General Partner at Caban Global Reach Private Equity LP and Managing Director of Caban Group, investing in fintech and healthcare scale-ups across frontier markets.

Over 31 years, I have built and exited four operating businesses and worked across venture building, SaaS, fintech, and impact ventures in emerging and developed markets. That operator experience directly informs how I assess risk, structure investments, and support leadership teams through scale.

The biggest driver of returns isn’t narrative. It’s operational resilience.

The best-priced deals often come with the clearest risk asymmetry — not the loudest story.

In every cycle, the deals that ultimately outperform share a pattern:

In contrast, the most hyped opportunities tend to break at the same point:

Over the last year, I’ve noticed fintech businesses attracting the most serious capital are changing how they’re built.

It’s less about expanding fast.
More about redesigning how revenue, liquidity, and risk flow through the company.
↳ Payments platforms I’ve looked at are moving deeper into infrastructure.
↳ Lending models are tightening duration and loss exposure.
↳ Vertical fintechs are anchoring growth in repeatable transaction economics.

Not because demand has softened.
Because scale now rewards durability.

The businesses compounding value most consistently tend to share three traits:
↳ revenue tied directly to underlying activity,
↳ cash conversion that improves with volume,
↳ and regulatory positioning that lowers friction over time.

What’s happening isn’t a pullback.
It’s a maturation of the sector.
And historically, that’s where long-term returns are built.

Early growth is forgiving.
↳ Founders can compensate with energy.
↳ Decisions happen fast.
↳ Cash gaps are patched manually.

But scale changes the physics of a business.
↳ Decision volume increases.
↳ Dependencies multiply.
↳ Small inefficiencies compound into structural risk.

This is where many high-momentum companies quietly break.
Not in revenue. In execution.

What separates durable businesses from fragile ones isn’t ambition.
 It’s whether operating systems evolve ahead of complexity.

Strong governance, financial cadence, and leadership depth aren’t “overhead.”
They’re what allow growth to remain controlled instead of chaotic.

In private equity, the inflection point is rarely visible in the numbers first.
It shows up in how decisions slow, cash tightens, and accountability blurs.

Scale doesn’t reward speed alone.
 It rewards structure that can carry speed.

A few years ago the first questions were usually about opportunity.
How big is the market?
How strong is the deal flow?
How quickly can capital be put to work?

More recently the conversation tends to move somewhere else quite quickly.
Governance.
Not governance as a checklist or compliance requirement.
But governance as a way of understanding how decisions are actually made when conditions get tougher.

In sectors like fintech and healthcare — where regulation, capital intensity and trust all matter — that becomes important very quickly.

Investors aren’t just looking at the opportunity anymore.
They’re trying to understand the decision-making behind it.

How capital moves through the business.
How risk is managed.
And what happens when things don’t go according to plan.

The managers that seem to attract the most serious attention tend not to be the loudest.

They’re usually the ones where that structure is clear.

In the current cycle, governance is no longer a hygiene factor.
It’s underwriting criteria.

In our conversations with sophisticated LPs, the discussion moves quickly from opportunity size to decision architecture:
How are investment decisions documented?
How is downside modelled?
What happens when liquidity tightens?

Five years ago, speed and access were enough to open the door.
Today, capital is more selective about control, reporting cadence, and capital deployment discipline.

In fintech and healthcare particularly, the managers attracting conviction aren’t those with the most visible pipelines.

They’re the ones who can demonstrate how governance functions under stress.
Markets change.
Underwriting standards evolve with them.

Governance is no longer compliance.

It’s a competitive advantage.
