The beauty of flexible working is that you can work wherever and whenever you want. For example, I love to work on Sundays. Here's why:

I live in Italy, Tuscany. 

One thing is for sure: la famiglia is pretty important for Italians. Another thing is also kind of big here: food and restaurants.

This means almost all restaurants are fully booked on Sundays. Even in small towns. The families are flooding the places.

So getting a table without booking one a week in advance is impossible. Therefore, we usually skip it all together and stay at home.

The same goes for entertainment.
Cinema, theatre, malls, shops, and even the beaches are super crowded.

I love people, but I don't like crowds. 
So we do everything during the weekdays: eating & going out. While the weekends are busy for recreation, weekdays are busy with stuff.

News and updates and things are happening. Work gets done, people are in meetings, etc.

So, I tend to do deep work on Sundays. 
It's the best day for writing.

No interruptions. No meetings. No updates or news. No reason to go out.

If you can do it by a pool surrounded by cedar trees, that's a bonus! :)

When you are in a relationship, and both of you work remotely from home, things can get complicated differently. I practice what I preach both in business AND relationships: trust, freedom, and collaboration.

We both work from home in Tuscany. 
All of our clients are in the US/EU. 

We work smart, so we don't work the 8hrs every day. 
But still, we spend most of our time together in the same space.

For both of us, it is the first time this has happened.
In our previous relationships, we both went into the office. 
Which means we had 3-5hrs together. 
Now we have the full day. All week. All year.

This creates all sorts of different problems.

So, we implemented a couple of rules to preserve the joy of our time together.

All the rules are based on trust in each other, providing maximum freedom and relying heavily on communication. 

1. Travel alone. 

Sometimes, we travel separately. 
I still have things to take care of in my hometown, Budapest. 
She sometimes volunteers for projects. 

5-7 days, sometimes 2-3 weeks. 
Every 4-6 months.

During these times, we try to minimize contact with each other.
Call and chat only if necessary.

It gives us time to experience things on our own.
When we get back together, it's amazing.

2. Time alone.

We spend time alone a lot. 
We have our separate desks in separate rooms.
We go out sometimes without each other. 
We do different sports, activities, etc., without each other.

Or, sometimes, we tell each other that this is an alone day. 
We bump into each other in the kitchen, but not much else is happening together.

It gives us space to think and be alone.
We get back together with more energy and need to be together.

3. Say what you think and share everything.

I'm not sure how common this is with other couples, but based on how others relate to us when they see us talk to each other, I guess it is not that common.

We tend to be polite but also very honest with each other. 
We say what we think. No filters. Zero.
We also share everything. No pullbacks.
We rarely fight. Almost never.

This level of honesty saves an insane amount of time and energy. 
It gives full clarity on how we are standing with anything.

When you are together all the time, energy gets consumed fast by each other.
When you are together all the time, it's important to know what's up 0-24.

With that honesty comes respect as well. 
We never decide without each other. Anything is on the table and open. 

I think these practices work well for businesses as well.
Provide maximum freedom, autonomy, and transparency.
Win engagement, performance, and clarity. 

That's pretty much the recipe for loyalty and commitment.

I'm not sure who needs to hear this, but if you have anxiety about Monday's workday, you probably work at the wrong place. Change is hard but always optional and open. 

Pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone means you will live more. Sometimes, this translates to exact years as well. Change preserves you like nothing else.


I can see that on my dog. 

I got him out of a shelter 10 years ago. 
He was already 3-4 years old, at least then.

He is a mid-sized, male, mixed shepherd-hound-whatever-was-on-the-streets.

They've told me that he bit the guards and behaves like a maniac. He is a fluffy potato with me, the most well-behaved dog I have ever seen. 

Depending on vets, he is somewhere between 14-17 years old. He is mostly blind, almost completely deaf, and barely can walk. 

We ALWAYS bring him with us everywhere. Because we can't sit on our asses, he lived in around 20 different places in the last 10 years. Probably traveled around the world in miles. 

I wholeheartedly believe that he is still alive because of this constant change. 

We don't treat him as an old dog. He has to climb stairs and walk every day, and he is under military-style control and obedience. 

