I feel the biggest #digitaltransformation has been in #land and #revenue in India.

I was recently involved in a long standing dispute (50 years or so old) for a piece of very precious agriculture land. The land was sold and bought multiple times, ultimately landing in a #legal dispute.

Once the ordered was passed and execution began, I witnessed something that surprised me. The digitalisation of land records, the entire process of registering a sale deed and subsequent transfer of ownership. All the money was sent via bank accounts to bank accounts. No cash, no cheque.

Till about 15 years ago, this process would have a delight for the middlemen, the patwari, the tehsildar, the revenue inspector, notary and every else in between and on the sides. Bribery and corruption would have filled their homes. 

But now, nothing. The sadness on tehsildar's face was visible as he did try to make some money under some frugal issues, but the buyers were quite well informed and kept backing up with #laws.

The system efficient enough to digitally stamp all documents and records, captured #biometrics of relevant parties and it was all done in a few days time. No hassles. 

This really amazed me as I remembered visiting office after office in heat with my father as a child to get land -related work done. This was the most efficient dealing with the Indian government.

If someone asks me where has been the biggest transformation wrt to technology, it is not #AI or #healthcare, but land and records. 

P.S - In Switzerland, the system would have been honest, but this entire process would have taken 2-3 months depending on the canton (St.Gallen, definitely 3 months or so).

Truly digital India.

Apart from the memes of Galgotias university at #AI summit, there were more shocking realisations. 

Trustworthy AI session had panellists from Australian High Commission and UNESCO and not real experts who worked in this field. The person hosting the session should have been a speaker as he has worked in Trustworthy AI. 

The biggest irony for me was side by side sessions on Responsible and Ethical AI and on GenAI led by #openAI and #anthropic . classic oxymoron. 

The summit also celebrated speakers from companies that are marred with #copyright, #privacy and #humanrights violations. 

And of course, there were security and operational issues that really made many startups feel like second class citizens.

if only the rich boys club was to be celebrated and showcased, this summit could’ve been hosted at PM’s or a senior bureaucrat’s residence and everyone could’ve rubbed each other’s back. 

I am rooting for these underdog startups that will really make India shine!

#lawyers and #privacy enthusiasts must watch the session on #AI and #privacy at AI summit. 

Another example of masquerading experts. 

One claimed DPDPA is not enforced yet. Another one stated that privacy violations are contract based. 😳💣

Another one stated that scraping data from public domain is #copyright and #privacy violation. Partly correct. 

I think I’ve had enough of “expert” panels and hope real experts are invited next time and not friends of friends.

#NGT started with colour and brought in a green legal revolution - the initial years, it had enormous power which it exercised freely and often, albeit unapologetically. Now, it is becoming colourless and dying. Look at the Nicobar Project case.

I have seen NGT benches since then rendering "profuse apology" in one of the cases of the organization I volunteer with because a certain Supreme Court judge had written to the judicial member for undue intervention. Interestingly, the matter was already transferred to the NGT by another SC bench, but the said judge was unaware (and why, bothered?). 

The asymmetrical approach of the NGT is worrying. As pointed out, clearances often do no follow due procedures, esp Forest Clearances and Environmental Clearances. What is the point of preservation of forests if it has to be cut for any trivial project?

Another interesting point that I have often challenged, while challenging the grant of a FC, is the grant of the clearance for ten years and subsequent non-renewal. Investment worth lakhs of crores to build a hydel power plant or a ropeway or any other work just for 10 years? What happens to that project after 10 years? More often then not, the project proponent files for a stay against non renewal in the 8th or 9th year and then it runs till eternity 😉

This is definitely not leading to any kind of development, let alone sustainable one.

A landmark 2021 judgment by the Supreme Court described the National Green Tribunal (NGT) as a “specialized” protector of environmental justice, tasked with safeguarding public interest against ecological degradation. But an investigation by The Indian Express of over 1 lakh NGT orders since 2020 points to a growing asymmetry in how the Tribunal has ruled on environmental and forest clearances.

Between 2020 and 2025, in appeals related to Environment Clearance (EC) and Forest Clearance (FC), the NGT ruled in favour of project developers in four out of five cases — either by upholding a contested clearance or staying its denial. Of the 329 appeals filed by citizens and activists against clearances granted by the government, only 20% (65 cases) succeeded. In contrast, when project proponents challenged the rejection or cancellation of clearances, they secured relief in nearly 80% (126 of 159 cases).

Data from 2016–2019 shows a more balanced trend, but the pro-project tilt has sharpened in the past two years. Between 2024 and 2025, only 7% of appeals challenging clearances were successful, while 88% of industry-led appeals against rejections got relief. A significant number of citizen appeals were dismissed as “time-barred” for missing the 90-day deadline, or rejected as “not tenable”.

green watchdog NGT rules

California's Civil Rights Council regulations on #AIhiring are in effect. I am surprised that I did not see many talk about it or even ask about it, especially when so many #AI and #hiring companies are active or based in California.

Anyhow, these regulations mandate #AIgovernance and explainability. The lengthy contracts are no longer a defense shield. It is explainability and documentation with evidence.
