Starkes Signal für den Klimaschutz: Grünes Licht für die Satellitenmission GRACE-C 🚀 

Zwei Satelliten, die hintereinander herfliegen und die Erde umkreisen – so funktioniert eines der wichtigsten Klimaforschungsprojekte im Weltall. Seit zwei Jahrzehnten dokumentieren die deutsch-amerikanischen GRACE-Zwillingssatelliten Veränderungen auf der Erde, indem sie sich das Gravitationsfeld anschauen, Wassermassen bewerten und Veränderungen der Meeresoberfläche, der Eismassen oder des Grundwasservorkommens erkennen. Die GRACE-Mission liefert uns dabei zahlreiche neue Erkenntnisse und wichtige Daten für wissenschaftliche Studien und Klimaberichte. 

Diesen Erfolg werden wir mit der neuen deutsch-amerikanischen Kooperation GRACE-C nun fortsetzen. Mit GRACE-C arbeiten wir gemeinsam mit den USA daran, den Klimawandel und dessen Folgen für die Erde besser zu verstehen und wichtige Entscheidungen im Kampf gegen den Klimawandel zu treffen. Es war uns im Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz und Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung deshalb ein zentrales Anliegen, die erfolgreiche Kooperation mit der US-Raumfahrtbehörde NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration mit der neuen Satellitenmission GRACE-C fortzusetzen. 

Die Umsetzung der Klimamission ist ein weiteres wichtiges Schlüsselprojekt unserer neuen deutschen #Raumfahrtstrategie und ist gleichzeitig entscheidend für unsere internationale Zusammenarbeit in der Raumfahrt. Deshalb freue ich mich sehr, dass es dafür nun grünes Licht gibt.

If the economy starts looking up in the next couple of years, you’ve got women to thank. A

t least, that’s according to a new report from Ned Davis Research (NDR). From job participation and employment, through to the stock market and GDP, a new study titled The Rising Influence of Millennial Women found that women currently in their late twenties and early thirties are emerging as the silver bullet to many of the economy’s woes.

The global investment research company did a deep dive into women’s participation in the labor market and found the prime-age female job participation rate hit record highs in a handful of developed economies in 2023.

“Americans are moving away from the office,” Nick Bloom, the Stanford University economics professor and longtime expert on remote work, posted on X. “So firms now are hiring in a much bigger area, [which] is why RTOs are now so hard. Folks don’t live near the office anymore.” 

Despite return-to-office mandates and a move toward more hybrid and in-person work, employees are moving farther away from the office. That may not make sense until you look at the price of housing in city centers where most office buildings are located. Indeed, home prices in more than 85% of U.S. cities in the last quarter of 2023, according to the National Association of REALTORS®.

As a result, more workers have moved to the suburbs and are forced to make longer commutes. The average distance from work for employees who were hired in 2023 is now 35 miles, up from 10 miles in 2019, according to a Stanford University and Gusto study published earlier this month. Stanford surveyed nearly 6,000 firms for the survey.

What’s more, as Bloom noticed, is that “as folks move further away and come into the office less, vacancy rates keep rising,”

Um aber die Akzeptanz und Nutzung von KI hierzulande zu fördern, muss die Technologie für die Menschen erlebbar und nachvollziehbar sein. Ein gesellschaftliches Vertrauen in digitale Anwendungen wird nicht durch abstrakte Ideen und düstere digitale Dystopien geschaffen, sondern durch nachvollziehbare und positive Praxisbeispiele. 

Letzte Woche war ich beim Launch des deutschen Unternehmens CertifAI und habe dort über die ungenutzten Potenziale von #KI und Daten gesprochen. Das junge Unternehmen hat sich darauf spezialisiert, KI-Anwendungen zu prüfen und zu zertifizieren, womit es ein Vorreiter auf dem Terrain ist, denn bisher gibt es kaum Ansätze für standardisierte Verfahren. 

Vielen Dank für den interessanten Austausch! Ich bin sehr gespannt, welche weiteren Dienstleistungen, Produkte und Anwendungsfälle sich in den nächsten Jahren durch Künstliche Intelligenz noch ergeben werden.

We are asking machines to perform increasingly complex, dynamic tasks, encompassing a broad range of applications from assistive prosthetics to autonomous navigation in robots.

Led by Prof. Steve Collins, researchers at Stanford have invented a way to augment electric motors to make them much more efficient at performing dynamic movements through a new type of actuator, a device that uses energy to make things move. Their actuator uses springs and clutches to accomplish a variety of tasks with a fraction of the energy usage of a typical electric motor.

“Rather than wasting lots of electricity to just sit there humming away and generating heat, our actuator uses these clutches to achieve the very high levels of efficiency that we see from electric motors in continuous processes, without giving up on controllability and other features that make electric motors attractive,” explains Collins.

A replacement for traditional motors could enhance next-gen robots

Wealthy people may be happier, but this study finds that money can’t buy a sense of purpose.

“Research has shown when people get wealthier, they experience greater happiness,” explains Professor Jennifer Aaker. But according to her and fellow researchers, income doesn’t just change our level of happiness, it changes how we view happiness altogether.

Aaker and her coauthors find that meaning is a stronger predictor of happiness for people with low incomes than those with greater financial resources. In other words, people with more money may be happier, but people with less money view happiness as tied to a sense of meaning — the belief that their life has purpose, value, and direction. And, remarkably, that connection is consistent across much of the world.

“The results were almost universally consistent across the United States and much of the world,” Aaker says. “Among low-income people, having a sense of meaning in one’s life is more closely associated with overall happiness.”

It’s unclear whether meaning causes happiness or vice versa, but Aaker posits it’s a mix of both. Whatever someone’s income, she says, “People who succeed in finding meaning experience both meaning and happiness, but those who can’t find meaning aren’t happy.”