Even though he can barely hear the orders or see his "chief."  

I'm not sure how many months or even years he has. He lived more than he should have... 

We told him last week that we will move to another place soon. It took him 3-months to settle into his current place...

But hey, that's change. That's what life is all about, isn't it?

Work is not your family. Remember that whenever you make a decision that compromises your work-life balance. 


This is the priority order for a happy life:
- Yourself
- Your loved ones
- Your work

Sometimes, we mess up this order. 
Sometimes, we mess it up temporarily. "I'll do this just for now."
Sometimes, temporary processes become standards. 

The priority order is the same for everyone. 
Whether you work for someone or run a business, it doesn't matter. 

But if work is not your family, then what is it?

It's a community. Communities of people that are:

- gathered together by a shared vision
- united by a common mission
- motivated by sort-of-the-same values
- led by managers who foster collaboration

The deeper the shared value between members, the more active the community becomes. 

The less directive and more supportive the managers are, the more honest and motivated the community members will be. 

The more transparent the mission is, the easier it is to join and stay productive within the community.

Things are simple. 

Build your workplace as a community, not as a family. 
Don't expect commitment from people "just because." They owe you nothing.
Don't commit to your work "just because." You owe them nothing.

If you think your workplace is your family, you probably have yet to learn what the family is. If you operate your workplace as a family, you probably don't have a real family.

If you have "family" in your job ad, that is the biggest red flag ever.

Happy Monday - here is the best technique for a productive week: skip work for the first hour of your morning... You would be surprised how effective this simple trick is.


My secret tip for leaders who: 

- jump from one shiny object to another
- having one meeting after another
- make decisions on-demand within minutes

Your problem: focus. Retaining focus is especially hard if you work online. 

But if you are a leader or a founder of a startup/scaleup, OMG, focus is a luxury for you. 

But there is a simple trick: morning detox. 

Here's how it works:

- Hide your phone in the living room, never keep it in the bedroom
- When you wake up, do your chores without the phone
- Eat breakfast, have coffee, or whatever is your thing without your phone

Essentially, have an hour during the morning when you don't jump into work. 

That hour of interrupted wake-up keeps you focused during the day.
Or at least you will have a blast starting your day. 

From personal experience, I can tell that the hardest part is the breakfast without the phone. For me, it was a real deal.

Happy Monday, except for those leaders who hide how their company performs from their team! You have serious work to do to build trust at work.

You would be surprised how many leaders hide in the black.

- They are not sharing key metrics of the company
- They are keeping teams separated
- They are sharing limited info with their teams

Secrecy means control. But control has its cost. 

Teams with low transparency have less trust in their managers (and each other).

Which means:

- Higher churn, lower retention
- Lower performance and productivity
- More $ burned on hiring & lost of time with onboarding

Overall, companies with a higher trust level perform better. 

To build trust, you need to increase transparency internally. 
End the secrecy. 

The more transparent you are, the higher the trust is.
The higher the trust is, the better the engagement is.
The better the engagement is, the better productivity is. 
And so on and on...

But how do you do this? What are the first steps?

In the office, trust is naturally earned through proximity and time. 
In remote, you have to be intentional to build it. 
Without it, you won't have a great team. Here's how you build it:

1. Provide access to information

The more access you provide, the more transparency you have.
Which means more trust.

Review your ops and be honest: do you share enough info with your team? 
Or are you hiding in the dark?

2. Do monthly synched & async orientations

All hands on deck on a synched meeting.
Everyone gets a note from the leader every month, async.

Simple tricks. Big wins.

Some people spend a year at a remote team and never meet with their leader.
Or only when SHTF. 

Get ahead and share the monthly progress with everyone. 

These simple two tricks can mean miles of progress.

If I say meditation, people freak out that it's a woo-woo thing. If I say mindfulness, we are fine with it as it is an app on our smartwatch and a practice by any modern psychologist.

I care zero about how we name things. 
I care about the practice and the results. 

I've been doing meditation for years now. 
It's simple. You sit in silence for 15 minutes and breathe. 

