And I’m grateful for the flexibility to do work I truly love and still be present for my family.

Someone told me last week I should tone down the "mom content" on LinkedIn.

Focus more on marketing. 
Be more professional. 
You know the drill.

Hard pass.

Here's why:

I spent years in environments with a motherhood tax. The silent (and sometimes not-so-silent) penalties for having a family. Missed opportunities. Subtle doubts about commitment. The assumption that being a present parent meant being a less serious professional.

It's a big reason I went out on my own. I wanted to build a business where I could do great marketing work and be present for my kids. A life where those things weren't in competition.

Motherhood has made me better at my work, not worse. The skills I've developed (prioritizing ruthlessly, communicating clearly, finding creative solutions under pressure, managing chaos) serve my clients incredibly well. My kids are relentless life teachers. 

And here's the best part: The more authentically myself I show up, the more I attract clients I actually want to work with. I don't want to work with people who'd be irritated if a kid walks through a Zoom call on a snow day. 

I want to work with humans who get it. 
Who value results over performative professionalism.

That's been the biggest blessing of showing up as my whole self. It filters for the right people.

What's the worst "be more professional" advice you've ever gotten?

"Work like you aren't a mom" and 
"wear make-up to show you care" are high on my list.

I bought a bag because an Instagram reel told me it could hold a gallon of milk.

I mean that literally. A woman on my feed dropped a gallon of milk into a cute little Emmafy sling bag and my brain went… no way. 

I was busy, I was scrolling, but it stood out enough to stop my scroll.

As a mom, I want bags that aren’t bulky but can haul a shocking amount of stuff, oh and looks cute. That single clip hit every checkbox. 

Right audience. Right problem. Real human. Simple demo. 
No dramatic music or inspirational quotes. 
Just “holy shit, it fits.”

Bought the bag. Promptly put a gallon of milk in it like a gremlin doing a science experiment. 

It fit. And it’s cute. And has the perfect amount of pockets.

That’s effective marketing. 
Stupid simple. Clear value. Built for the right person.

Most companies overthink their marketing. 
They talk around the point. 
They bury the value. 
They forget their buyer just wants to know if the thing will fit a crap ton of stuff.

Show the thing people care about. 
Show it in a way that solves their actual problem. 
Make it easy to say yes.

Your buyer is busy. Give them the milk test.

It's almost December. Most CEOs are looking at their marketing like: "Well, that didn't work. Time to try something else in Q1."

But here's what actually happened:
You spent Q4 doing the marketing equivalent of speed dating. One month it was LinkedIn. Then you heard podcasts were "having a moment." Then someone told you about newsletter sponsorships. Then TikTok. Then... well, you get it.

The three marketing mistakes that killed your Q4:

𝟭. 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲
You chased every channel that promised quick wins. But here's the truth: Dollar Shave Club built a billion-dollar business using TWO channels. Not ten. Two. You wanted marketing results but didn't want to commit the budget. So you went "scrappy" when what you really needed was strategic investment. Here's what bargain marketing gets you: half-finished websites, inconsistent content, and campaigns that die before they generate any momentum. Growth isn't expensive. Restarting every quarter because you underfunded the last attempt? That's expensive.

Stop asking "What's the hot channel?"
Start asking "Where are my customers, and what do they need to hear from me?"

Start investing in what actually builds sustainable growth.

Stop jumping between tactics.
Start building a foundation that compounds.

Q1 is 26 days away. You can start the year chasing shiny objects again, or you can finally build something that works.

For the first time since becoming a parent, I’m not entering the holiday season feeling like a feral raccoon in a tinsel factory.

Part of it is the kids getting older. Six and ten is a different kind of chaos.

Part of it is pure survival skills. In our house, we celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas. Which means ten days of presents, wrapping paper carnage, and trying to remember where I hid half the gifts. It’s a lot.

A few years ago, this season flattened me. I’d hit January feeling exhausted, not recharged in the slightest. 

Here’s what changed.

1) I say no a lot more.

My early parent years were one long yes. School stuff, extended family stuff, friend stuff. If it existed, I felt obligated. By the end of December, I was wiped out and had very little actual quality time to show for it. Now I say no without the apology tour. It annoys a few people. It also keeps me sane (sorry Mom).

2) We stopped trying to do every holiday activity.

I can go overboard. Easily. So each kid picks two must-do things. That’s it. Luckily their lists overlap. Everything else is optional. The whole season feels lighter when you’re not sprinting through a holiday bucket list.

3) Lazy days are scheduled.
Yes, on the calendar. Because if they are not protected, they vanish. These are our best days. Zero obligations. Zero rushing. Just slowing down together.

And my favorite hack of all. We use one magical Hanukkah gift bag instead of wrapping eight separate presents. The bag gets refilled each night like a little portal of holiday convenience. It started as pure overwhelm and laziness. Now it is a tradition and the kids love it.

What is one thing you are doing this year to stay sane?

Day three of snow days in Richmond… tell me I’m not the only one having mild flashbacks to lockdown parenting.

It’s not the same, thankfully.
It’s only three days (hopefully).
I have a lot more flexibility now.
I no longer am trying to juggle breastfeeding + diapers on calls
 
But still, the cortisol levels are… up there.

If you’re juggling work, kids, Zooms, snacks, soggy mittens, and the vibe of 2020 whispering in the background, solidarity. We’re fine. It’s fine. Everything’s fine.

Stay warm out there. And may your meetings be mercifully reschedulable.

People talk about marketing like it's manual labor.
And sure, some parts are a grind. Deck revisions. Random requests. The classic "can we make the logo bigger."

But the work itself? It's one of the best gigs going.

When I guest lectured at VCU earlier this year, a student asked if I actually like my job.
I said yes. Easily.

Because I get to do things most people never slow down to notice:
-Dig into why customers are frustrated in the first place.
-Figure out the leverage business isn't seeing.
-Turn those problems into profit.

That's the job. Creative, messy, and it keeps you awake in a good way.

If marketing feels miserable, it's rarely the work itself, it's everything else. The whiplash. The politics. The constant pivots with no through-line.

Clear that out, and the whole thing gets a lot more interesting and a heck of a lot more fun.

So, what's the best part of your job?

Your audience isn't ignoring you. They just don't believe you anymore.
And you probably don't even know when you lost them.

It wasn't one bad campaign. It was quieter than that.

-It was the ad that said "no credit card required" but asked for payment details anyway. 
-The LinkedIn post about being human-first, followed by a landing page full of jargon and urgency timers. 
-The newsletter that promised strategy but delivered surface-level tips.

Every touchpoint is a micro-promise.

Your audience isn't evaluating them in isolation. They're pattern-matching.
-Does this feel like the same brand I saw last week?
-Does this match what they promised before?

When the answer is "not really," trust dies. 
Not in scandals. In small inconsistencies you don't even notice you're committing.

Before you publish anything this week, ask:
- What did my last 3 touchpoints promise about who we are?
- Does THIS piece keep that same promise?
- If someone saw ONLY this, would they recognize my brand?

If not, don't publish it.

You don't need more marketing. You need more alignment.
Trust is built in the repetition of kept promises. Growth follows.
