Established in 2016 by Samoan, Tongan and Fijian professional rugby players, Pacific Rugby Players Welfare is a not-for- profit organisation that provides assistance to 100+ Pacific Island players throughout the UK, contributing to their success both on and off the field.

Right To Play

Based in the London office of the Sport for Development NGO Right To Play working as Sports Relations Manager.
The new role involved creating a team of Athlete Ambassadors and working alongside them as spokespersons for the charity.

I recruited and managed the involvement of a team of 70 international athletes and several sporting organisations, including Chelsea FC, Harlequins Rugby and Sir Mo Farah, Chemmy Alcott, Tim Brabants, Andy Murray, Sebastien Foucan, Ugo Monye, Sir Alastair Cook, Anne Keothavong, Jose Mourinho and Michael Essien.
 
- Managed the 6 year partnership with Chelsea FC. 
Multi faceted role, working with all stakeholders from CEO down.  
This involved:
Field trips - Organising every aspect of field trips to Ghana and Jordan. Including but not exclusively initial reconnaissance, travel logistics, security, media, games.
Academy role - several aspects to this role including working closely with the academy to develop young players and ensure they were involved in the charity, providing and assisting coach a RTP from the ME team to play in the Cobham Cup, staff involvement in the charity, fund raising on behalf of RTP.
First team role - shirt sponsorship in Champions league, use of RTP red football on pre-season tours, multiple media events and interviews with RTP sign off, 5 a side tournaments at Stamford Bridge, corporate events. 

- Negotiated the relationship with Harlequins Rugby for RTP to be the beneficiaries of the Big Match. 

- Created and managed the Exposure Project with Nikon.
This involved providing ten athletes with cameras for a year where they took photos behind the scenes of their lives, culminating in an exhibition, auction and online e-commerce project. 
Negotiated the arrangement with Nikon for 10 cameras and sponsorship of the project. 
Project managed the building of the website and e-commerce platform and all aspects of the event, including the exhibition and all aspects of sponsorship, media and rights.

Previous financial experience with Morgan Stanley and with start-ups as a founding partner of sarugby.com.

High Performance Coach
I have more than 20 years experience working internationally in Elite Sport, with High Performance teams in a number of roles across Athlete Identification and Development and at all levels of coaching from u7 to Senior International.  
Roles have included: Athlete, Performance Analyst, Academy and Pathway Coach, International coach, Administrator, Sports Relationship Manager, Welfare Director, Coach Mentor and Consultant.
At the same time I have combined this work with various business ventures, initially whilst playing professional sport and then after retirement. 

My High Performance work in the last 5 years has encompassed: 
-Assisting coaches and players create learning environments that challenge and empower players. 
-Aiding the improvement of coaching Skill Acquisition and decision makers. 
-Utilising analytics, match and performance data to shape training protocol and interventions, especially in team sports with the integration of analytics into a global approach of training Tactical, Technical, Mental and Physical simultaneously. 
-Coach mentoring.

Every day is a learning day. 
Servant Leadership 

I only spent a brief amount of time working with @josemourinho but I studied Jose and his work (me trying to work him out in the background of the first photo 🤣)

It was impactful on me as a human and a coach. 

The best don’t lead from a place of self interest and the biggest lesson I experienced first hand was on this trip to Ghana and had nothing to do with sport or coaching and for me is one of the reasons why he has been so successful. 

I was on the periphery, far from a major player. 
My hand was in a cast and working with the one hand was tricky at times. 
At a buffet lunch I waited for everyone else to serve themselves and then went up. 
At this stage all the important people had been sitting down a while eating around the corner out of sight. 

As I went to try and serve myself with only my left hand I felt the presence of someone behind me. 

I looked around and Jose had come over from the dining area and asked if he could serve me. 

No one else could see us, no one was aware. He hadn’t done this for effect or because it would be seen. 

I saw this again several times. 

He would consistently treat people equally whether they were the ambassador, owner or me. 
He would remember people’s names and would hold the door for you whether someone else was watching or whether the corridor was empty. 

Sadly, I’ve seen the opposite from some prominent and technically competent coaches across varying sports and corporate environments and without exception they have under achieved often whilst having the greatest resources available to them. 

Lesson. 
Genuinely care about the people around you and not for what they can do for you and then see what’s possible. 

I’d love to hear what my network think about this? 

Is this genuinely possible in all environments or is it even desirable? 

Or is it not practical, weak, utopian or insincere and inauthentic if a leader strives to lead like this?