The benefits are astonishing:

- reduced stress level
- improved creativity
- better decision-making
- a deeper connection with others and with yourself

All that is done simply by sitting and doing "nothing."

For leaders, I would prescribe it as a medication. 

It helps you to avoid the shiny object syndrome. Jumping onto one tool after another. Solving problems with resources is a common trap. 

It helps you avoid burnout. By reclaiming time to self-reflect, you boost your creativity and confidence, which in turn helps you be passionate about your work.

It helps you to make so much better decisions. By thinking things through, you have the time to analyze, reflect, and make proper, confident decisions. 

If you want to start, do it before bed. That's the easiest way.
You will also sleep better - that's a bonus!

It is mandatory for those who manage an entire business growing, evolving, and battling itself through progress. 

Hit a strategic pause of silence.

There are five simple tactics that you can use to reclaim time, regain focus, and be more mindful as a leader. 


More time = more focus = better performance.
As a leader, you need time to make good decisions. 
You can get that time by being more mindful. 

Mindfulness is a practice that you need to do every day. 
But starting the habit is hard.

Here are my five tactics. 
They worked for me. 
I'm sure they will work for you. 

1. Detox morning. 

The best times to be mindful are the mornings and the evenings. 
It's harder to step out from processes when the day has already started, and you are in the flow.

But mornings are sacred. Yet, what do most people do? 
They respond to chats & emails after they wake up. 

Detoxify your morning by hiding your phone. 
Do chores without it.
Eat breakfast without it.
Stay silent for 10-15mins without it.

It will change the way you start your day.

2. The clarity walk.

In the middle of the day, take a short walk. 
You've probably guessed the trick: leave your phone at home. 

Don't stare at the screen.
Stare on trees, landscapes, people, etc.

No, listening to podcasts and music and attending meetings are not good ways to gain clarity. Filling up your head with even more information is contraproductive to mindfulness.

Walk. No phone.

Focus is everything when you need to get things done. For leaders, it is a make-or-break practice. Most of us spread ourselves thin by multitasking. Here's how you can avoid it:

Hit a pause. A strategic pause.

Focus is all about time allocation. 
Gaining time to reflect, evaluate, and think will improve your focus.

But since we are leading teams, time is our enemy. 

I practice 5 different things almost every day to juggle between multiple things.

1. Morning detox

The first hour of the day is super important. 
It sets you up for the day. 

Most of us wake up with our phones.
We check it immediately. Even react to things within minutes. 

That's the worst thing you can do. 
Ignore your phone, put it aside, and follow your morning without it. 

You will launch your day with better awareness.

2. Clarity walk

During the day, we tend to mess up our focus. It's OK. 
Take a walk. Have a tea. Eat your lunch. 

It doesn't matter. Do some activity for 30-60 minutes. 
But WITHOUT your phone. 

No walking meetings. No walking and staring at a screen. 
No eating lunch at your desk. No making tea while replying to emails.

Just do some short activities without stimulating your brain.

3. Kill multitasking with one prime task a day

We are leaders, so we have to deal with 1000 different things.
It's normal, and multitasking is sadly part of our lives.

One thing you can do is nominate a prime task every day. 

One thing that you want to accomplish or focus on during that day.
Pull in at least one uninterrupted hour into that task. 

No chat, no meetings, no emails, no calls, nothing. 
Just a single focus on one task. 

You would be surprised how far you can go with this trick.

4. Reduce instant reactions

We react to 1000 different needs every day. 
To be honest, only a handful of these require instant reactions. 
You navigate yourself into the habit of reacting to anything ASAP. 
It's a lie in your brain. 

The world won't stop if you say this: "I'll think about it and get back to you."

Get back your time. 
It also shows that you are truly thinking about it.

5. Sit and breathe for 30 minutes with your eyes closed

Meditate, be mindful, pray, or do whatever you fancy. 

Every approach has the same practice.
You sit alone in a room.
You close your eyes.
You focus on your breathing.
You do this for at least 30 minutes. 

It gives you time to reflect, evaluate, and be with yourself. 
Do it before bedtime, and you will also sleep much better.

Beating impostor syndrome

Old school gets a bad rep. In most cases, it's OK. We are changing, so our habits should change as well. But some old-school practices mean they have been here for a long time just because they work. 

