#Personalfinance unlocks bright futures! 💸💡

 State Superintendent Tony Thurmond and CDE hosted a press conference and summit on Tuesday to promote personal finance education for K–12 students across California, especially as a source of economic empowerment for marginalized communities. Panelists included Tim Ranzetta of Next Gen Personal Finance and Val Chapman, as well as William (Bill) Borzage and Stanford University Professor Annamaria Lusardi. Thurmond voiced his support for legislation to require financial education in all California public schools. Educators and experts interested in joining Thurmond’s Personal Finance Task Force are invited to email Communications@cde.ca.gov.

The CTE Research Network released a report that provides a systematic review of the research literature spanning the past 20 years. Harbor Freight Tools For Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence

This is why I do what I do!
Friday night I had the privilege to meet Marque Trosper and his son Dax, as they came out to the game to celebrate Dax’s 11th birthday! I was able to get their entire family on the bench during warmups, and Dax even got a signed puck from one of the players! 

What made this encounter truly special was hearing the story of Q’s journey, and how he miraculously received a kidney transplant earlier this year!! While waiting on the transplant list, hockey was the one thing that Q and Dax were able to bond over, and allowed them to have a stronger bond. Hearing this reminded me so much of the relationship between me and my dad, as sports has always been our “love language.”

As someone who’s father has battled Kidney Failure and has been on dialysis for the last 3 years, I know first hand how physically, and emotionally draining dialysis can be both for the patient, but also their support system. 
It truly was an honor to meet this family, and help them create memories that they will not soon forget after all they have been through in the past year! 

Above all, I am incredibly thankful for a job that allows me to truly make a difference in the lives of many different people!

You might be able to tell that this photo was created with AI, but the important part is the story. 

Yesterday a student, new to my class, asked me to help him with his taxes after school. It turned into one of the highlights of my year. 

“Wow I didn’t know I made that much money. I could have bought a car.”

He then pulled out his notebook and fires questions:

“Are you going to teach us about investing?

Have you heard of the S&P500?

Do you know that the interest rates on some savings accounts are around 5% right now?

Will you teach us how to shop around for car insurance?

What other life hacks will you be sharing?”

I learned that my student has been bringing his notebook to work and telling his manager everything he is learning in class. His manager is a bit of a financial guru and has been sharing much of the same advice and pushing him even further. 

Then he tops it all off with “I bet some people would pay lots of money for this class. I am so happy I am learning this now. Thank you.” 

He walked away with his federal and state taxes complete, a book on millionaires, and an extra copy of a savings goals worksheet for his manager. I left with a big smile on my face. Not bad for a Monday.

The DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) just finalized new personal finance standards that will significantly expand access to all DC high school students to this critical information. The standards are based off the National Standards for Personal Finance Education, developed by CEE and Jump$tart in 2021.