Take an internal monthly DM from the CEO to their internal staff. 
It is here because it works if it is done right. 

It puts people in perspective fast.
It reinforces current goals and the mission.
It shares the progress of the month & the outlook of the next.
It profiles the CEO as the leader of the company.
It is simple, efficient, and somewhat easy to do. 
It has the potential to grow further. 

It's such a simple old technique. 
I'm surprised how rare it is to see it at remote companies. 

An internal CEO note is one of the 5 actions you can do to increase trust within your team and provide more transparency.

The anatomy of a good decision = time + information + reflection. Contrary to popular belief, almost all decisions can WAIT. 


If you are leading a startup/scaleup, things are all over the place. You are in a constant fighting scene, battling through the day.

Regaining focus is key.

It gives you back time. 
Time that you can use to gather more information.
Time that you can use to reflect on situations.
Time that you can use to make better decisions.

Don't jump to conclusions quickly. 
All things can wait at least 12/24hrs.

Did you know only 1-2% of users here create content? Yet, with almost any type of content, you can get in front of thousands of people whom you can network with. So what is your reason for not starting?

With a higher trust level at your workplace, you can bag 5 easy wins. It is a simple no-brainer why trust is crucial. 

1. Higher churn and lower retention level.

We are loyal to things that we know.
People leave companies that they don't know or experience mistrust.

2. Better alignment and clarity.

We trust things that we know.
People get more clarity if there's more information on how they work.

3. Better productivity and performance.

We commit ourselves to things we know.
People perform better if they know what they are working on/for.

4. Better engagement.

We are active with things we know.
People get disengaged if they experience a lack of trust.

5. Better efficiency and speed.

We complete tasks faster if there's readily available information on the HOW.
People are more efficient if there's transparency on how they work. 

Studies show that people perform better if they have a workplace with trust.

Trust starts with transparency. 

Increase transparency = boost trust.

As a leader, you control what information you share with your team.

Give up as much control as you can to give access to as much info as you can.

I hate airports beyond any imagination. If I can, I travel by car or train to avoid airports. I've been working remotely for the past decade, plus, I travel a lot. I've lost count of how many airports I've been to, but... hey, no one tops Schiphol, right? :D

My baseline for a good airport is simple. Almost any train station can do that...

1. Make it organized and seamless.

I don't f'in' care about your plaza, mall, in-door ski ramp, or cultivated jungle to showcase how much cash your country can burn. 

I care about one thing: get in and get out fast. 

If it takes more than 30 mins from security to the gates or from gates to the taxi, it means you forgot the no1 rule of an airport: it's a transportation hub, not a freakin' showroom.

2. Serve good grab-and-go food.

Even Schiphol fails in that. It is one of the most efficient airports ever, but the food is horrible. Well, it's Dutch cuisine, right? (Het spijt me!)

Italians at least have this priority on top, so I love most Italian airports.

And no, we don't need full-blown restaurants. We don't want to get drunk at an airport; that's gross. We just need edible, easy-to-carry food.

3. Have a proper lounge.

I always pay for the executive lounge. It's inexpensive, has a buffet mostly, is comfortable, has good WiFi and tables, etc. Fewer people.

But it's insane how many airports mess this up. That's where you can really see the differences between airport and airport.

3+1. It's a transportation hub. 

I can't state this highly enough. Countries sometimes design freakin' showrooms than proper hubs. 

No 0-24 fixed perm way of travel - only bus is available.
No call-by-app taxi, only hyenas. 

By the way, have you noticed that the shadier, wasteful, and oppressed a country is, the shinier its airports are? Only those who have ski ramps and jungles in their airports really want to hide something. Change my mind!

To me, if I have to fly, I prefer the small city airports. 
No crowds. Easier to get around. I can ignore their bad amenities. 

Treviso Canova 100x over Venizia Marco Polo.
Pisa Galileo 100x over Firenze Vespucci.

I'm now at the airport in Budapest, flying back to Pisa. Tip: avoid the lounge here, it's bad beyond anything, but the one in Pisa is great!
